I recently watched a short mini-doc from The Guardian (supposedly a left-wing outlet) on Pyongyang, and it was one of the most condescending, conspiratorial and downright elitist takes on the DPRK and the Korean people I think I've ever seen.

An important reason is the two tour guides can speak fluent Mandarin Chinese. They are really good in that.

    • @aryaman4250

Tourist guides are govt employees and are taught what to tell and what to not.
Its great that you like NK's culture, and you hate westerners demonizing it. BUT freedom is a different thing. More freedom or less freedom isn't a part of their culture, and isn't political either. It is a moral thing that citizens of every country deserve.
Most westerners and non-westerners who hate DPRK, don't hate Korean people and culture, thats why we still love South Korea. You don't need to compare this video with those videos about freedom, this is a basic travel video, and others are about govt and their actions related to freedom. Saying, this video is better than those is meaningless, because both talk about different things.

Others have commented already, but I also want to say how great this video is. It is objective, fair, and simply asks questions of the guide, and allows her to answer them. So many other videos are made with a political agenda, for a false dramatic effect. All nations have good and bad points. There is no need to be in a state of animosity with the DPRK. One does not have to agree with their society, but one should also not demonize them. We see here that people are living and working and shopping like people everywhere. It is much better to ask, learn, and try to be friendly.

I believe that such a casual conversation can occur between the Chinese tourists and the North Korean guides because there is a different perception of the Chinese there. The approach and the attitude towards Western tourists would be very different. Very importantly, the guides would be under different instructions in case they were accompanying Western visitors. Also, Westerners ("Westerners" is actually a wide category: ranging from North Americans to Western Europeans, from Australians to people from South-Eastern Europe) usually would not have the cultural competence that people from neighboring would naturally possess.

I don't understand why people like to go from one extreme to another. Of course, the real NK is not as terrible as what the West usually portrays but neither the appearance of the capital can represent the whole country. One of the reasons for Western bias also rests on the restriction put on foreign travellers. I don't even know if it is possible for Westerners to have small group travel in Pyongyang. If you can't provide outsiders with free and authentic experience than they could only rely on their imagination to fill the blanks, which would be inevitably subject to human bias.

I partly agree with this, but in a lot of the other NK videos I've seen often the questions westerners directed at NK guides are very pointed, patronizing and/or dripping with bias (ditto the commentaries). I'm really enjoying this series for the simple fact that the main guy is actually hitting the guides with a TON of questions that try to peel back the veil on ordinary people's lives there, but he does it in an inquisitive, non-judgmental way. The guide often got thrown from her script. I don't think this group necessarily is buying into everything they are told, but they just go along with it anyway and don't try to challenge (which I've def seen some western tourists do, often in a sarcastic/arrogant way - ya that'll really get your guide to want to have a real convo with you).
