David did what he set out to do; the dreams he took upon along the way, he made them come true. Got to the top of Arasaka Tower like his mom wanted; became an NC legend like Maine wanted; got Lucy to the moon like she wanted.
But if you were to ask any of them if they were happy with the way David went about it, none of them would say yes. Especially Lucy. Her dream wasn’t the moon at that point; she just wanted David to live.
I think it goes really well with the fact that David himself never had any dreams or ambitions, he just did what every one else wanted.
It's funny, the game ends a similar way in many of the endings, with all of your people and loved ones telling you via holocall how they wish you didn't do what you did, or how they're angry with your final decision... No happy endings.

The song really sums up the tragedy of cyberpunk settings. Capitalism run amok forces people to literally turn themselves into a machine, to integrate products into themselves, and commodify themselves either as wageslaves or mercenaries. When, undisturbed, people really want nothing more to be around the people they care about. We make life complex and alienating in the chase for profit margins.

Season 2 in my mind is the game Cyberpunk 2077. It takes place roughly a year after Edgerunners but features different characters.

They told the street-kid story. It'd be cool if they told a nomad story or a corpo story. Could even have happened at the same time as David's story.

@@ThiefGameingVideos from what I understood, what they meant was they wouldn't follow any characters from part 1, like Lucy or Falco. So if another season occurs, it wouldn't have anything to do with them.
So in the game, there's a drink named after David at a certain bar. The only way to get a drink named after you is when you go out in a blaze of glory. It's sad but alas, David's fate was set in stone.

@@thedarkstarr11 Something interesting about the nature of the David Martinez that I've seen, is that it's made with NiCola, a Japanese soda brand, and Polish vodka. Lucy's canonical heritage is half-Japanese, half-Polish.

Rebecca's death was so random and violent. I appreciate the strong reaction to it as it makes me feel not so alone. Because I reacted the same. She was the best💙❤️
There's a popular fan theory (which i like to believe) - That Lucy was one of the key reasons why David could handle so much cyberware. Like she was the humanity in his life that he only really carried on living for. David was special, but when they started becoming distanced and Lucy isolated herself, being less present in his life, David started becoming less human literally and figuratively, and started suffering the effects of psychosis. But here when they reunite, Lucy snaps him back from the edge. Who knows if they both survived maybe David would have had that chance to get normal again. Pretty tragic :')
A big reason for that theory stems from the mechanic of cyberpsychosis in the OG games: that when your empathy drops too low, you slip into psychosis. Those with higher empathy, and ways to remind themselves of their empathy, have a higher tolerance for cyberware. So this definitely makes sense that Lucy, and the gang as a whole helped David: because he found a family to belong to, and to devote himself to.
Isn't it confirmed by the creator of the table top game that cyber psychosis can be treated with regular therapy?
Its not quite regular therapy but yeah, you treat your cyberpsychosis with therapy in the game, but its only temporary. You cannot ever fully recover the humanity (the stat that tracks when you become a cyberpsycho) as long as you have cyberware, and the more cyberware you have, the lower your permanent humanity goes until you remove cyberware.
So therapy helps you treat your psychosis but the more cyberware you have, the less effective it is. The system is actually in the game to PREVENT people from basically becoming gods with cyberware.
Here's Mike Pondsmith's take in his own words:-
Okay, so time to (partially) explain CYBERPSYCHOSIS.
First of all, Cyberpsychosis is a disorder that in part depends on the subject's overall internal susceptibility. Just like every person who drinks a lot at parties doesn't end up an alcoholic in the gutter, not everyone who gets loaded up on cyberware is going to automatically go cyberpsycho. You have to have an inherent susceptibility, which (in the TRPG) is represented by the player's Humanity Stat. Humanity is not just a measure of one aspect of personality, but an overall measure of several elements including the subject's ability to emphasize and relate with others, their ability to absorb and rebound from mental and physical stressors, their ability to show compassion and flexibility to others, and whether they are able to balance their worldview through other methods.
So, in some ways, I tend to treat cyberware as an addiction--heavy anabolic steroid use being my favorite model. Not everyone who juices ends up crazy mad with roid rage. But those who are more susceptible to the need to take more steroids are more likely to hit a point where they do flip into roid rage. (Take a look at this article from Livescience www.livescience.com/38354-what-is-roid-rage.html for a pretty good idea of how roid rage works--notice that it's got the same basic profile as cyberpsychosis).
David's starting Humanity was probably already pretty high. And before things went to crap, he had a loving mother, a career path, and no more hassle than the average poor guy in a wealthy Ivy League school. So he had lots of buffer. But even so, he still, even after losing all that, was able to make friends, build a replacement family, and (after some prompting) even get a girlfriend. And a mentor (Maine) to create a supportive father figure. So he could definitely handle the stress of added cyberware up to a point.
Most people in Night City don't have the level of Humanity to pull this kind of stunt off without going cyberpsychotic. So David is one in a million. And that's why Arasaka wants him.

Smasher...he's been around for years. Killed Johnny Silverhand (Keanu Reeves). Fought Morgan Blackhand. Canonically, he's only lost TWICE. Killed NUMEROUS Edgerunners. You see Smasher...you run or die. He's basically a Robo Grim Reaper. Sometimes...both. Loved this series. They said Season 2 is a no go...but Studio Trigger would like to work with CDPR again. Maybe a different crew?
Well CDPR and Trigger are now in actual contractual negotiations rumor is that Trigger met with Keanu and they wanna do a Silverhand story or use him in some capacity with a more Cyberpunk 2020 vibe then 2077.
The second he appeared, I knew it was gonna end bad since smasher is in the game, alive and well.
Apparently Smasher was created as a GM tool, to police PCs and keep them from breaking scenarios lol

David and Becca died defending the people they loved, closest we'll ever get to a happy ending in Night City
...Falco was around since before Maine died. He just didn't talk much lolz.
And that is the life of a street kid in Night City, also did you know? Doc said after the last immunoblocker, David should go full cyberphyscho but Lucy's kiss managed to suppress him for a little bit, Lucy was David's last medicine.
That's the cruel thing. Immunosuppressants are the short term, stop gap measure used to fend off Cyberpsychosis, but you know what the actual cure is? Human connection. It's why it's so much easier to kill a Cyberpsycho than treat them, why David, who had strong connections to his mum, the Edgerunners, and to Lucy was so resilient to all his chrome, and why Night City produces so many of them. That place is anathema to forming human connections.
@@Zombiewithabowtie Yup, and its also a good explanation for Adam Smasher's ability to be the most immune to it. Because he represents the absence of a human connection. You can't go cyber-psycho if you never had any humanity to lose in the first place.
Well, Mike Pondsmith once said that the cure for the cyberpsycho is love, connections with dear people and sincerely feelings towards them
He really loved Lucy and his love suppressed his cyberpsycho and he had chance to survive if he deinstalled mostly of his chromes

As the show progressed, David became Lucy's "Moon". Most of the times (if not all) when Lucy and David are depicted having a loving moment, there's the moon behind them in the same scene. He spent all his time chasing others' dreams, even Lucy's dream to visit the actual moon, without realizing that he already had become everything that Lucy wanted in her life.
if you remember in episode 4 when they first kissed and they showed both of them on the moon. That moment was when they were already there metaphorically.
The end of Edgerunners happens about a year or so before the start of the game. There's a little sidequest where Falco text messages your character "V" and you can find out a little more on the Edgerunners crew after that.
I mean you don't find out much about the rest of the crew. Falco literally just gives you David's jacket and tells you to leave it alone.
Cyberpunk as a rule is about tragedy. I heard someone say once that it's not Cyberpunk if there are a lot of happy endings.
That's the thing about cyberpunk it's not about saving everyone it's about saving yourself

"Yo what the fuck?" is the perfect summation of the ending of that series lol. Personally I found it to be an incredible ride of an anime. Not saying it is as good as Cowboy Bebop, but I think it's gonna be kind of like Bebop in that over the next decade or so people are going to discover it and it will slowly become a legendary anime.
For me this anime isn't meant to have a happy ending. The important part isn't really who lives and who dies, it's how a group of people in a world that is trying to literally and figuratively turn them into machines for profit try to hold onto their humanity and the bonds between them.
David had a truly sad life. He lived his life for others. He didn't have his own dreams. First he persued his mothers dreams, after his mom died Maine took her place and he followed Maine's dream. And in the end he died to save Lucy. David Martines lived his life for other and died for other. Depressing...
Living your life for others and dying for others is the very definition of heroism.
Dani’s “yo wtf” was so relatable
In the game Cyberpunk 2077, there is a bar called the Afterlife. One of the traditions at that bar is that a lot of the drinks are named after people who died in a spectacular way. Ever since the game came out (long before the anime did) there was a drink called "David Martinez" and we only now know why he deserved the spot.
Smasher was a soldier in like 4 corporative wars ( if am not wrong) . Smasher was a merc from 2000-s and he was a borg from 2010 in cyberpunk world , David died in 2076 like half a year before the story of the game, that was a damn surprise that some V killed that monster
I guess the only moment you could say was genuinely heart warming was when David and Lucy were falling in love and promising each other to make it out alive.
David and Lucy did the improbable; one of them got out of the life. Beautiful tragedy.

Just for Context there is a way to Cure Cyberpsychosis.
Mike Pondsmith, the guy who created Cyberpunk has said that cyberpsychosis can be cured by love.
It's Human connection that helps a person recover from it and love is the strongest form of connection.
That is why David is this resistant, his Love for Lucy litteraly keeps him sane.
David died a true night city legend and yeah it probably isn’t what his mom wanted but being a Corpo is also terrible in this world they’re horrible people he took a fight to Araska tower and fought with smasher night city doesn’t have happy ending but he did become a legend he’s even got a drink named after him but I do wish him and Lucy got to live together😢She was able to bring him back from cyberphyscosis and the song😭I loved this show so much!!

Adam Smasher doesn't give a damn about who the main characters were. He showed up in the last episode and caused chaos. I think the only way they will do a season 2 is if they tell a new story with different characters, because David is definitely dead.
There are other legends in NC, maybe an anthology of sorts? Each season is a new legend?

Freaking Adam Smasher, yeah there was no way David was going to win against that guy, haven't played the Cyberpunk game but Adams one of the main villains within the story. Yup David stood no chance unfortunately and I don't think we're getting season 2, no happy endings in Night City😭

The line Smasher said to David at the end "You'd make an interesting construct" would make sense if you played the game. Arasaka has a special technology to store people's digital being on a chip, almost like their soul. The game revolves around this where Keanu Reeves's character is a construct and is connected to you

And in a lot of table top campaigns as well. Usually comes out when players get too uppity. Or when the GM is feeling sadistic.
@@thedarkstarr11 in the first session where I was GM it was kind of an alternate take on the bombing of arasaka tower. Adam smasher appeared at the last moment and was about to kill all my friends but they were actually able to set off the nuclear bomb and get out on an AV just in time. It was intense af. Still my favorite campaign I've ever ran. It was in 2019 so at the peak of our excitement for 2077. More people should play the table top imo
@@thedarkstarr11 So as a GM for many years for Cyberpunk I can tell you sometimes the players think they are more bad ass then they are and think they can pick a fight with Smasher I can tell you from experience in all of my campaigns where smasher comes out its resulted in a TPK or near TPK and they flee to maybe try some other time and only a handful of times has the players actually succeeded on beating him
I GM'd a campaign of Cyberpunk for some friends of mine who wanted to get into the setting after 2077 came out. They only knew Smasher from the game and wanted to eventually fight him.
They got their wish, and they learned very quickly that Tabletop Smasher is far different than 2077 Smasher.

Nah, Lucy (and his relationship with her) enhanced what he already had. But he had it to begin with.
Before meeting Lucy (or rather, just after meeting her, so he wouldn't have many feelings for her at that point) everyone was astonished that not only he had been able to activate his sandevistan 10 times in less than a day without losing it, but also coming nowhere close to do so. His limit at that stage was his body, not his mind, something nobody could believe.
Heck, his ripperdoc was pretty sure his mind would pop just with one use...he went on to use it 10 times in a day and not even noticing anything wrong in his mind. Though his body was pretty much messed up.
So David was definitely special on his own to begin with.

You could tell it would have a sad ending as anyone of note seems to only be famous through death .
Cyberpunk is a dystopian genre, so there was never gonna be a happy ending tbf.
For context, kiwi did what she did because she found out what went down in episode 6 was because of Lucy. Lucy is what got maxxtac called and Lucy was the one who fried the guy to hide her boys secret. So in her eyes Lucy killed her old crew and couldn't be trusted. So kiwi went back to her old ways.
If David and Lucys story makes you sad then go heal your soul with V and Panams love story. Hands down one of the best parts in all of Cyberpunk 2077.
I play the game, trust me there’s no good ending. Even that Panam ending (which is my ending in the game) was bitter sweet, like what happens in the dlc? Cause I feel like V or Johnny will die. Or both..
@@darells.illustrisimo467 DLC is set during the main plot. Its an extended series of side-missions. The only thing its been confirmed to do is unlock an entirely new ending.
Panams ending is the most hopeful. Misty seems to think so especially and shes right about everything. She seems to think V will live for some time with Panam and the Nomads. A cure isnt certain but a good end to life is however long it might be.
Also remember Alt CANNOT be trusted. Its entirelt within reason she was lying or exagerrating because she either wanted Johnny to live in Vs body or perhaps didnt want to take him along to whatever thing she has planned beyond the Blackwall which doubtless isnt good. Remember all the minds trapped in Mikoshi from Soulkiller arent freed. Alt takes them to use for her own ends.
The claim that Alts prognosis on V can be trusted is dubious, just like it is with Arasaka. Im not saying V isnt dying - he got shot in the head and had invasive technology trying to take over. But the suggestion its only a few months or that tech cant help is ridiculous. I dont know if CDPR forgot but some people in 2077 can actually have synthetic brains. Everyone sees it - headshot the right enemy npc and their skull opens up to white milky blood and white synthetic brain tissue.
I just love the fact that David Martinez succeeded where Johnny Silverhand failed. He saved his lover from Arasaka. Cause you best believe Lucy would've shared the same grim fate as Alt Cunningham. P.S If you've played the game you know what I'm talking about.

Yeah, The Edgerunners story is a very tragic one. The pure makeshift group was somewhat doomed to fail from the beginning. The ending was just heart crushing, so bittersweet.

In case you didn’t know, Cyber Punk Edgerunners is a prequel to the game CyberPunk 2077, they made it an anime show for a Netflix series. And I suggest you play the game if you want to get revenge for David lol
There was never going to be a happily ever after for the Edgerunners. Mike Pondsmith, the creator of the tabletop RPG that served as the basis for the video game and this series, said it himself: "Cyberpunk isn't about saving the world. It's about saving yourself." And when it comes to Night City, no one can ever save themselves, not without sacrifices.

While this is the canon way this ends in this show, I personally subscribe to the idea that there is a “better ending” and happily think of it.
Regardless of the very sad ending, it’s a beautifully morose story.

This one was rough. I ended up binging this entire show one Friday night only to feel like crap physically and emotionally at 7am 💔. That song will always bring pain now lol
My theory is that Adam smasher was David’s real father. David’s mom was an edge runner , David’s was special in order to take cyber wear like he did. Final fight scene they both said they were special, and what a better ending fight scene then father and son both tolerate to crome and not knowing he was his father and David was his son and the mother didn’t want him to know about his father. 🤯

Sad fact: The founder of night city tried to create it as a sanctuary since the rest of the world was so messed up but in the midst of construction, he himself got killed.
Did anyone fill them in on how Night city is supposed to be like that and how many of the questions they have are found in the game as well as the music?

The first comment after it's finished ( 17:12 ) summarize really good the Cyberpunk genre: a sad story which the lives of your loved characters don't matter for this world.
Again new to the crew but so enjoy the Gem Pact react videos. One, Morgan is the one with emotions on arm. She hides nothing. Sami is careful and controlled. She is always thinking and playing deep layer mental chess. Dani is the ninja of the crew. She says little but is alway watching like a hawk.
Y'all gotta do a playthrough of the game now!
I know you probably won't see this but the overall message of this Cyberpunk world but even more specifically Night City. No one ever wins. The corporations are the ones who are always on top. Johnny Silverhand (character from the video & board game) blew up Arasaka tower in 2023 & died doing it but 50 years later the tower was remade showing that really Johnny died for nothing, Arasaka still had plenty of power, the corpos still controlled everything. You can try to work your way up for power, similar to Davids crew but none of them won. Lucy lived but she didn't win. She went to the Moon after losing everyone & everything.
Dystopia and getting eaten and churned out by the system are hallmarks of the cyberpunk genre which was an offshoot of the noir genre which also share a cynic and nihilist world view.
Season 2 is the game basically, this show is more of a prequel that happens right before V (the main character of the game) becomes a merc

I always took that shot of Becca to be Trigger's way of shining a mirror on the viewer. For a lot of people the bad guys' gorey deaths were hype moments, and not pulling the punch on Becca's body is their way of saying "everyone in Night City is a victim of Night City", showing how they're all the same and struggling the same.
RIP Becca and David.
This show is a Tragedy. I absolutely love it.
The girl in the middle head the nail on the head. The creature of cyberpunk, mike p, said that the theme is survival of ones self. There is no goal per se. A commentary about what America is becoming?

Maybe it’s because i watched story back then in quite mixed emotional state, but it hit like damn truck. Expected, considering genre and setup, but still, like damn truck full of emotional damage.
There can be more seasons. I'm sure there are more stories to tell in the world of Cyberpunk. David's gang was just one of many in Night City. I'd like to see more.
you dont become a ledgend by how you live, you become a ledgend by how you die. when adam smasher says you would be an intresting construck thats a refrance to the game, built upon life after death, which brings me to the bar they drink at, called the afterlife. in the game you can get a drink called the david martinez, memorial drink of davids death.
Adam Smasher is an old Night City legend dating back to the 2020s, 98% cybernetics, an absolute nightmare of a man, and completely unaffected by cyberpsychosis.

Playing cyberpunk 2077 after watching the series feels so much better since we get revenge for David.
According to Cyberpunk lore and rules, Lucy should've been able to at the very least stall Smasher for a minute. He's vulnerable to hacking and Lucy has tackled and survived multiple rogue AI from beyond the Blackwall (those mofos make Smasher look like an year old Jack Russell Terrier).
If it makes you feel any better the main character from the cyberpunk game, V absolutely annihilates Adam Smasher
More than that, according to the game stats, ever since Edgerunners came out a huge number of players have been going after Adam Smasher with Rebecca's gun, while wearing David's jacket.

22:24 no, only david and rebecca got the goal. David’s was to send lucy moon as he promised in ep4. Lucy’s goal changed at ep4 she was to keep david alive. So imagine her depression after all this. 😢
But at least they died like true edge runners and became part of the legends

But at the end of it all, they are just one of many trying to leave that one mark in our world by any means possible. But alas, in night city, there is no such thing as a good ending.
Also in the game there’s this thing were you get a drink named after you if you die, so I doubt David will come back as he has a drink named after him
