Grizzly vs Black Bear

  • So today I had the most amazing wildlife encounter. I was driving a bus full of people on the David Thompson highway in Alberta, Canada and got stopped for an hour due to a motorcycle accident that happened when a biker stopped to see a bear on the side of the road and was hit by another biker. (a lot of road rash and maybe some broken bones but they survived). Turns out the little black bear was in the tree because a huge grizzly bear was at the bottom of the tree trying to get him (or her?). We watched the poor little black bear hang on for dear life and make a number of attempts to get away. I had to leave before the end of this encounter and I can only hope the black bear made out okay although his chances did not look good.
    Update: August 29, 2012.
    I've had some feedback from Parks Canada staff and others (see comments below)
    It seems most likely that the black bear was never in any serious danger at all. The grizzly bear probably had a carcass (deer or elk) in the bushes and the black bear kept trying to get a piece for itself. Of course, the grizzly bear was having none of it as you can see in the video. So, it turns out the grizzly was just keeping the black bear away from its food.and not stalking the black bear at all.

      That's actually why black bears are skittish and (usually) run from people. It's ancient instinct caused by their ancestors being devoured by grizzlies for countless generations.
      They're not scared of humans as such. They're scared of things standing upright that their instincts tell them could be a grizzly bear.
      So, we owe something to the grizzlies. The black bears would probably be very aggressive and predatory if it weren't that our upright shape "hacks" their instincts. Most of the time, anyway.

    • @Nature_is_metal
      @Nature_is_metal หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@Armored_MuskratBS take. Any animal in the world is wary of humans. Grizzlies and black bears both also interacted with human ancestors who hunted them as well. They will flee and not engage most of the time because they know by instinct that we're different. Even Lions and Tigers and even Leopards who have been known to be the primary hunter of every human species and primates are scared of humans.

    @Dockinabox 10 ปีที่แล้ว +568

    The grizzly was definitely feeding on something down there, but it was dark and small, and I can't help but think that it was a black bear cub. If the one in the tree was it's mother, it would explain her persistence. Out of instinct, she would've been trying to draw the grizz away from her cub, but not get herself killed either. That's the only thing that makes sense to me. That looked like a fresh kill too, because the grizz was still rubbing itself on it, which is what they do to mark a fresh kill with their scent. It's their way of saying, "Property of This Grizzly. Leave it alone!"
    Any black bear, unless it is stone cold starving and desperate, is not going to try and bug a grizzly at its kill. Grizzlies commonly predate on black bears, and black bears therefore AVOID grizzlies whenever possible. Maternal instinct is very strong in bear however, and mother sows will risk their lives for their cubs.

Trust me they do exist !! Seen a few and a lot of evidence since six yrs old to of late ! Other entities too ! Things you wouldn’t believe that can jump dimensions ! Portals too ! I never would believe that nonsense ! But it’s true ! It changed everything I knew to not being content anymore ! There’s a increase like you wouldn’t believe in recent years in almost every state ! I worked with Fish & Game and conversed with many out there too and initially you were told to say it’s a bear ! The newer regimen is different, That’s predicated on the region , Federal Forest service head honcho in the Sierra Nevadas in California my home and lineage since the 1860’s in cattle ranching , The guy Ron Casser came out admitting their out there and so many go missing and are not found ! All the normal stuff is ruled out , Apex predators bury their kills and nothing is found in situations it shouldn’t happen and SO MANY MOST DO NOT HAVE A CLUE ON THE NUMBERS ! Missing 411 by David Paulette’s a ex lawman and much more has documented so much and is on daily and has videos to books and is a solid guy who met up with a retired secret service guy who from guilt opened up ! It is mind boggling how many ! I know I’am over elaborating this fact ! Need too ! Money was why they said nothing or kept a data base of this for us to review , The parks generate billions and it is county up to federal and state ,Fees for entrance to boats and camping a hundred plus a night in many parks and tourist shops and so much more !!! That is a fact. The grizzlies straight & duller claws impede climbing, but at times they are able.
      The lady who was killed by a grizzly in Canmore a few years ago, they found grizzly hair 52' up in the tree.
      In all fairness, the report did not say if the bear killed her, or if she fell out of the tree, or the bear caused her to fall. The fact remains, that bear went quite ways up the tree.

I think it kept coming down, because another comment pointed out the grizzly appeared to be feeding on something, as it was rolling around on it (which they do onto kills) and also kept going back to the same spot. Perhaps it was eating the black bear's cub (which results in a sad ending either way 😔) or was digging through the black bears den which would explain why the black bear kept coming down, to instinctively, yet hopelessly try to draw the grizzly away from whatever it was eating. Bears also don't like to expend energy unnecessarily, so the grizzly would have given up when it realized it can't get to the black bear.
