Stupid-est tournament ever in the history of all sports, WSL Final
Hypothetically, the current No.1 surfer could have won every tournament in the year only to lose the title in the year ending WSL Final, while another surfer may not have won a single tournament during the year (just placed high enough often enough) and end up the world champion with the roll of the dice.
This year was different with No.1 ranked Simmers retaining her championship. However, if this was the outcome every year than the WSL Final tournament would be meaningless or redundant, er, top ranked surfer at the end of the year becomes the champion surfer of the year.
Football, baseball, soccer, hockey, etc. may have playoffs but that's for a team sport and a berth in the Super Bowl or World Series, FIFA World Cup, Stanley Cup, etc. In that perspective, the WSL Final isn't a playoff, it's a king of the hill format with the only player (surfer) with nothing to gain and everything to lose being the world's current No. 1.
Professional women's and men's tennis do have a year ending tournament, but that's just to satisfy fans who can't get enough. The result won't effect the Number 1 ranking that a player has worked his ass off all year to attain, not just the fortunes during a two week period.

That format is obviously a scam. What it does is gives wsl more power to pick the winner they want or the one that’s most lucrative. A tenth of a point could be the difference between a world title win and lose. It’s obviously designed like that so they have options. Judging isn’t even transparent as it should be. I believe everything should be on video record with judges… everything.

Yes, she got robbed twice by the cynical WSL's new finals format. John John Florence was sweating bullets in last year's final, but thankfully, he pulled it off. He talked about the insane stress after. Filipe Toledo dropped out of the tour after enduring that final 5 BS. It is a hateful disregard for the hearts and minds of surfing's top competitors. Carissa should have had two more world titles under her belt, she was top points winner both times she lost the final in Trestles slop after charging and winning at some of the world's toughest breaks. The WSL does a great job bringing live action to us, but they really blew it with this change of finals format, it sucks, nobody likes it, everybody hates it, they don't care. All about $$$. The regard for the WSL has plummeted, but they don't seem to care about that either.

IF she had won, NO ONE would have complained about final format. As top seed she had the advantage in heats surfed. The best surfer won on the day ,that's sport.

_The best surfer won on the day ,that's sport._
So, the world championship gets won by the best surfer of the day ignoring and nullifying the performance of the rest of the year? What other sport does this?
      ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
_IF she had won, NO ONE would have complained about final format._
Well, then, the WSL Final, or tacking on an extra tournament, would be redundant then, wouldn't it?? No. 1 remains No. 1 (oh really). As far as "NO ONE would complain," the WSL would complain since the format requiring the current No. 1 to jump through another hoop is clearly upset minded.

@@ronw8628 My point was if Carrisa had won on finals day ,no one would complain about the finals format. Many sports have finals playoffs best of 5 games.

Everybody who knows understands that she's one of the greatest women surfers of all time. Having said that, she knew what she signed up for and had to know that this was a possibility... maybe it was good time to step away because the new crew is here to stay for a while.

the surfers don't have a voice in the WSL's new format or perhaps they should strike. I imagine the WSL will double down defending the WSL Final but if they were to take a poll the new format would flop.

Carissa should take these recent loses as a sign it’s time to do take on a bigger and more rewarding challenge: she needs to have three babies and raise them. When the youngest is old enough to surf a lot then she can get back on the tour as the goat of goats.

Stupid format. Number 5 guy gets hot at the finals and wins. Thats not how it ends. The leader throughout the year should get the title. Besides,WSL judging is so so fixed. Who watches the tour anyways. Just watch free surfing.
