The wheels retract for the train tracks and once nearing the roadway again the wheels retract upwards so that the truck can be driven on the road again.

what does a full sized locomotive have to do with anything? Maybe it is a few times to 50x the weight, maybe you have an empty car that is only twice the weight. A compressed object that does not release pressure to the side will eventually become incompressible

Back in the mid 60's we used to put pennies on the cable car tracks in San Francisco. We also used to put rolls of paper cap gun caps on the tracks. It was best to put them on the outer edge or you couldn't hardly hear them go off.
Usually the vibration will bounce the coins off the track before the wheels smash them. Or they get lost in the rocks. Try taping them down if you want. Red duck tape will make it easier to find them.
