    • @pheenmachine

      It dances between both very gracefully. I think most Marvel adaptations that have been successful found a way to tone that line. Daredevil works well with crime procedural elements, making the Ant Man films more like heist movies helped give them a unique voice and charm as well.

    This really is one of the top MCU films, it combined a superhero movie with a James Bond flick. Captain America turned out to have the strongest trilogy in the MCU, in my opinion. Also, the light bulb, motion picture cameras, submarines, color TV, the solar cell, baseball, ice cream cones, cell phones, air conditioning, the vacuum cleaner, and M&Ms were all invented here. • @tarmaque
      @tarmaque 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@Logan_Baron Yup. You'll even notice that Cap switches to Savate to fight him "fairly." And fairly kicks his French butt. Having been in WWII Steve would probably have been introduced to Savate, since many US soldiers were. Canonically Steve is expert in just about every kind of martial art known, without being a master of any of them. Hence Shang-Chi is a master of Kung-fu and could beat Cap in that one area, but Steve knows other kinds of martial arts and can switch it up. If they were restricted to la Savate then Cap would almost certainly beat Shang-Chi.
      That said, Shang-Chi was primarily based on Bruce Lee, who's philosophy of fighting is much like Cap's: Be like water, change to meet circumstances, depend on no style because that limits you, use whatever form you need at the moment. This is also very similar to thoughts in Musashi's _The Book of Five Rings_ where he recommends you be able to strike from any position, and follow no master's teachings blindly. Therefore my example may not be fully cogent.

You could see the threads coming together, the crossover and rewards for the fans who are sticking it out. Yeah the MCU is still good, but you can see the shared universe coming now, but back then when it was just starting, such an exciting time to be a Marvel comics fan, and seeing the stuff you used to read back in middle school, highschool, college hell as an adult, being translated to the big screen so successfully. There is a heartwrenching thing in how precise a casting choice Robert Redford was for Pierce, the mind wipe process they use was clearly not perfect, so they assigned someone as his handler that looked a good deal like Steve. When he was young he was just as blonde, blue-eyed, and strong-jawed as Steve is, and it could be used as a lever to make Bucky more likely to trust him. It probably kept him a lot calmer than he would have otherwise been as well.

This is also the best movie for Black Widow, which is a bit of a shame in a way. That they never greenlit a solo film for her right after this (and _Lucy_ which showed Scarjo had the star power to put butts in theatre seats) is still one of the biggest missteps of the MCU. I'm not 100% sure but I always assumed that the Winter Soldier was a play on themes often found in old Russian and Soviet iconography and culture. For example the Winter Palace which was the royal residence of the Russian tsars in St Petersburg. Or the Winter War which the USSR fought against Finland. In the original comics Captain America was the super soldier that was the symbol of everything American, starting in the 1940s. But after WW2 came the Cold War where America was pitted against the Soviet Union, and Bucky was Cap's kid sidekick (like Robin to Batman), who eventually got captured and brainwashed and turned into the Winter Soldier. Hydra was like the comic book stand-in for the Nazis at first and later the Soviets.. so.. Bucky at first was like the anti-Captain America. Symbol of Soviet empire. The Winter Soldier.

    When this movie first came out in theaters, Hail HYDRA was trending everywhere. First job I had in high school, my friends and I worked at a car wash. One car we detailed was a Rolls Royce, and its hood ornament was the HYDRA symbol. We kinda geeked out a little because the movie had just released and we talked about seeing it after work. So we all kinda got in the mood, starting telling each other, "Hail HYDRA." What we did not expect was for the car's owner and side passenger to come up behind us and shout "HAIL HYDRA!"
    It even spread in school. You return a book to the librarian, "Hail HYDRA." You clap a friend on the back for scoring a point on the field, "Hail HYDRA." You hug your girlfriend or boyfriend in the hallway, "Hail HYDRA." Even passing notes in class; I wrote to someone who wanted to copy my answers, "HAIL HYDRA."

    • @tarmaque
      @tarmaque 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is indeed Savate, which does not have any accents. Sometimes "Savate-boxe française" or "la Savate." The word means "old shoe" or "boot." In it as a sport where kick points are only scored by strikes with the foot, not the shins or knees. "Savate-boxe française" literally means "French shoe boxing." It can and often does include strikes with the hand, but is primarily a kickboxing style. When Batroc confronts Steve as "I thought you were more than just a shield" he replies by switching to Savate and kicking Batroc's butt.

    Okay, so Zola revealed that Hydra hidden within Shield has been manipulating things and causing “accidents” such as _the death of Tony’s parents._ Steve is aware that Hydra got Tony’s parents killed. Remember that.

    18:49 This is kind of a strange thing, but I guess it makes sense that the shield is big and bright, so it makes an obvious target, as opposed to the dark colors of Cap’s outfit extremities. There’s a Batman comic where he takes a shot to the chest, right on the Bat logo, and there’s armor plating underneath it. He thinks to himself (monologuing to the reader) that of course that’s why he put a target on his chest - he can’t armor his head.

I don't know if reactions would get worthwhile view numbers, but you would enjoy the series, and if reacting doesn't work out you could always binge it off camera, although there could be minor spoilers/refences if you watch, say, all of the first two seasons before Age of Ultron... I am glad that you liked this. If you want more, since Iron Man 3 you are able to watch Agents of SHIELD [7 seasons, 136 episodes] and Agent Carter [ 2 seasons, 18 episodes] for more of the world at large for SHIELD & the SSR (for Peggy Carter and the foundations of SHIELD). Agent Carter season 1 before Endgame. AOS runs parallel in canon from Seasons 1-5, 6 & 7 did not have any theater releases to connect to but still bring you Marvel before the Disney+ era begins.
    If you want, you can do a prologue episode before watching a season, and an epilogue episode to soak it all in. Make your predictions, remark on the experience. That would give a top number of 150 episodes for AOS, and 22 for Agent Carter. You could make all the episodes available on Patreon, and use your prologues and epilogues on TH-cam.
    If you end up with delays due to vacations, sick time, or other complications, then you'd be able to release the individual episodes. Win/Win, right?

    There are real problems with using the name "Winter Soldier " for this character. The phrase comes from Thomas Paine, who wrote a pamphlet to be read to Washington's troops at Valley Forge:"These are the times that try men's souls. The Summer Soldier, and the Sunshine Patriot, will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country. But he that perseveres it now, deserves the thanks and praise of man and woman. " The title "The Winter Soldier Hearings" was used by the Vietnam Veterans Against the War, who held public hearings in which hundreds of veterans testified to war crimes they saw committed by the US in the War." They held a march un which thousands threw the metals they had been awarded in the War over a fence onto the grounds of the Capitol building. So using it for a programmed assassin is really not app, and is the worst thing in an otherwise really good movie, whose message is arguably, at least in the case of Captain America, closer to both Tom Paine and to the Vietnam Veterans Against the War.

    • @leroy1154

      Not really. It's only a problem if you only think of Hydra as the "Haha we're evil because we love being bad!" less then 2D type of villains, but they're not. Sure Hyrda is evil, because they do evil things, but Hydra believe themselves to be the good guys. They think they're saving the world and that they're the ones making the hard choices and sacrifices to do so. Look at a lot of what Pierce says, specifically look at the scene with his house keeper; it's clear he doesn't want to kill her, but he believes that he has to so, so he does it.

    • @pimtooler6370
      @pimtooler6370 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sure the character is an assassin, but the name fit with the message of the movie. Though I do think the whole SHIELD is innocent and Hydra secretly infiltrated behind the scenes is a bit of a cop out if we're talking about the US military industrial complex and their war crimes. But hey, its a marvel movie.
