  • The A 951, this is the road running along Thirlmere Reservoir that was damaged in the floods of 2015 - 2016. A vital route that is damaged from Grasmere at Dunmail Raise to St John's in the Vale. This road should allows traffic to cross Cumbria to Keswick and it is closed, or is it.?
The answer is less clear than you think, that is why we decided to make this video. To inform you and give you a place to post and receive updates.
We have emailed the Contractors, Armstrong and Cubby, the Security firm CRS, bus company Stagecoach, Cumbria Tourist Board, United Utilities and any other local business that may have information. We asked them to post any news they have in the comments section below to keep you informed of developments.
You see, even the locals we talked to are unsure of what is happening and there is little information on display. Unlike the information at Pooley Bridge we showed you in our last TH-cam video, where Story Construction have a notice board. That video is called: Ullswater before after and during the Floods of 2015 and 2016. Pooley Bridge update • Ullswater before after...
CRS Security and Cubby Contractors were helpful in giving us some information, but without being able to approach workers on the closed 4 mile section of road, there is much we don't know. Such as, what are they doing on Helvellyn and how did they get the digger up there. Will the car parks around Thirlmere be repaired by the opening of the road. And the biggest question, how long before the hole of the National Park will be open to tourists and the public and that includes all of the footpaths.
So keep returning to this video and read the posts for the latest on this vital route across Lakeland.

Good news, the A 591 was opened to all traffic today.

If buses and work vehicles can get through, why is the road not open?

Good question, with a managed traffic flow, say letting traffic flow in one direction for 20 minutes, then the other way for 20 minutes, it could be possible I would have thought. Anybody out there with the answer?

+Alfred Barrow With the amount of traffic that use the A591, it would be impractical to expect all those vehicles to squeeze along the single track road around the back of Thirlmere, then through the even narrower new road they've built on the forest track. It would make queues 10 miles long and delay the build even longer.

+Kim Beale Dear Kim,The A591 is a vital route across Cumbria. The sooner it is open the better. I have seen other A roads working with traffic lights and that has proved a better option than closing the road completely. In my opinion the traffic could flow quickly in one direction for 20 minutes and that would clear the all Vehicles. Then for 10 minutes traffic could be allowed to clear and a security vehicle could check the route was safe before allowing traffic to flow for 20 minutes in the other direction. In the worst scenario any vehicle would only be delayed for 30 minutes. That is better than a lengthy denture. The security firm working there could inform drivers of the situation as they stop. There is enough room for cars to turn round and use another route should they wish, they are after all doing that now. It just needs organising.

Yes Alfred, you have a point. I was driving along the A 590 into Barrow in Furness yesterday and there were several setts of traffic lights on the road but there was no delays, or traffic congestion, and that road is busier than the A591.

+Alfred Barrow Yes but it takes longer than 20 minutes to drive from Dunmail to Thirlspot along the back of Thirlmere. And, with the amount of vehicles that use the road queues would be longer than 20 mins, meaning a wait of over an hour for the next slot to travel in the required direction. Also, what happens if an ambulance needs to travel along the road, which is single track for about 8 miles? It could pass 8 or 9 cars in passing places, but not 50 or 60. Traffic lights work well for short diruptions - up to a mile maybe. Traffic lights would be impractical for singling a road the length we are talking about here. Would the buses be able to jump the queue as they have a schedule to keep? I can't think of anywhere where traffic lights control a section as long as from Dunmail Raise to Thirlspot, which is the length the road is singled? What about the people who live at Wythbyrn? if they were popping out, and the traffic was going the wrong way, is it fair to expect them to wait 20 minutes until it's going the direction they want. There are too many variable factors, not to mention the length of the section we're on about here.
