- “Today I’ve made a choice to share with all of you an emotional event that happened to me 3 years ago. Sometimes my dearest friends and family will ask me why I would want to expose such a personal story to the public, and normally I wouldn’t. However, I would also be a hypocrite if what I preach all the time is how people should expose their SCARS, emotionally or physically, and wear them loudly and proudly on their sleeves to remind us of what we survived. Rather than carry that weight internally and sink into dark places, always wondering what we did wrong, what we could’ve done better, and never forgiving the other person or ourselves.
If we are going to truly heal and live our best lives free of guilt, pain and suffering, then I feel we have to share our stories, expose our vulnerabilities and move past them with forgiveness. As I have with my ex, who chose to make this mistake and betray our love some time ago. It is also how I choose to create my art. Not only does it help heal me, but it also allows me to share my gift of music with all of you. Although it can be very painful to create under these circumstances, the reward has ALWAYS been much greater than the risk.

Seeing Sully just start to break playing piano hit hard. Sometimes we forget celebrities are people just like us and suffer heartbreak like us. Truth hit me so hard. Music is definitely therapy and I thank Godsmack for being there in some of my darkest times.. They'll never know they've saved my life before.
That's funny. I've been very close to the industry and I can tell you that sometimes artists hide behind their music and are actually more broken apart than we are watching them. Celebrities just have an element to disguise themselves so we don't see the real life. In the end we're all just flesh and blood and we all have feelings. We've all loved and lost 👊

Sully is by far one of the greatest song writers of at least my generation. And he only writes about real life. And this one is right up there with the best. Thank you for always seeming to write soundtracks to my life. And I’m sure many others as well.

He excels at every instruments he plays, amazing singer, drummer, and the songwriting, especially this song, and 'under your scars', really touch so many people deeply. This song is my first love and while I was pregnant he broke my jaw and that was the the last good bye again. 5 years later I found my true love and have been together since then. It will come together. Married on a Friday 13 th of our 13 years of being together as a friend to lover and soul mate. Blessed Be.

First time i heard this song it hit me right in the gut. I was in the same position as Sully, and still hurt to this day. I have played and replayed this song 100x since then and I feel his pain every time. On the bright side, this song has made me a Godsmack fan. Thank you Sully and group, heal up brother!! This song mirrors my divorce. The first time I heard it, it might as well have been me retelling my own story to someone. That relationship ended around the release of Serenity, which helped me through that time. Godsmack has and continues to speak to me in ways no other band has. Thank you, Sully.

I myself met my x when she was 16 she had left town for few years, when she came back. we ran into each other, then married after 20 years later, left me for another woman. Said she fell out of love, but I know it's deeper. Thanks.
When I was married. My husband and I got to see " Godsmack" in concert twice in Pennsylvania. Loved it. Godsmack will always be my favorite music group. Their music is awesome. Love their hard songs and acoustic songs too. ❤❤❤
I got to see them in the Giant Center, Hershey Park, show was amazing but they never came back. Rumor was they used pyro inside and they weren't supposed to!!!! Haha rock and roll right!!
@@18wheels13speeds we ( my ex and I) saw them at the Wells Fargo arena in Philadelphia. We sat forth row from the stage. And the Tower theater in Upper Darby. Godsmack was great both times we saw them. Very happy memories for me.

One rainy day!!! Right now I'm going through some very similar shit and it's really hurting me at the moment and has been for about a month now. I'm all alone, no true friends or any support in anyway 😢 First I lost my father on December 11th, 2023 and also around that time my girlfriend (of 3 years) moved out on me (she said we needed a break but I know what she really meant) while I am still trying to cope with my loss. It's just been a very painful couple of months 💔 😢. I sometimes feel like I wanna just, you know..so any feedback/support would be helpful. Thanks anyone ❤
When I lost my girlfriend 5 years ago, I couldn't work, exercise, laugh or focus. I stood in front of a coffee machine and didn't know how to use it. And above all, I couldn't express how it felt. But you did it with this song, Sully, and I thank you for that. I feel better today, but the emotions you give to this song still blows me away.

I went through a similar incident of being betrayed from someone I was married too but had spent 31 years with. It has been 9 years now since it happened and there are still times I am so emotional I can hardly function. I have played this song 100’s of times thank you for your gift.

It took me about 20 times to get through the entire song. It hit so close to home, almost as if someone wrote it knowing what I had gone through. I finally made it through and it was cathartic and painful. This is one of those rare songs that hits right. Thank you for creating something so healing.
I was in the Jr High Band, no one in that room was particularly popular, cool or gleaming with self confidence, I can imagine 45 years later those in band aren’t pretty similar. Several months back I had my wife come to the living room and I replayed the Unforgettable video for her, as we discussed how much that probably changed the lives of those kids that participated or at least the positive memories she had tears in her eyes , so through the pain, laughter and determination of Godsmacks journey you have made a positive difference, thank you all

Sully , I went thru the samething , the person I loved left me for another man and we started our divorce . We had to put it on hold while I deployed to Saudi Arabia for Desert Sheild/Desert Storm . Being 10,000 miles away knowing that I had a divorce to face when coming home was hard . My MILITARY FAMILY was my support . I just celebrated my 30th anniversary with my second wife . Music to this day is what soothes my PTSD and yes , I have seen GODSMACK in concert !! Keep pushing forward man !!

Sully I am sorry you had to experience this in your life. After all you have been through you truly are a survivor. After I read your book I learned so much about you that I did not know. Growing up listening to your early Godsmack music was like no other. Your voice is so unique and harmonizes with the rest of the band like a signature. There must be something out there greater for you. All your accomplishments though and your success Fame you have a wonderful daughter And a mom and dad that would do anything for you just as you would for them. Some may say karma but I like to think something bigger out there is for you something better. Then what you had. I am sure you will get through this chapter of your life. I hope you write a second book after Godsmack. Let yourself tell the rest of the story of your life. I hope you are feeling better today and the next day is even better.

It proves you are human. The human element makes it real. A situation that sadly all too many of us can relate to. But there is life after betrayal. An Amazing and Beautiful life!!! I absolutely LOVE this song. Scars had been an amazing song for me and I had shared it with someone I loved that timing had never worked out for us to have a relationship. I got divorced and she had said she was finally going to divorce her husband and we had talked a lot about there being an "us" and her giving me a real chance. Unfortunately I found out she started seeing someone else and never gave me a chance. The lyrics of this song really hit home and gave me some closure I never had with her. I still haven't shared this song with her as I haven't messaged her in months. I'm not sure I should and stir up that pain again. I waited over 20 years to have a relationship with this woman, wanting her when I was single, and suppressing those feelings when I was married, only to be gutted in the end by her. As with Sully, music gives me solace, and this song helped put an ending to my feelings from what I thought was a relationship.
I have been listening to Godsmack from day one, and I swear sometimes it's like they are in my head. This Sunday, April 7th will be 36 yrs my hubby and I have been married, and man it's been one helluva ride. You don't know how many of your songs especially Truth describes us. He's here but not here. Your songs have saved me more than once. I've been codependent for all those years and still am. Thank you for sharing your pain and letting others know they are not alone. My health is going down hill and fast. My only request is to see you guys live. I've missed you twice now in Michigan. Hoping to make the Canada show in Windsor if I can get mt passport, hard when you aren't allow to drive at the moment. But again, thanks you Sully and all you guys! I listen to you everyday. Extremely personal insight . My heart has been beating for 60 yrs to keep me alive , music has been the fuel for my heart to continue its process. I have been on my own after a relationship totally broke me 22 years ago and will never re enter another moving forward. It’s amazing how the strongest Tarzan can be turned into the weakest Jane by the actions of another.Thank God for music , not sure if it heals but certainly know it speaks louder than a 1000 voice’s ever could .Godsmack have produced numerous songs that have connected and guided me as I am sure they have for tens of thousands even more of others. The first time I listened to “Lighting up the Sky”, this song hit me like a punch to the gut. I was in the car, on my way to work, and I was crying by the second line. All I could think was that Sully had some how managed to get in my head, seen what my ex-husband had done to me, and turned it into “Truth”. It’s been five years, but it felt like it’d just happened as I listened. Godsmack and Sully have gotten me through some of the hardest times in my life; their music is a gift. I’m in a heartbreaking see you cry Sully, but we as your fans need you strong and like David Draiman says some times darkness can show you the light, you save my life with the song under your scars because in 2022 I had womb removal surgery I wanted to have children but now I can’t and I don’t have kids and when I was pregnant more than ten years ago I lost my baby and I didn’t know I was pregnant so after my surgery I have a deep depression the only good thing of all this is your under your scars helps me and my boyfriend is helping me to keep me alive, thanks guys for your great music

Very different circumstances, but I'm just as heartbroken. Just lost my wife to cancer , was with her since I was 16. Very passionate relationship, either for good or bad. This song made me cry from the first time I heard it, still do. So true that music helps us heal, it never cheats, argues or leaves. I have been a godsmack forever fam since i was 14 and now im creeping up to 40. Your music has help me through my darkest times and also has been apart of my happiest. I think sometimes we as fans forget your life isnt perfect either. I hate seeing a man cry breaks my heart, but seeing sully cry now that made my heart crack into 10000 pieces!!!!
Going through divorce myself I can so relate to this song. Mine isn't betrayal related but the love is gone. When you are in a relationship we all dream about growing old together and boy does it hurt when this isn't the case anymore. Keep writing those beautiful songs they are therapy for the soul. ❤
Thanks for sharing your emotions with us sully. Many of us can relate with having a significant other that can’t handle being alone. My wife and I divorced after 10 years of marriage and after several years I finally healed from it and moved on. Then she got cancer and died bringing back all those emotions and pain. Having to hold back and be strong for our kids was the hardest part. I would wait until they were in n bed and go on a drive so I could cry, yell and just let out what I’d been holding in pretending to be strong in our kids eyes.
