From WC USA, I was there 1961-64, serving on a German Radar Site from February 1962 to July 1964! I couldn’t have served with a Beter bunch of Comrades! I was able to go home with 2 of them(2trips) and I couldn’t have been treated better by anyone! Their parents treated me just like any German Comrade they would have brought home for the weekend and these people forgave my terrible German! I would go back there and serve with these German Military any time! At times I feel I should have stayed in Bavaria asI married a German girl and her family treated me like one of them and even came to the USA many times to visit us!
I'm younger (25) but 13 years ago I went on a school trip in Germany. Despite the common history between our countries, my stay was great and the parents were very nice with me.

It's important to note that the purpose of the Bundeswehr changed in 1990 from territorial defense to international "peace keeping", which required significantly equipment and general structure. It is only now slowly changing back to becoming a standing army to protect the territorial integrity of NATO in Europe. It's not just become a "husk" because of budget cuts. It also just had to be used for different purposes.

The idea is to have troops to hold the NATO front in Europe till the bulk of combat power concentrated in the tank and armored grenadier formations can arrive and assemble.

It allways was a conscript army its just deactivated rn it can be reactivted any time
Its a division again. The "Division Schnelle Kräfte" concentrates paratroopers and light infantry elements. The Marder and Puma used by the armored grenadiers are also air-portable with 4 A400s required to carry 3 vehicles plus add-on armour. Though they are generally moved by rail and then drive to their assembly area. The idea is to have troops to hold the NATO front in Europe till the bulk of combat power concentrated in the tank and armored grenadier formations can arrive and assemble.
