I did almost the same thing. My parents kept finding the neighbors tiny puppy in their yard and after taking him back several times and him running the streets I scooped him up, took him home and gave him 16 years of love.

My mother in law got her cat that way. The cat kept coming to her house and chilling. My in law found out and told the neighbors that their kitty was always around her place. They didn’t seem to care. But wouldn’t give her the cat. Until the day the neighbors were moving. My in law ran over to the house and asked if they were taking the cat. They said no. They were just going to leave her. My mother in law, calmly said “Thank you” and picked up the cat as it was standing next to her and she left. She had Shorty for 15 years. Lucky cat and super mom in law.

Those people weren’t his parents. They wouldn’t even keep the collar on Doakes to keep him from getting picked up by animal control. It almost seems like they wanted him to get picked up. Doakes is with his parents now!

Terrible the way the prior owners treated this dog and even sadder that the shelter clearly didn't bother to look and just said no, WTF?? You saved this dog's life in more ways than one. Bless you for caring enough!
Right? They could have been like “honestly we have too many dogs, you’re gonna have to come look” rather then just telling him “no we don’t have him here”
Note to the fiancee: MARRY THIS MAN NOW. He's a keeper. Listens to his gut & his heart, even when others are telling him to ignore the fate of this innocent animal in need of someone to care and help. The man did the right thing, and it meant EVERYTHING to Doakes. Pay attention, folks--is what a moral compass looks like. God bless them. So happy for this family. 💜💜

@@nowirehangers2815 I totally disagree. People with a big heart for animals typically treat other human beings well too. They have a better developed sense of empathy & compassion. The capacity to love is not finite nor should one loving relationship supplant the other. Mature, well adjusted adults who aren't neurotic, narcissistic or childish should not find it difficult to love both their human partner and their pets. Much the same way a parent loves a spouse and their children at the same time. The relationships are different in nature but no less bonded and they don't compete with each other They'reconcurrent. I personally would have no use for any man who could not love an animal. I want nothing to do with men like that.

Thank you so much for not giving up on him, it's so easy to say "it's not your dog" and leave him to his horrible fate. That poor dog only had you, and you fought for him. Please, people, this is a beautiful story, learn from it. This man has a heart of gold!!!!! I wish there were millions like him...we wouldn't have a problem with homeless/abused/neglected fur babies! His boys are absolutely beautiful....I hope they are living life to the fullest. And HE MOVED for his animals...what a human being!!!
You know it is possible to NOT have a tons of homeless dog. Without having people like him. Just have regulations and laws in order in the country , and make sure it's not worth breaking em !
We barely have any in my country. Each time i look up dogs for adoption there is less then 50 total every single times , most of the time under 25. We have two rescue organations, with each having several regions of the country covered and there own personal website. And you can see all result of dogs (or other type of animals) for adoption on all websites combined at same time in one location aswell. So easy to check :)
Sure there is more around on other websites. But most of those are dogs you can take in from other contries, they are not actualy in the country yet. But will travel once you buy the dog. Or they are sold by breeder or personal homes needing to get rid of there dog for one reason or another.
The usual reason is "allergi" haha i honestly dont beleave it , used way to much . They proberly just grew tired of the "work" a pet requires to maintain. But thats just my personal oppinion clearly :P

You know what? I wish people would spay and neuter their pets that would cut down immensely on unwanted animals. People who do not should be heavily fined and imprisoned. If you want a pet make sure you can afford to keep them, good food, good shelter and medical should be your first concern.

When he saved poor Doakes, who had to be so confused what was happening to him, at the shelter I definitely teared up. To go above and beyond like that for his doggies friend is just so heartwarming. Heart of Gold!

Pits are very Empathic. They are the biggest babies on the planet. Like all Empaths they feel YOUR emotions and everyone around them. Anger in the hood, dog mad, love in the hood, dog the biggest baby ever.
You rescued the two you were meant to. Doesn't seem like enough.
But to those two...it's the WHOLE WORLD

I've lived in a house connected to a privately owned, no-kill, dog rescue as the full-time caretaker for the past six years. I've cared for hundreds, if now thousands of dogs, and hundreds of dog breeds. The meanest breed I've come across: Chihuahua. The gentlest, most loving breed: Pit Bull. The media only reports attacks from Pit Bulls, regardless of the fact that there are five (5!) dog breeds clumped into the Pit Bull category. And regardless of the fact that statistically, you are more likely to get attacked by a German Shepherd, a Chihuahua, or even a Cocker Spaniel. Thank whatever higher power you believe in for people like this guy and his fiancée. Without people like them, the little hope for redemption that humanity has left would be completely lost.
So true....I can't believe that pit bull breeds still have such a stigma and some countries even ban them. My hope is that with social media more and more people will learn what cuddle bugs they actually are.

"I kept him from the neighbors...Then I put my house up for sale." Now that is devotion.
But, legally, you were in the clear. That's why there's a stray hold where the owners have a period where they can claim a lost dog. If they don't, then their ownership is severed and the dog can be legally adopted by a new family. Though I can understand why you wouldn't want to get into a whole big thing with your former neighbors.
Legally, he may have been in the clear, but that would have caused resentment between he and his neighbors. He made the right (and selfless) decision.

Maybe an option would be to dye the new dog to disguise him ... I'm not serious : ). Jolly well done going to all that trouble to provide a home for your furry family.

Good man. I've had 4 dogs all from the SPCA shelter. I remember the smartest dog I've ever known . I walked in and the dogs were all excited and barking. There was one dog who was sitting quiet when I walked up to him and sitting still. His eyes were pleading me to get him out. He knew nobody wanted a barking dog. It was surreal. My father was a WWII Navy aviator and a tough man. I never saw him cry until our dog died. The dog had seizures and my dad spent thousands at the best vets. Unconditional love is a powerful thing.

Going to assume the neighbor was crazy, and you don't want to know what crazy people do even if they seemed to not care.
It's like when a child doesn't play with his toys but when someone else does they suddenly gain interest and jealous.
This nice young man certainly went that extra mile to help an animal in need. We need more people like him and less like those ex-neighbors.

If he did while struggling financially or otherwise than it's reckless even stupid not brave or heroic. Hero is too much of a big word to be used so casually. Suddenly everyone is a hero just because you did something other people do as well.
The look of pure joy from that stance of regconizing his best friend was the most heartwarming thing I ever seen. I love these dogs.
