Ah... you mentioning (from the article), Bleeker and MacDougal brings back memories. She'd just gotten started, with this song released on radio. I had this album (on a cassette tape) and listened to it almost endlessly. As I mentioned on a comment on your other video about one of her songs, I saw her play in a small cafe / venue on MacDougal. It was just her playing - with only an acoustic guitar. Absolutely mesmerizing. She's got such a clear, beautiful voice.

Marlene On The Wall is not just about loneliness. Vega is able to get across in 3+ minutes that Marlene's confidence and ability to remain unbent by men's wills is the key to building your own inner strength. This song has been an absolute favorite since the album was released. I got to see her at the Troubadour (I think) just after the album came out. There was a line to greet her afterward & I was that dork who thought 'Cool, there is a line to meet her' and had nothing of value to offer, except... "Your music is great."

God. Forty fucking years ago. Talk about changing. It feels familiar and completely foreign at once. Who says time travel doesn’t exist?

I've always assumed she means a poster of Marlene Dietrich, hence also that particular, German pronunciation 🙂
    Great song indeed!
    🤩👍

Ooh I love a bit of Suzanne Vega. Hey, I thought you’d gone from TH-cam. You don’t appear in my feed anymore . I just looked up your page so I could rewatch the Kate Bush album reviews and see all this new stuff. I got some catching up to do! 😅

I had helped a young German singer-songwriter with arranging and recording one of her originals 7 years or so ago, and her name actually is also Marlene! 😀 Same pronunciation, too! 😀

Great song and recording. This is my idea of good, modern folk music. Reminds me a bit of Shawn Colvin and Jonatha Brooke (The Story). If I didn't know better I would have guessed this was from the early 90's. For some reason her delivery style doesn't bug me here, probably because she does modulate the intensity in an interesting way.

Vega's version of spoken word is brilliant. Anyway, more important things, 9M views! well done, and well deserved. It was Rush that did it 😂, only joking, as a 60 year old guitarist why do I watch a bass player react to shit. I know because your f...in awsome. 🤘🤘🤘🤘👍❤

Sounds like the bass may actually be played with a pick!? 🙂

She is one of the most underrated artists, and i blame the radios, as they kept playing her worst recording, the acapella one, the only one i hate.
