Nice little machine. Was hoping to see the expanding drum in action.

Is it dangerous to go without wearing a mask?

if you're doing it for a hobby or living, yes. if you're doing it for a two minute video, no.

Derek - 1/6 HP; 1725 RPM. I was concerned when I obtained the motor about the low HP, but it has proven to be quite adequate. There is not much resistance against the drum and the 1/6 HP is fully adequate to get the two 8" drums running. Best of luck with your endeavors.

Hey Burt Thanks for posting you video. Where do you find sandpaper for you drum and what grits do you use ?
I just picked up a 5 wheel 10 inch Lapidary unit but I know nothing about where to get stuff from.

Ebay is often a good source - www.ebay.com/sch/sis.html?_nkw=SILICON+CARBIDE+LAPIDARY+SANDING+BELT+800+GRIT+FITS+6+DRUM+2+1+2+x+18+15+16&_itemId=181379979657&_trksid=p2047675.m4099 If they don't have what you need, try Covington - covington-engineering.com/belts/ Or Rio Grande - www.riogrande.com/Product/3M-2-1-2-Diamond-Belt-1200-Grit/201688Burt

Thanks I'll use your link. I just joined the local rock club I'm sure I'll get some more info there too.
I like that you have your rock stuff in you wood shop. I have working on some wood trivets with rock slab inserts.

Yes. I like combining the two - like a small keepsake box of wood with a cut & polished rock lid.

I'm making my own lapidary grinder... What horsepower is that motor, if you don't mind me asking?
