This is an introduction to IPv4 addressing and Subnetting. But the same method can be used for IPv6.
(Please excuse the quality of this video...it is very old and it was one of my very first videos when I started on TH-cam...this video started out to be a JOKE...and it eventually became a hit...who knew?)

10 years ago this video has been released. And it still rocks! Best explanation I have ever heard!
Most teachers on this subject look frustrated or confused. This man seems angry about it but it somehow really helps absorb the information. I have watched my college professors video on this, another random guy, and this one. (all 3 were around 45min) and this is BY FAR the best video on the subject. Thank you very much.

@jasmit kaur sahi ...when you count for subnets or hosts, you start by counting from 2 and double as you go (i.e.: 2,4,8,16,32,64....etc.). Also, when you count for subnets you count from Left to Right. When you count for hosts, you count from Right to Left. So, you always subtract 2 from the HOST side and you only subtract 2 from the NETWORK side if you are NOT using the Zero subnet. In my examples, the only time, I count by 1 and double as I go (i.e.: 1,2,4,8,16,32,64128) is when I count the BIT values in each OCTET. I do have a YT video called "Starting at 2 & Double As You Go"...this might clarify the method to my madness.

I've been out of the IT game for a few years, and even when I did work with submasks, I didn't have to do much unless it was giving a machine a static IP. Aside from that, all the networks were already built before I started working at my job, so all these lessons never really came up.
Im looking to get back into the IT industry, and wanted to brush up on my facts. I had no idea that creating subnets like this had so many facets. I admit, I had to watch this video at least 5 times in a row, pausing, taking notes, copying his diagrams....I figured out on my own about counting by doubling each number in the sequence beginning by 2 for subnets (left to right) and same but except right to left for the hosts; but I admit it took several times of me wondering why the hell he didn't start with 1.
It all makes sense now, reading these comments its funny how many people it threw off about why he began by 1 and then by 2; I finally understand sub networking now, and this video is the best i have seen on youtube.
Just a suggestion +The Networking Doctors but since this is the most popular youtube video on the subject and getting close to 1 Million views, I think it would be helpful to make annotations (like scrolling text perhaps, pop up windows?) explaining why a you switch from starting at 1's and then switching to 2's. The Bit Sequence vs. The subnet/host (2's) sequence. If you just added that little note in the video itself each time you do that then it would really be a perfect video.
Just a thought, but love your teaching style. You sound hard and strict in a way, like a military person really taking us all on a sub netting bootcamp. Your demeanor really gives us incentive to get this down and push us to think hard and logically.
This has helped tremendously, please continue putting video's like this on youtube!

@@thenetworkingdoctors I was wondering. Are any of your labs downloadable. I'm having a hard time recreating the network based on the topology you show in your videos. Right now I'm working on your eigrp lesson. The 1841 routers you use don't have a serial port so I'm using generic. And I tried a cidr 30 (255.255.255.252) on my ip addresses but they are conflicting with each other. So I adjusted them a bit changing the third octete seemed to work. But now they aren't working on the 10.0.0.0 network. I'm assuming I would just need to do a few more configurations with eigrp. I'm sure I can figure it out so it will work. But I'm having a bit of difficulty.
I learned more by watching this video a couple times than I learned in 10 weeks with my lame ass instructor! Thank you so much for posting this video.

All you need to is focus on the mask they gave you.
252 allots for only 2 IP's
248 allots for only 6 IP's
240 allots for 16 IP's...this would be the best choice.

Oh I forgot to subtract two from the host side. But thanks for the mathematical equation. all I do is simply x.x.x.1111|0000 which equals 240 in the last octet, count by 2 from right to left, and double as you go till you get to the line and subtract 2. Oh by the way, lol, I was answering from a restaurant having lunch, through my Iphone...LOL!!!!!!

I was trying to understand why at 17:44 you started counting from 2 rather than starting from 1 (as in the normal 1 to 128). Earlier in the video, you were counting starting from 1. How do you know when to do either of these?

This confounded me as well. I believe the case is: Count for hosts, right to left, starting with 2. Count for subnets, left to right, starting with 2. The increment (and therefore the broadcast calculation number) is derived from the BIT VALUE, which starts with 1 (starting from the right). This is why he counts the hosts and subnets on the bottom and counts the increment number and the broadcast calculation number on the top. Bottom: Start with 2's. Top: use bit value. Please correct me if I'm wrong about this. I've started taking Laz's CCNA class on Udemy. It's great! Thanks Laz!

Thanks Ma, don't worry about it, I get a lot of that same misconception. Unfortunately, most people do judge a book by its cover. However, I try to give everyone the benefit of the doubt and as a famous Psychologist said, listen to the other person as you might be able to learn something from them....it's been a great advice for me anyway.

Why when calculating the /28 Network you started counting the mask bits at 1 but when calculating the network with 100 hosts you started the mask bits at 2? Am I missing something or was that just a mistake? Great video though very helpfull.

I've been trying to understand subnetting for a long time. I don't mean to be disrespectful, honestly, but there are a lot of videos on TH-cam with contributions from people that either make it exceptionally difficult, or do not know what they're talking about. I was just about to give up when I came across this video. Thank god I did. This has got to be the very best video in terms of clarity in explanation, teaching technique, and knowledge. Thank you sincerely for providing this exceptionally good video. A sincere thank you. I totally understand it now thanks to you.
