Die Seele ruht in Jesu Händen,

Incredible. Bach built the foundation of all the musical ideas of western classical music -- he's anticipating Chopin or even Ravel here!

Sicherlich eine der schönsten und ergreifendsten Arie, die je komponiert worden ist. Meine Bewunderung gilt Bach und dieser herrlichen gehaltvollen Einspielung!

@@imusepiano I was very fortunate to have been a friend of Vladimir Horowitz and he would have flipped for your Playing . I used to take walks with him ( during my Juilliard Masters Years 1976 and 1977 ) near his Townhouse on East 94th Street in Manhattan. I have over 18 years of letters and notes that we corresponded . I was honored when His Secretary phoned me about a year after his passing and was shocked when she told me that Mr. Horowitz honored me by putting all of our Correspondence into The Yale University Vladimir Horowitz Archives !……… I almost fainted . It was the biggest honor of my life .
You have that rarest of gifts...the ability to get behind the notes . Mr. Horowitz told me that one can listen to 100 recordings of a piece and maybe only one Pianist is truly Transmitting the Soul of the piece . I was lucky to have a Great Teacher at Juilliard. Mr. Joseph Raieff Mr. Raieff Studied With Bauer, Siloti, And Hoffmann. He was the Head Of The Piano Department at Juilliard and taught there for 60 years ! He lived to 96 years old. I heard Mr. Horowitz perform over 12 times in person in Carnegie Hall. . He told me his opinion about many of the great Pianists during our walks and I was often quite surprised. ......I really should write a book but I’m getting a bit older now and a bit lazier.
When I told Mr. Raieff about the first time I met Mr. Horowitz he almost fell off his chair . He told everyone in Juilliard that Alan Bash was Horowitz’s best friend which was of course a total exaggeration ( and made me laugh quite a bit )....but for years all the Piano students in Juilliard asked me endless questions about my conversations with him about Pianists, Technique etc . Mr. Horowitz encouraged me Very much but I just didn’t want to enter Competitions....he surprisingly was totally against them as well. I was rather shy on stage and always felt better playing in my Living Room.
I was wondering which teachers you have studied with. You have had superb training ....keep up the GREAT WORK 👑👑👑👑👑. Best Wishes, Alan Bash .

@@alanbash2921 Oh, your words are so kind!! And wow, you know THE Vladimir Horowitz IN PERSON?! I can't imagine what kind of conversations you had, must be very inspiring.
As for competition, I play better in less pressured environment too. :)
Thank you for your question at the end of the comment. That has made me reflect in gratitude!
I studied in Indonesia with a lot of different teachers, but So Kim Wie and Sienny Debora have been my primary teachers when I was teenagers. Sienny particularly made me fall in love with music so much. My undergrad teacher is Thomas Hecht (a pupil of Leon Fleisher, teaching at Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music in Singapore at that time). I learnt a great deal of pedalling and he taught me (or rather, made me) listen to myself when practicing. Marian Hahn from Peabody came to Singapore for a semester and she taught me practicing strategies, phrasing, and body awareness. This recording was made when I did my Master, when I was studying with Sara Davis Buechner at UBC (She is a graduate of Juilliard too. I'm guessing she was there for her undergrad around 1977-1981 as well?). She inspired me to think and express music authentically.
And last but not least - hoping to continue to be inspired by the Creator and Source of Beauty and Music :)
Anyway, appreciate you sharing your encouraging comment! Best wishes!

Dear mister Alan, at times like this I am grateful that the internet exists for without it I would have not read such wonderful stories nor listened to such wonderful recordings. Would it be brass to ask you to atleast consider the possibility of writing about your time with Mr. Horrowitz ? As an upcoming pianist composer who holds Mr. Horrowitz in the highest of esteem it would bring me, and many others, great joy. Regardless of the outcome I would like to Bless you and your family,
@imusepiano your playing shows a deep connection with God, as he rewards those that dare to follow in his light like the great master J.s. Bach himself. As a lonely student composer myself that considers J.S. Bach his master and the heavens his audience you bring me hope that there is still an audience for music like this. Blessings!

This interpretation is gorgeous. The phrasing and rubato are just perfect, and the calm middle part contrasts the lamenting theme so wonderfully.
