    My neighbor planted 1 pear tree in his yard in the 60's. It produces a big crop every other year. No other pear tree to cross pollinate with. The best tasting pears, ever.

      Fruit trees can be located a loooong distance away and still pollinate.

      @@jamiestendahl5592 no, not every type of fruit tree, it’s true for pears but not for many others. Apricots for example are self pollinating, same with many cherry, nectarine and plum varieties.

    I just watched a video of yours of dos and donts of growing fruit trees where you literally say. "Do not backfill with compost" but in this one you say do backfill with compost.

    They grow perfectly well in northern areas like here in Quebec and we have -30C to -35C temperatures in winter.
    But if you have harsh winter put something to protect the trunk against the sun in winter.

      I just bought some of those and already having regrets cause I live in zone 8 where it's hot and humid and we face all the fungal anything could face and just read they can have many issues. I'm trying to not every spray them I want everything organic and now wonder how I will keep them fungal /disease Free in such hot and humid weather! We also battle clay soil here which they don't like I just read! I know they like sun but wonder sometimes if they'd be better here among some trees that give alittle shade part of the day

    Thank you, Luke!! We rent, but we are allowed leeway with the yard. There's a single (neglected) old anjou pear tree in the yard that produces vigorously, the branches get laden with fruits, but they're hard and bitter. I'll take this input and put it to work in the coming season, in hope of bringing this one back to a more productive form. Someone else in the area must have a pear tree also, though, as this one here is the only one on the property, but like I say, the branches are loaded with fruits. We're in a 5a zone, if that makes any difference.

    I raise mason bees to pollinate my fruit trees. I planted a pear this spring and it already has fruit growing.
    Make your yard a habitat for native pollinators. Mason bees do 50x the pollination than honey bees and you won't have to worry about cross pollination.

    • @moewilson4605
      @moewilson4605 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We are so hoping our two pear tree make it. We plant tomorrow. Mason bees are part of our plan. We bought a bee house for solitary pollinators and hope they will find it. I have seen them in the area. We are also planting pink clover into our grass and some flowering bushes. Unfortunately, as we back onto green belt, we have to put stakes and netting around our smaller trees so they are not eaten by deer. We burlap in the winter as we live in Ottawa and it can drop to below minus 40 Celsius on occasion.

    • @cindymcphail9694
      @cindymcphail9694 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Did the same this year, but we had an extended period of 45F and the blooms came and went before it went to > 50F when the bees came out. next year... a new pear tree so that there will be a companion for pollinating.

    Do you have any idea why my pear sapling's leaves are shading to a brown color?
    they are still silky and alive but it just seems odd. The plant is about 2 months old, and it seems to be growing. It had recently sprouted a new leaf and that leaf is. also turning brown but is also not very green. Oddly, the leaf seems to be growing. The plant is underneath an artificial. light indoors in a room-temp environment and is in a plastic cup that isn't that deep. The dirt has some fertilizer in it, and i water it every 1 and a half days.

    I have a question: can you grow another pear tree from suckers? I have read that yes you can and I have also read that they won't produce fruit. Do you happen to know?

    How big does tree get before pruning? I obtained a 1-foot long bare root sapling, planted a couple months ago. It's flourishing (here in central MI) but it's so tiny I can't imagine it should be pruned, hence the question. -- it's just one tree but it's a 5-variety Franken-tree.

    Is it normal for a single pear tree to fruit? I have had one in my back yard since I moved in 4 years ago and every year since we’ve gotten around 100 pears from that tree. Are those pears good for eating?

      Smokey B I was moving boxes of packed items in my bedroom. I found a plastic bag with a mango that had gone bad and it was so warm and the seed has sprouted into this gorgeous tree but I accidentally forgot it and it died it broke my heart because it was the biggest fattest tree that grew inside the degrading mango just like it would have on the ground no mold no stink just natural sprouting. It'll haunt me forever I've never got one to sprout since. I'll have to take a poor mango that won't turn out edible and leave it in a plastic bag and let it rot again

      Smokey B Alexander if you're starting from scratch how do you know which side is the root side?

      it helps a lot because I did not even open mine because it was inside of the mango sprouting in the deteriorating meat with lots of heat it just busted right through the pit itself and came out the side. I was not even thinking about cracking open the hard shell and looking at what was inside that's kind of embarrassing but I do live in a town just outside of Seattle Washington 3rd Generation so we're not big on growing mangoes it's cold. a short growing season but one of the biggest avocado trees I ever saw was by the University of Washington a very old 18 hundreds house left in the middle of the city in between two big buildings protected from the wind but direct sun on it and a huge compost from the restaurant across the street and an avocado has sprouted years ago and the tree actually got avocados on it from the heat from the compost pile. it was so exciting to see in Seattle unfortunately it's all long gone now including the restaurant which it been there since the sixties when the tree started. Seattle sucks for history and keeping things alive we build big ugly modern buildings over the top of everything that's beautiful thank you for all your help period I have a giant pile of mango pits from a big bag of mangoes that somebody gave to us that we're kind of going bad we picked out all the goodies and ketchup it so here goes wish me luck I'll get them going in the summer outside on the deck and then bring them in in the winter take care

      I use a butter knife to get the seed out.. Also they like a warm place to sprout. I have a seed heating pad I got at Amazon. it keeps the temp at 90° . mine sprouted in 2 weeks. put in potting soil in 3 in peat pots. water with filtered water then put the pots in plastic shoe boxes. check everyday. some don't sprout. so don't worry.

      Just let the seed rot in your backyard in a place which is wet. It will sprout. I have seen this in India

    Can you talk about trees that are growing back. I purchased a home with trees in the back and two look dead however at the base there are branches or something beginning to grow. Do I pull the tree or is the tree able to come back?

    I have a single pear tree that looks like it nearly died and it's been coming back and producing lots of fruit but no other pears nearby... So I'm confused by you saying they need cross pollination to produce. Could you explain? I really want to care for it better. I'm studying up on it.

    I live in Texas and planted a pear tree from seed about a year ago. Since then, I have learned (as you stated) that they need much colder weather than Texas has to offer. Is it possible to use my pear tree as root stock for an orange tree so I can give a go at something that will actually fruit well in Texas, or should I abandon the plant? I am aware that Texas is under a citrus quarantine, but as there are no citrus plants around me (that I am aware of) I doubt my citrus would catch or spread disease.

    Nice guide - I just planted a Seckel and Moonglow last week.
    Situation - I am wanting to plant trees in front of a my house for privacy. I ordered 5 mimosa trees and planted them three weeks ago. The problem is that despite the steep slope of my hill, there is inadequate drainage and the soil is heavy with clay. All 5 saplings turned orange-yellow in color and I think it's due to too much water. Question: I plan to replace all the dying mimosa trees with a water loving tree. I would like to pick something that provides fruit or something useful but still can also serve as a privacy barrier to the road. I know you said peach trees love water, but this is basically a bog. Any ideas on what I should plant?
    Very appreciative of any answer you have for me - Thanks!

    Hi, MIGARDENER. Can a pear tree cross pollinate with the neighbor's apple tree? We don't have room for 2 pears here in SF east bay. : (

      They won't cross unfortunately. Two totally different species.

      You can buy a tree with more cultivars grafted on it, or buy a regular pear tree and graft some other cultivars on it. They should bloom at approx. same time.
