great info. One point: you took 1/10 of an inch off the bottom of the saddle. .100 is 1/10 of an inch. .01 is one hundreth of an inch, and One thousand of an inch is .001
100 thousandths is a lot to take off a factory saddle on the first adjustment. Maybe the humidity is high there right now. Both my new D28 and new OOO I got in 2020 (in the factory sealed box) only needed 20 thousandths off the factory saddle to bring them to 90 on the bass side (which is a modern low action I prefer). But I adjusted those guitars in March when the humidity was low. I wonder how much room there is in the future to lower that saddle on the guitar in the video? If it needs a neck reset in the first 10 years I would assume that would be a warrantied repair that Martin would do.
Around $3000 +/-$300 for these guitars brand new... it's crazy that you had to take a solid chunk off the bottom of the saddle. Besides adjusting the truss rod and tuning the strings, guitars at that price point should be stage ready.
@@gryzew they do this because everyone plays different. I cannot play with my action as low as he’s adjusting it to. I’ll make it buzz because I play heavy handed and use heavier picks. You can always adjust down, but adjusting up takes a lot more work.
Awesome video as usual Caleb! When you were measuring the first fret action with the pick I like how you tell us the thickness (.010) of the pick so we know what the measurement is. It helps when we know what the actual measurement is. Keep up the great work and thanks for sharing 👍
They usually keep that rosewood smell Bud. Especially if you keep them in their cases, when not being played. It makes opening the lid to the case, a joyable occasion everytime. My 2010 D-28 has just as strong rosewood scent inside, as it did the day I bought it new. Good video Brother.
Caleb Did the owner provide you with a new bone saddle to customize the string action and keep the original saddle untouched? Is that why the action was so incredibly high? Great video on an excellent guitar.
Cool video thanks for sharing. The neck on the D-28 seems to be shorter than it should be. You may want to measure that neck. See how long it is from the body of the guitar up to the nut. ( I hope I'm wrong. ) Stay well & safe.
I bought a "brand new" D-28 to a luthier to have a set-up done...he took one look at it, grimaced, and said "This is not a Martin set-up...someone has worked on this..." (my heart sank) I assured him that it was brand new out of the box and no one has worked on it...and he assured me that someone had certainly goofed around on it. He asked where I bought it...I said "Guitar Center" He asked "Did you open the box?" I said "No...they pulled it out of the factory box and I opened the case" He then went on to tell me how most likely someone at Guitar Center opened it and lowered the action...horribly...and that this was a common practice. I was shocked. Anyhow, I got it back today...and holy #$%^ it plays and sounds like a dream...
Hello there. Bought a HD28 today in Holland. (TFOA) -A used one from 2022. Nothing changed since 2022 on the HD28 correct? Should be same as the 2024/2025?
Well Martin guitars do have an issue with the binding coming loose at the waist. They use acetone to put on the binding, so I think if it shrinks a little, it pulls loose. They need to go to a good glue for the binding.
You showed the string height and how much you needed to take off at the bridge. Maybe a good idea would have been to show again the new string height after you lowered the bridge. It kind of complets that part of the set up.
Wow.. For what that guitar costs, brand new, it should have been way better than it was. You did a great job setting it up. But again, at about $3,000.00 (depending on where you purchased it), the setup shouldn't have been off that much. My Recording King RD-328 (which is an all solid wood (Adirondacks spruce top and East Indian Rosewood back and sides), was set up ready to play.
It's about protection of luthiers, and certified techs, making money! Not about consumer satisfaction..so martin needs the Q.C.to be repaired ! Never again...had to have a neck reset in 2 yrs after purchase! Why ? Booo
I couldn't agree more. Again, for what these guitars cost, the quality should be way above any Chinese or other mass produced guitar. I still would love to have my own D28 but at the price/premium they are asking, that will never be.
I've made several videos on my Recording King RD-328 and after a year and a half it just keeps sounding better each time I play it. I love that guitar.
I respectfully disagree with your comment. I feel that Caleb is very informative/accurate whenever he’s describing a process. Caleb is doing us a service when he is explaining the fine intricacies of guitar repair. Take care.

Wo! Caleb finally gets to work on a NEW instrument. Good job!
I like the way you explained the reason why you put the capo at the first fret. I've wondered about that for awhile. You did a great job on the setup.
Neat trick, Caleb at 1:26. Three hands??? Jerry Rosa always says he could use another hand. Can you tell him your trick? ;)
I was thinking the exact same thing. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

I have the same guitar and it’s 2 years old and it still smells like rosewood
Nice one Caleb. All the best mate from England

Great job Caleb. I would have taken that guitar back though, neck angle seems off. Too expensive to let that pass.
Good tips, Caleb. Thanks.

Nice job as usual! Love your videos Caleb
Like how you go aboutt this and very thorough explanation.
Thanks Caleb great video 🇬🇧
G'day lad . Oz is watching . Peace ✌

No, that was the original saddle as far as I know.
Wow that is exactly what I do. That way if you screw up, you can put the original back on.
Nice job Caleb!
This is a by the book set up my friend...

Caleb, do new martin guitars have a slight belly or are they flat ?

The binding wasn't falling off yet? 😆

Sounds good for a martin..lol I'm not a martin fan tho.

It's still a mass produced product, and QC is an expensive part of the process.
