Gian Carlo Menotti - Ricercare and Toccata on a Theme from “The Old Maid and The Thief” (1953)

Based on his earlier 1939 opera “The Old Maid and the Thief” commissioned by NBC, the Ricercare and Toccata was adapted by the composer, 14 years later, on a theme from the opera’s third scene. The first movement, the Ricercare demonstrates advanced counterpoint and harmony. The second is rapid and giddy. The work, at seven minutes in length, endures and is commonly found in recitals in the present day.
