Bernard Klein The link I provided to Immortal Songs shows her sing older Korean pop songs from 25+ years ago. But she was trained as a traditional Korean singer (gugak minyo). It’s not pansori, tho. The gugak style of singing is completely different than western singing. If you put her next to a pop singer side by side, her voice would project much more (literally louder and clearer) due her extraordinary breath control required to sing gugak minyo. Have you noticed that you can’t hear her breathing when she sings? It’s like she never takes a breath in between notes.

Arirang is a traditional Korean folk song that possibly originated as a song expressing sorrow between two lovers. It also became a resistance anthem during the Japanese occupation in the early 1900s. It was sung by the people to help strengthen and unify the nation during that time. Today, it is considered the unofficial national anthem. That's one of the reasons why she sort of encouraged the audience gesturing them to sing along with her during certain parts of the song.

OMG~!! At first you hear to her celine song and immediately listen to "Arirang Alone". Its a shock to me too. Hahha Xd
The lyrics contain the hearts of Koreans who live in South & North Korea apart from each other but who always wish for unification.
The water of Mt.Baekdu(The northernmost in North Korea) and the water of Mt.Halla(The southernmost in South Korea) flows to Dokdo(An island alone at the eastern end of the East Sea, the first place in the Korean peninsula where the sun rises) finally meet together. And Let's meet the sunrise together(unified Korean peninsula).

This song is considered to be the unofficial national anthem of Korea there are 3,600 variations of 60 different versions. This song is estimated to be 600 years old and is part of UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage. No one does Arirang or Arirang Alone like Sohyang. Also there is no singer in the west or Asia who is a better interpreter or performer than Sohyang, she is a Leyend but she is a singer for God and a debout Christian.

If I’m not mistaken, SO HYANG was diagnosed with cancer…after surviving the ordeal she saw her second chance at life as a gift from God and dedicated her voice/life to brining joy to others…she is a gospel singer who grew up singing in church and she rejected international fame choosing instead to sing only for Jesus and to raise money for charity. This is why I believe we feel so much from her singing...its from above and real.

From what I understand, this is The Unofficial anthem for South Korea. It is the name of a hill which is actually pronounced Adidang as you heard her singing.
And from what I understand, it has to do with going over the hill to bring North Korea and South Korea together as one free Nation. Like I said, that's the way I understand it. But that would tell you why there seems to be so much Unity and enthusiasm when she sings this song.

I LOVE YOU! American mom. In this video I think you should have mentoined in the start the importance of this song. If you dont know, let me fill you in. It is the unification song. The dream of a reunion of the Korean island. Many familys were just ripped apart never to see eachother again. The punishment for trying to flee from the diktatorship in the north to the free south is death. Even talking about the outside world could mean a lifetime in slavecamps. Not only for the acused but for the hole family. Most people in south and north is suffering from the loss of their loved ones. The song is baned (of course) in the north. I think you can tell on So Hyang that she means every word. Hope you can oversee my spelling. Im from Sweden. Love you!
