Primitive Technology: Spear Thrower

  • A spear thrower is a simple tool that allows the user to throw a spear further than by hand alone. It is a small length of wood with a hook in the end that fits into a notch in the back of the spear. The extra power and distance gained by the thrower is due to the extra leverage it gives.
    I cut a small branch with a minor branch coming off the side. I shaped the minor branch into a spur to fit into the end of the spear. The thrower was about 65 cm long.
    For the spear, I cut a thin sapling approximately 2 m long and about 1.5 cm thick. I carved a cup in the end of the spear for the spur to fit into. Then I bound the back of the spear with bark fiber to prevent the wood from splitting. The head of the spear was simply charred in the fire and scrapped against a rock to sharpen it (during practice the head regularly breaks so only a sharpened tip is used to save work).
    To use the spear thrower, the spur of the thrower is inserted into the cup of the spear. The spear and thrower are held at about shoulder height. The thrower is quickly flicked forward and the spear propelled towards the target. As the spear leaves the thrower it bends slightly storing energy until it jumps of the spur. During flight, the flexible spear wobbles and oscillates paradoxically giving the spear some stability in flight.
    The throws in the video show what can be done in one afternoon of practice (my arm got sore and I wanted to start on other projects). I hit the target a few times at a distance 15 m. It is more powerful than a spear thrown by hand alone but is difficult to learn. The spear I made could have been a fraction lighter and so would have greater speed. Another improvement would be to add flights to the spear so it would be more accurate and fly straighter (like an atlatl).
    The extra energy gained from a Woomera's (Australian spear thrower) use has been calculated as 4 times that of compound bow (Wikipedia). It's easy to make (this took less than a day) but requires lots of training to become accurate.

    Ancient UK warriors had a similar device they used to target their enemies legs at the midpoint. It's said there has never been a more horrible noise on a battlefield than the wails of their victims. You can still hear the sorrowful shrieking to this day, of those Brit knee spears.

      'disliking' something on the internet. Such an alien concept. Would you like us all to like the same things? Personally, a difference in opinion can be quite important if its conveyed in the proper manner. Your comment about someone disliking a simple video on youtube being an error of human society? Spend some time thinking about who really is more of an 'error'.

As i saw the tip of that spear in slow motion heading right towards me I saw my life before my eyes. I know it’s years too late and John Plant won’t see this comment, but I highly recommend reading The Life and Adventures of William Buckley, the escaped convict who lived with the Wothaurong Tribe of Australian Aborigines from 1803 to 1835 to the point where when he again made contact with Europeans for the first time he’d forgotten how to speak english. He was 24 when he first was found and accepted by the Wothaurong and 56 when he encountered John Batman’s exploration party.
    He learned to hunt as skilfully as the Wothaurong and in his book he mentions they used spear throwers like this and could hit kangaroos on the run at 40 meters. They used 3 kinds of spears. One for hunting which was about 7 feet long, one for inter tribal warfare which was about 10 feet long and one other which I think was ceremonial for corroborees.

    Your Atlatl wasn't dried and cured properly. It will warp as it dries. You should have skinned the bark and let it cure and straightened it as it dried. Also, adding a streamer to the tail would have given you far better accuracy. Finally, hardening the tip does not require charring however I don't believe you charred the wood too deep and the blackness was superficial. Finally, adding a downward curvature to the atlatl handle would give you greater strength and control in aiming.

      The mammoth hunters did not use atatals as their points were much larger and wider at the base where hafting was done. They used lances. I have never seen a hafted dart point or arrow point that was not exactly as wide as the base or the distance between side notches. The big game hunters had to run the points 18 inches into the chest cavity of a mammoth to kill it and a atatal will not allow this. The first atatals were used in the early archaic based on the type, size and weight of a point. Putting a large Clovis point on an atatal will not work as the fore shaft that fits into the dart is too narrow to handle the stress.
      A vast majority of points people call spear heads were actually knives and a dart point has a base that is no wider than the foreshaft into which it was hafted. No dart point was over three inches at the most and a vast majority were much smaller. i base this on throwing an atatal and at what point the projectile point is too large for being effective when thrown. Maximine effective killing range is 40 yards at longest. Physics have not changed over the years and the Indians knew very well what worked and did not.

    • @scotthuffman5475
      @scotthuffman5475 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Need a dart point hafted on a fore shaft. Sorta like bullets as when the hunter threw the dart the projectile remained in the animal and the dart recovered and another dart placed into the dart shaft for a second hit if needed. Point is the hunter carried several hafted points on a foreshaft when hunting.

We literally can not live without each other. by each other i mean lots of others, not just a few thousands. it is kind of scary... i think thats why hes got so much support in this channel.

      Yeah it's crazy how dependant we are if we think about it. I read about a guy who made a chicken sandwich literally from scratch. Meaning, he planted the wheat for the bread, raised and slaughtered the chicken, got salt from seawater. All in all he paid around 500$ and it took him about 6 months and the sandwich didn't even taste that good aparently.

    • @TengYuan
      @TengYuan 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      unless he ate what he planted himself in that half a year. he didn't really make that sandwich himself. but yep. more to your point. we have climbed pretty high up the ladder now.

  • @Alloran

    Alright, I have returned to my family home in the woods. This shit right here needs to be attempted. I might not be able to make a metal forge out of Aussie mud magic but I can goddamn well sharpen a couple of sticks.
    Well played sir, you are a champion among men.
    Update: The attempt has been made. The throwing stick is pretty cool gets a lot of leverage. I've put about an hour of throwing with it and I'm going to try a few different types of spears. My current one might be too large and heavy (as well as has a nasty bow to it that makes the spear torque around sideways) to get a proper distance but it hits hard. Tip will break clean off even if you fire harden so pretty sweet.
