Building a Deck and Screen Porch PART 2 - Framing and Sheathing the Roof
ฝัง
- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 2 ม.ค. 2025
- In part 2 of this deck and screen porch build we are setting roof rafters and sheathing the roof! This is a huge screen porch and a pretty steep roof pitch. The main thing we want to achieve is have the roof come perfectly off the existing roof so it looks like it was always there. It was a hot day to be building a roof but we got it done and it is looking awesome so far!

The Pat Cam is Emmy award worthy, more Pat Cam. I need to see those stain strokes to really sharpen my skills.
Hahah pat stain cam in real time would make for a great video lol
Beautiful work gentlemen. Love the Pat Cam.. you can't legislate for that type of incompetence on the nail throwing.
Hahah I told him to go around and have some fun, he’s an entertainer to the core
I was going to hit the like button, but than the pat cam started
Lol seems as though people either loved it or hated it
Project is mad decent. Pat cam captures what we are all feeling day to day on sites. In short he’s a spirit animal
Hahah definitely a spirit animal
I'm just curious of a few structural points... I didn't see any hangers on the rafters or anything so it appears you were using the LVL as a ridge board rather that a ridge beam? But also it's a vaulted ceiling? Am I missing something here?
I LOVE PAT CAM.
I told him to get some funny footage and he delivered big time!
Got to love both the video haters AND the lovers since you were brave and confident enough to put yourselves out there! I really liked everything you filmed, including the personal touches. It's apparent you and your peeps care about the work you do so just take note of the positive and helpful comments. Did you do a continuation video for the deck and hardscaping? I need just about the same work done and I'm not that far from NJ (mid-Hudson, NY)...looking forward to connecting.
Well done boys
Thank you!!
Commentary on the Pat Cam reminded me of the character from Cloverfield as he was trying to record everything that was happening. lol "Great footage."
Is there a PART 3? I would really like to see the finished product, if not all of the work. I am just thinking about how to replace the old deck and this build looks like something I would like to consider.
You used a single ply LVL for my 14x20 deck like you did. A engineer told me it had to be double ply minimum. He told me to add rafter ties and collar ties. This is a disaster for me since I'm after the opened-up cathedral look. I was told I could put another structural beam underneath. Any thoughts how you would handle this?
Sean that thumbnail is spot on! Still loving the content!
Thanks bro!!! I knew my thumbnail game needed work so I’m gonna try out some new stuff! And keep the tips coming cause they work everytime, you’re a genius 🤣
Great video. Thanks for sharing
Thanks Matthew!
Sean Shacka Lacka!! Bring it Son, Absolutely bring it!!! Those clouds were lookin mad serious in da background but, not on that day Mother-nature!! Lookin great Bud!! Hoping all is well, Dirty Jersey out!!!
Oh & FIRST!!!!
Always getting on here first bro!!
Pat cam reminding me of being a labourer and walking around keeping my day fun while I gotta be the grunt. Hhaha
Exelent job muy bonito trabajo
Thank you!!
Great job
Put that hammer back in your purse and get a framing hammer haha. That thing was cute. I always trust a DeWalt man and a flexvolt man, well that's marriage material. Looks good.
Hahah I just bought it like two weeks ago and was only like 15 bucks, hits nails in just perfectly
Bravo. very nice👍👍
Thank you my friend!!
Pat can honestly phases me off.... honestly can't believe how he was just destroying materials just to be funny... mess my material up on purpose I'll cut ya severance pay on the spot....kill the pat cam...put it in ya lead carpenter's hands sheesh
Pisses
Haha I told him to get some funny footage, he doesn’t go around doing that all day lol. I think the boost in the moral by joking around a little bit and making us laugh is worth more than a couple broken nails
Glad I’m not the only one!
Hahaha the “pat” cam is funny
Great job buddy keep it up. chea!!!!
Woooo!! Thanks man!
Great work. This is a really cool project. You always answer the questions I have while I'm watching.
Thanks a lot!!
Loving what you’re putting out!!
Thanks a lot Jason!
Nicely done ( the building and the filming/editing ) and looks like you have a good talented crew. Off subject at 4:15 that backyard the size of a football field without a tree or bush in it?
Hahah yeah it’s a huge backyard!
I just like to see what it looks like when it's finished
Soon enough!! Another 2 weeks or so
Any part 3 on this video ? Looking forward to see the final result.
Pat Cam is amazing!!!
Hahah seems as though people either love it or hate it 🤣
Does your code not require your ridge board to be deeper than your rafters?
It does but this was spec’d for 2x8 rafters which is why we have a 2x10 ridge. We had to swap out rafters at the last minute to meet the height of the truss framing on the existing house. Afterwards we packed down the ridge and the inspector was fine with it
Do you use the 21 degree nailer to build the frame as well? If so, is there any problem with deck separation? Always used screws. Slower, but never pull away. Looking good too.
We do! Screws are used on some components like the ledger and some other connection points but for the most part it is held together with nails. Never had a problem with anything like that. I think putting extra blocking and bracing helps a lot
Love it
Nice.
Thanks!
this work is getting sensational
Thank you my friend!!
Looking good. Except technically, code states ridge must be deeper than rafters. If you set the ridge to the bottom of the rafters and clip the tops, most code checks won’t notice.
We were planning on using 2x8 rafters but the truss roof we were coming off made us make a last minute change to 2x12 to get the height we needed. So we packer down the ridge rafter so they are sitting nice now.
Pat, you’re fired!
I like the way you shared around the cam footage bro, nice and hopefully you get more roofs like this mate🤙
Thanks man!! This is definitely a fun one, can’t wait to start trimming out the inside of the porch!
Is there a part 3 to this?? Excited to see the final build.
No more Pat Cam , got motion sickness, but I would make a few quarter inch templates instead of 2x templates for the rafter cuts . But in all enjoyed the video ...
Thanks victor!
How’d you tie in that ridge board to the existing?
Hello, not a big fan of the Pat Cam but ok... personally I like when you explain a lot about the structure of what you are building, also you never showed the fly rafters (I think that’s how you called them) Question: are those 2x10 rafters?
Great videos... thank you.
Pat cam was very polarizing lol. The fly rafters are highlighted a bit during one of the time lapses, they are 2x12 rafters. We were planning on 2x8s but the existing structure had trusses so we had to go with something higher to match it up
A good n pro framer always use a hitachi nailer nothing beats that nailer gun
I agree, the hitachi is a beast
What is the width of the door opening for the 8'x6' shed?
The dude I think his name is Andy he’s a beast!
The Pat cam is the dad as kid that came to work with dad
Enjoyed the video. The way ya'll are extending the gable roof is exactly what I want to do to my 12 x 16 shop (shed lol). And make it 12 x 24. Wish I could've seen how you tied it into the roof and all. Don't want any leaks. It was my first shed build and now I need more room to work in there. Also...the roofer,..what was on his hammer that held onto the nails as he hammered the roof down towards the end?
Some hammers come with a slot on top of the head to hold a nail while you set it! Just match your rafters on the existing structure then sheath it and peel back the shingles to tie in the new ones
Can that yard get any bigger?
It’s huge!
Was Pat having withdrawals from staining today?
He’s like bob ross, staining is his happy place!
I'm curious how you learned to do this stuff Sean. I love your videos man.
Mostly from google, TH-cam and trial and error!
@@THEpremieroutdoor Lol, TH-cam university. I've learned a lot from you man, thanks for paying it forward.
New drinking game for this video. Take a shot everytime he says the word “rafters”
4 min in now and I’m hammered
@@nickcross2684 Yeah cuz they're building RAFTERS!! Lol
Pat Cam-
“No you kicked the camera. Well you kicked a little bit of my face but it was great footage” 😂
Hahah pat cam was very polarizing
I have been watching for awhile and have decided to try a new pattern on my deck. I’m going with two sections of herringbone that have a breaker board and the whole thing is picture framed. But how do I calculate how many boards I need for the herringbone sections?
Thanks for watching! It’s honestly really tough to figure out...make sure you get them long enough to go the full diasgonal measurement and order a few extra!
Looks great nice work! What state are you located in?🇺🇸👍🇺🇸👍🇺🇸
Roof frame is not code in my state.
Ridge beam need to be greater than rafters. Respect to the guy installing the plywood, about the messing with the nails, that is not funnnny, and didn't make me laugh, that is more westing time, and materil. I will recommend to talk more about the job, or explain more the progress of the job.
Right on! Rafters were spec’d at 2x8 which is why we have a 2x10 ridge. Last minute we had to change to 2x12 rafters to meet the height of the roof trusses on the existing house. Afterwards we packed down the ridge and the inspector was fine with it
Great work on the video and the project. Be mindful of safety as you gain more subscribers, you never know who could be watching (OSHA). No fall protection for the guys and the ladder walkway is totally inaccurate for what you are working on. I’m a safety guy at heart and would never want to see any of your amazing crew get hurt..
Very true, we don’t do a lot of overhead stuff like this so we don’t have the ideal setup, but you’re right it’s worth investing in now
1/2 inch ply no clips? That wont pass building codes in texas
Wheres part 3
Did Pat forget his Ridellan today?
You should hang your mailbox by the front door. You should get an extension ladder to get on the roof
You ain’t wrong
How much something like that cost ??? 👀
Instead of all the kerf cuts in the fly rafter notch, just make two cuts across the rafter for the sides of the notch, roll the rafter it on its side and make one plunge cut. Time is money.
That will for sure save a few minutes!
I said the same thing but to each his own
Yeah I was going to hit the subscribe but the pat cam lost me... the nail part 🤦♂️
If you hit subscribe you can find out if he figures out the right way to do it
Really loved the work , but PAT CAM is a disgrace to the industry.
Disgrace to the industry I think is a little harsh 🤣🤣 I told him to get some funny footage and he did just that lol
The pat cam was hilarious hahaha
Hahah seems like people either loved it or hated it 🤣
Where is part 3?
When Are you going to post another Video
Coming later today!
Pat cam!
I told him to gather some funny footage and he delivered big time lol
Really enjoy watching you build. Fantastic. Please stop with panning the Pat Cam all over the place. You're making me nauseous. Sorry guy's, you're killing me...
🤣🤣🤣 I got a little excited when the head mount for the camera came lol
@@THEpremieroutdoor i gotta little dizzy. Otherwise, Pat Cam is cool and funny.
Where's Part 3?????
Love the video and all the great advise until it got to the Pat Cam. Don't know anyone that would purposely wreck their nail loads for entertainment. Just me I guess kinda of downer to such a responsible builder. The hammer drop was funny and not on purpose which was more like entertainment.
Your elude tiredness
I hope OSHA is not watching this.
Ok
Great info & video but the background music playing on a loop is distracting. No music needed!
How to test blood sugar?
Pat cam was funny but not very useful. I’d like to see more close-up details of the more difficult parts of a project like this so that I can become a bit more educated. Subscribed.
And he was never heard from again
every 12 inches it goes up 9 feet?!....yeah thats a pitch
you need to fire the camera guy.. my head is spinning with your filming. Other than that, not too bad
way to many ads in your videos
Take it up with google I guess lol
I was all in until Pat cam, how unprofessional.
No more Pat cam please
Ok!
Too much inserted drama. Don’t make things seem harder than they are like setting the roof rafter. Not a big deal. Pat Cam is stupid.
But the drama is fun
*then
I would fire that clown
does he have jolly ranchers in his mouth or something ....i cant understand a word hes saying
Me or pat lol? I chew a lot of gum so probably me
Ha I keep trying to figure out what’s in your cheek also. Is it big league gum? It really makes your cheek look big haha
Pat, quit screwing around and messing up stuff!
I stopped watching at Pat Cam.
Would have been a cool POV without all the time wasting nonsense.
Otherwise, great stuff!
Good video but not great... should give more details info instead of all the obnoxious and anoying bs. Not impress either with evident lack of safety all around... one day something will hapen but i'll be to late. The whole attitude calls for disaster waiting to happen... saw this too many times.Sorry to be negative but it calls for it.
Wow, tossing sharp items like nails and destroying building supplies just to be funny, OSHA would stop your work and start writing fines for that shit. Would not allow that kind of horse play on a work site. Total Unsafe. Would not work for you either.
You should like you’d be a great time at a party 🙄
clearly you know zero about workplace safety...and you don't care about the health and wellbeing of your workers or yourself
Geez harsh comment
dumb youtube
Thanks for the insight hotshot
4 years uploading videos and only 52k subscribers, maybe a change in how you film and present your content is in order.maybe less of this guy talking to the camera and more of the actual build.
