    Back to the future?
    The bricks on Independence Hall were laid with lime mortar.
    The interior walls were plastered with lime mortar.
    If that was the better method for mixing mortar, we would never have moved away from it to begin with.

      There were some very good reasons why tradesmen moved away from Lime mortar, the new materials such as portland cement and gypsum plaster, acrylic paints, these were much easier to use, quicker to apply and cheaper to manufacturer. The trouble was their use had unexpected consequences due to their incompatibility with the traditional methods of construction, mostly this was how they dealt with moisture, portland cement traps moisture, Lime allows it to evaporate, this resulted in cold and damp walls, it took many years before the industry became aware of this and I guess the commentator here is still caught up on the science. Hi can i ask why you compress the coat in-between layers?. Also do you use mesh?.
    Cheers Tom

      @oldbuilders11  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      We try NOT to compress between layers as that allows more air to be entrapped within the material, so a very light trowelling is applied to spread out any high spots, thus giving better thermal performance. On the last coat more compression is inevitable as the flattening out of the final layer is necessary in preparation for the finish coat. Mesh is important to use for insulation depths of over 60mm.

    Hi
    Great work. The house fits very nice into the landscape. Did you just insulate from the inside? At the begining it looks you plastered (with kork?) from the outside as well. Is there a certain inside to outside ratio with this produkt? Greetings from Germany

      It is insulated with a cork lime plaster, just on the inside, external was hydraulic lime plaster (Hydraulischer Kalkputz). The lime was painted with a German Mineral Paint, Beeks. Are you looking for a cottage in Ireland?.. Danke für dein Interesse.

    Why did you not use roundtower lime, Irish company in Cork. Looks a faster way to get the job done love the finish. Did you apply 40-50mm of insulating plaster?

    • @oldbuilders11
      @oldbuilders11  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      it would be great if there was an irish made product, but they are all imported. 50mm was used on that project, but one can use up to 100mm, but its expensive stuff.

      50mm insulating plaster. The insulating plaster was Diathonite, the lime plaster was St. Astier. Roundtower is a good supplier as well, their lime is from France, as is St Astier, the Diathonite is from Italy. One can use Irish lime as a hot mix with a potsalan or guaged with hydraulic. Unfortuneatly there is not Hydraulic lime made in Ireland.

    Is it possible to get a smooth finish on this plaster or will always be a little rough?

    • @oldbuilders11
      @oldbuilders11  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes the finish can be as smooth as a gypsum plaster finish, or should i say a gypsum plaster finish is as smooth as a 19th century lime putty finish 🙂. In this video its a vernacular cottage so the Roundy slightly bokety finish that follows the contours of the stone is like it would have been originally. So where a building is a larger formal farmhouse or a Georgian or Victorian building a smooth finish would be more appropriate. From here www.oldbuilders.com/job_types/lime%20rendering/limerendering_01.htm then scrole down to "Internal finish, skim coat,". feel free to email us info@oldbuilders.com

      @@oldbuilders11 Very good, I have 130 YO Galway farmhouse and the west prevailing side has a lot of damp on the stone wall which is badly covered with modern plaster board. I am trying to decide on Diathonite vs insulated plasterboard. But I am pretty sure the large 2.5 feet think stone wall needs to breath. Is one of the damp issues anyway.

    • @oldbuilders11
      @oldbuilders11  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@eannaomainin7926 yes traditional lime and stone walls need to breath, insulated plasterboard is probably the worst thing you could do to an old building - www.oldbuilders.com/insulation%20centre/1_dontdryline_01.htm - www.oldbuilders.com/why%20use%20lime/whyuselime.htm feel free to email me if you have further questions.

      @oldbuilders11  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes you can get a completely flat lime skim coat, as flat and as smooth as a modern gypsom plaster. You can see samples of that kind of finish in any victorian or Georgian house, and this is still routinely done by our firm.
