This is a very interesting topic and I was actually thinking about it lately. However I still have two problems, one is that I feel like in a lot of communities have a lot of kids in them, which oc it's great that they wanna pick it up but they can't give good criticism and sometimes they are just flooding the space. And the second one is - and maybe I just didn't get it - but as far as I got it you just say that to find one, you have to find the right fit and you need to know what you want to do and then you go over the advantages again. So it kinda doesn't explain how to actually find the right art community xD Sorry if that's just me.
Thanks for dropping me a line Emagine - I hear what you say about the kids, but some of those kids can also be extremely dedicated! I think when it comes to communities you can start to segment it out by: Main Software / Medium (Photoshop, Oil Painting etc) Topic (eg comics, animation etc) Industry (eg video games, visual effects) Type of community (forum, chatroom etc) Also try to guage the intent of the group - does it feel pro? Are there pros there? Thankfully when it comes to art it's pretty quick and easy to see the quality of the art work and make a judgement call on this right away. There's no silver bullet that I can hand you, and as an artist it's often that there's no 'right' answer - you just have to dive into things, learn on the fly, and figure it out as you go. Good luck!
Thanks for sharing! I've been looking for a good critique community but it's been interesting to find the right platform - I feel like Instagram is overwhelmingly empty praise so I've been seeking discord servers that some of my favorite illustrators on youtube have started. Been exploring reddit a bit too but I haven't landed on a group that I'm consistently talking and connecting with about work in progress. I'm sure it just takes time to build :)
I’m in several art communities, groups, and servers, and the main drag I experience is that there’s too many people and conversations going on that I just don’t know where to jump in after making my introduction to the group. I’m an introvert so maybe that’s why I have a hard time jumping into the convos, but I also observe a lot of regulars having convos on topics I know nothing about, like a tv show they really like. While this is great for them, I still feel at a loss. Another thing is, to ditto the last commenter, that it seems a lot of groups are flooded by kids or fans of art and not artists or pros themselves. I’ve joined a couple groups because the creator of the group is a comic creator like I hope to be, and I was hoping to find like-minded people, but it seems these groups are more of a fan base for the comic than a place where fellow artists meet. Perhaps I need to look harder? Or interact more? Or create my own group entirely? Which if I’m honest seems like a bad idea because I don’t know how an introverted artist like me would get the word out about a new comics-focused art community. Sorry for the partial ramble but I would like to know your thoughts if you have the time.
Unfortunately, there seems to be so much fake AI art around nowadays on so many platforms that it is getting increasingly harder to find other real artists.
