When I bought the Monologue about 10 days ago I ordered the Volca Beats with it due to this video. I also added a Volca Keys and a Zoom MS-70CDR to the kit last week and all I can say it WOW! It's been a lot of fun so far just making a lot of noise! Now, if only I could find the time to sleep...!
Great review except how can you review this synth and not mention it's best feature - microtuning? The built-in ability to play in pure interval scales (including ones created by Aphex Twin) is what sold me on this synth.
it's pretty cool...only 1 bar (16 step seq) is a bit short for most musical things though and doesn't appear to have a load of patterns you can chain together (like the tb3 or tb-03 or sh-01a). you do get 4 channels of parameter motion on the monologue and presets. the price is cool and it does have actual midi ports unlike the circuit, reface and electribes.
Good question! I create mostly trip hop stuff and would love to know the answer to your question because I'm looking for a good synth that can be beautiful and dirty at the same time :)
There are ways to add drum sounds to your sequencer, most people do that with the "motion" setting of the sequencer, so its possible. I however could advise to use this synth in combo with effects pedals (reverb, pitchshift, delay, multifx) and a looper. The sound you can get from this thing with added effects are huge. There are aphex twin presets that have bass drums along with acid leads/basses, so its def doable, but I suggest you get your drums from somewhere else. I use a drum sequencer app on my phone and record that into the looper pedal. Shaping drum sounds on the monologue is def doable, but its only really an enjoyable workflow if you know your Monologue in and out.
I don't know much about synths. Can you plug these into a laptop and then make beats in a DAW like Garage Band? Or is the idea to make your beat right in the synth hardware (in this case Monologue and Volca Beats) and then you're done?
Do you want the DAW to tell the sytnh what notes to play or do you want to record the audio from them (or both?) I'd recommend plugging the included USB cable into your computer and synth to send notes to it and get an audio interface to record the synth's playback. I hope this helps.
I'm a bit confused as to what the Volca beats is doing here? The lineout/headphones are going into the monologue? What is the midi doing then? I only have a Volca bass but am looking to expand
I dunno. I've seen several review/demo's of this machine and the stems for the pots seem to rock about quite a bit when fine tuning. In other words, the pots seem to not be very rock solid which could potentially lead to problems as a Monologue unit ages with regular use.
Hey, youre videos are very helpful, expecialy how synthesizers work series, that I have found so far. I have decided that I want a synth. From what I found it would be analog, because it speaks more to me. From this video I found that it is probably worth looking at polly synth that has a good mono voice. So here is my question.. I found three nice Korg units that each suite my needs in a different way. First off is Korg monologue around 299€ + it is very cheep + has greater sequencing abilities compered to minilogue + would take less hassle to carry around + has this drive thing for filter - it is monologue - it has less keys (25) Korg minilogue around 539€ I will list only advantages and disadvantages that are relevant for me + it's a polly ;) +great mono and unison voices in one box. + 37 keys - doesn't have a motion sensor for movement of the knobs when sequencer is active In my opinion this is such a huge advantage to have. If minilogue would have this, I'd buy it instantly. And here comes the confusing part Korg minilogue XD around 620€ They claim that they have gathered all the best from minilogue and prologue. The confusing part for me is "hybrid", if I understand correctly, it uses two same analog oscillators that minilogue uses and trows in third that is digital changeable via interface. Sound good, but doesn't it kill the vibe of it being analog? (Analogy would be valve and hybrid guitar amps, if you get what I want to say with this) Can I turn it off and operate it like minilogue and engage the digital oscillator when I wish? + it's polly + it has record motion in sequence for the sequencer + I think is also has the "drive" option for filter. + has these digital effects like reverb and delay, which I find as a guitar player very handy + claims to have all good things from minilogue, and adds prologue and digital world. - the most expensive, but If like described, I'd be ready to throw that extra 100€, compered to minilogue. And I have questions in terms of connectivity, do all devices have similar strengths in this field? Do I need an amp? In the end, thank you for reading this, any new information will help me a lot! Hope be able to clear my head and by the best unit for me.
the third oscillator on the minilogue xd/prologue is a programmable digital synth oscillator--meaning you can download synth engines from the community. The effects are also digital and I think that they are user-replaceable as well.
and no because you can just turn the digital oscillator all the way down on the mixer, effectively turning it off. Most of the synth is analog but I don't think that the digital oscillator and effects are a bad thing.
Great review. I have come into a few spare sheckles to throw at some music gear and I’m having a hard time deciding where to throw it. Between this nd the Microbrute, this has no arp but does have presets. Compared to the volcas, you could get two for the price of this and have to deal with small fiddly controls. Throw some esoterica like a Timbre Wolf or even the Micromonsta into the mix, there’s a lot of different ways I could go. What’s the opinions of those who have and used these bits of gear? What’s proved to be more useful over time? Cheers
Great info! I am learning about synthesizers and this helped a lot! If one wants to structure a song with Verse/Chorus/Verse, for example, would this work? My guess is that 2 presets would need to be created (one sound+sequencer for Verse and one sound+sequencer for Chorus) and called up as needed? Is this feasible with this synthesizer? Perhaps an external sequencer would help with the switching? Thanks!
You could in theory make up several patterns and manually switch between them. Sixteen steps is very limiting though. You would be doing an awful lot of pattern switching. It's really aimed at groove-based performances rather than pop songs.
Nolan Fahey It depends on what you want to do. If you’re looking to play chords and ambient pads, then you would need the Minologue. It can of course play monophonically as well, and has a step sequencer. The Monologue on the other hand can only do mono, BUT it has a much better step sequencer, and is killer for bass. I ended up selling the Mini and buying a Mono, because it pairs so much better with my drum machine. Floaty chords and synth pads I can add at the end using Ableton...rock solid, step sequenced bass that clock matches with my drum machine? Not so much.
Does anyone can explain me how to have this exact same setup? I already have the midi cable but I can't find how to have the sound of my volca beats in my headphones through the monologue... What type of cable do I need to go from volca to monologue audio in?? Thx!
Hi. You need a minijack 3.5 to 6.35mm jack cable. The length should be about 2.5 to 5 meters. Choose more known brands for higher durability. You can also use adapters, i.e. for a standard 3.5mm jack cable (3.5 both ends) and use a 3.5 to 6.35mm jack adapters. Also, in order to sync multiple devices together, you'll need something called "Midi cable". You can also use your own computer to control external devices like monologue. Buy something called "Midi interface".
Any idea how to save favorites? I see you can recall them using the shift key plus step sequencer buttons but I cant find how to save patches to favorites? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for the review. Does anyone know how to adjust the Glide / Portamento while not using the sequencer? My Volca Keys has a Glide knob as well as the ability to send both the Pitch and Cutoff to the LFO. Paired with an MPKMini and a Raspberry Pi, I get a 4 octave arpeggiator. Trying to decide on this Monologue or the JP-08 to compliment the Volca for mobile use.
Hey guys, I'm just getting into making electronic music and after searching around for ages, have decided to get the Monologue and Volca Beats. What other gear will I need to start playing around like this? Thanks!
I like how he compares it to the amazing brute series by Arturia, which is a real kick in the balls, its hard to compete with it. And the only argument he had was it doesn't have presets????? Come on....
can't minilogue do unison of its four voices? that stuff about monophonic synths allowing different expressions to the minilogue is a bit bullshit when it can just do unison and have an even more powerful sound
It has a fat bass, but the filter is much grittier than the Moog ladder filter. That's not a bad thing, but don't expect it to sound exactly like a Moog. I do however have a few Moog-esque patches on mine that I created.

Yeas, this synth is just incredible and portable analog monster BUT! Why all time talks about waveshaping wavshaping=means analog?)) FL Studio integrated such waveshaping where you can see how your sound moves in early 2000 year) and until now i can't imagine to work without it...and analog synths just doing it after 20 years) looks like hardware moves not so fast :D
Yes. Manually played notes and notes in a sequence can drive another instrument via MIDI. You can also use it as controller or controlled to synchronize tempo, which I think Justin is doing with the Volca Beats. The same can be done via CV using a 3.5mm patch cable (a la Eurorack). I have used the Monologue to simultaneously drive my Minitaur and control the tempo of my DFAM, with MIDI and CV respectively. You know, because part of the fun of synths is getting stupid.
So basically it has a simple form of automation just like you would apply automation in a DAW?! Did i understand that correctly about the motion control?
why is there always ,when someone is gonna review a synth ,a guitar etc,,,the ting you wanna get a certain view of is always hoocked up with another gear ,,..where is a review with just the gear youre wanna buy and hear ..its impossible to get a real sound ..if im gonna buy a korg monologue,,will it sound like this or do i need a volca sample thing,a teenage enginnering or a modal sculpture to get it right ..do know what im talkin about..im not that good in english ..so im confused with all reviews..have a synthastic day
I want to like this, but its so hard to justify spending money on an analog monosynth when i could just get an analog four or something and get overbridge capability (which should really be on every peice of hardware) , four voices, the option to play it in a single voice anyways.
Jesse Mitchell You are joking? Right? You are comparing an almost $1000 4 voice synth to a $300 mono. If you have that kind of money to ‘just get an A4’ then you probably don’t need to ‘justify’ spending another $300 on a monosynth
Mad Mac 66 not at all. id rather get one piece of quality kit that i know ill use for years, rather than just buy a bunch of random cheap synths that take up space and i have to upgrade later. If i save up for a few extra months, I get more voices at a lower cost per voice, and a superior set of sequencing and workflow features, as well as meaningful updates to the OS. Its no big deal because while im saving, i get more time to really learn what i already have, which is the whole point. Not to mention if i didnt care about sequencing or overbridge, why buy the monologue for a hundred less than the 4 voice minilogue?
That’s all well and good and I don’t disagree with any of that. But it’s also neither here nor there. It doesn’t support your original statement nor does it refute my argument to it. You’re comparing a $1000 poly synth to a $300 mono. Apples to apples mate
you mean apples to oranges. All im trying to get at is that your value for your dollar on a monologue isnt really great. Get a used volca for less, a used minilogue for about the same as a new mono plus tax, or save up for something nice that you dont have to replace later. But in a community that prioritizes nostalgia, and gear lust over making listenable music, i guess the army of analog monos makes sense. Afterall, you cant post envy inducing studio pics if you only have two or three main synths.
Jesse Mitchell oh now I hear ya. I agree COMPLETELY with what you’re saying there. In fact I was just making the same assessment this week. Shopping for a lower priced synth that will be versatile and not take up too much space. With so much positive reviews of the brute/logue monos I feeling this should be a safe bet. Couldn’t escape the feeling it’s s bit of a one trick pony (and takes up too muck space-don’t need the keyboard) Ended up with a Micromonsta instead, which will suit me better and more bang-or notes-for my buck.
I love this synth tremendously(the sound, the color, knobs & price)...but I would have much preferred if this synth was implemented in the Korg Krome.Currently, the Krome is Korg's mid-grade workstation synth and although I love it,it does not have a virtual analogue synth add on option, like the M3 had.I would have been fine, with paying $300 more for my Krome,if something like this was included from the factory...or there was some sort of expansion chip. The Kronos, while it is amazing,is just a very expensive computer DAW,that takes forever and a day,to boot up and I can't deal with that.Korg really needs to bring back virtual analogue and also needs to implement flash memory(rather than an outdated,Linux based system.)
Korg need to get this guy do review full time.
Pure passion and he explains it so easily to understand. Good job reverb
Okay, shill
Right? He's such a good presenter
No, he’s great.
Was sold on this the moment korg said Aphex Twin
you need not look at another review on this- this guy and his passion NAILED IT! Great product.
having tried it out myself i get his hard on for this synth

I have the volca sample, bass and keys. Just bought a monologue this morning, awaiting delivery. I can't wait to rub it through my zoom ms70cdr.
That's promising!
Same here lol
I'll buy the mono and sit through our lockdown just watching the waveforms. Like a lavalamp.
Justin Delay/Reverb
This guy is a trip
0:57 i love how the oscilloscope fits inside the "o" in Monologue :O
Same
That loop at the start is insane, would love to hear that as a full track
“Well a trumpet can only play one note and unless you’re, uh, a GREGORIAN MONK, you can only SING one note”
Justin is great! Totally want to see this guy do more reviews and videos! The Reverb 'synthesis' series with him was also amazing!
Dude. Best review video I’ve ever seen.
Been debating what my first Synth will be.
I’m sold!
@cat has camera it’s going great! I absolutely love it. So powerful
I had no idea Jake from New Girl was into synths! This makes me love him even more!
Excellent video. This seems a no brainer of a buy. Just have to decide what colour!
Great review except how can you review this synth and not mention it's best feature - microtuning? The built-in ability to play in pure interval scales (including ones created by Aphex Twin) is what sold me on this synth.
LOL, 'Justin'? What kind of name is that!?
you tell him, Colon
hahahaha brilliant!
I don't know, a name of latin origin. lol
"From Reverb.com" is perfectly normal, though.
:)
Justin my man!!! Great review. I am a proud owner of this beauty as well and I love it so much. Keep up the great work my dudez
What fkng awesome synth
Im not going to buy this because I have too many synths already..........said no one ever!🤥
I would sell everything and get two of these. Theyre awesome. The best mono since the PRO ONE. Hands down.
Yeah its great i got a red one.
me as well.... had it for a week and love it.
maybe thats the problem.
Is it 1995?
Fantastic Justin. I knew zilch about synths before watching this. Now I'm understanding the language and it's making sense.
BEST MONOLOGUE REVIEW ON TH-cam. HANDS DOWN!

Err Gregorian monks sang one note at a time. I think you mean a Tibetan monk.
Or Mongolian throat singers.
Mongolian Throat singing
gregorian chants were practiced by catholic monks, not tibetan monks.
Great demo thanks .
Brilliant review thanks..can't wait until they are released in England..so much for so little Kudos
Hi. this synthesizer has the arpeggio function
This or the Novation BSII for monophonic stuff in music akin to Portishead/Massive Attack/Burial ?
Good question! I create mostly trip hop stuff and would love to know the answer to your question because I'm looking for a good synth that can be beautiful and dirty at the same time :)
I have the BSII and love it. I got an SH-101 thinking it would be a vintage replacement but I'm keeping my Bass Station.
Great review thanks! This is def on my list!
Great video. But if i want to sequense/record a drum machine do i need another stamd alone sequenser?
There are ways to add drum sounds to your sequencer, most people do that with the "motion" setting of the sequencer, so its possible.
I however could advise to use this synth in combo with effects pedals (reverb, pitchshift, delay, multifx) and a looper. The sound you can get from this thing with added effects are huge. There are aphex twin presets that have bass drums along with acid leads/basses, so its def doable, but I suggest you get your drums from somewhere else. Shaping drum sounds on the monologue is def doable, but its only really an enjoyable workflow if you know your Monologue in and out.
thank *YOU* so much. you've inpsired me on the monologue. great explanation of mono vs poly. that struck a chord with me. no pun intended. =)
trying to decide between this and the behringer model D....
Got mine with a free Volca Kick,
great demo, thanks
Just bought a blue one from Reverb. Can't wait!
Slightly off topic, what's that lunchbox looking thing in the left of frame on the main shot?
Looks like a guitar head.
It's a Benson amp.
arturia matrixbrute, moog sub 37, or korg monologue + minilogue?
Thanks for this!
Regarding sound how does this compare to the Timbre Wolf for warm funky leads?
1:50 don't need to plug in the power?
I wish Korg would update the Minilogue sequencer to the same specs as the Monologue...
mk2 maybe ?
thus reducing htat market share?.. doesnt seem likely.
they just did
I'm a bit confused as to what the Volca beats is doing here? The lineout/headphones are going into the monologue? What is the midi doing then?
I only have a Volca bass but am looking to expand
the monologue is outputting bpm and tempo sync commands to the Volca beats.
I dunno. I've seen several review/demo's of this machine and the stems for the pots seem to rock about quite a bit when fine tuning. In other words, the pots seem to not be very rock solid which could potentially lead to problems as a Monologue unit ages with regular use.
What gear would I need with the monologue for speakers or amp? Cables and such. Total synth noob!
Just get yourself a pair of KRKs and an aux cable that splits into two so that you can pair the monitors and run the synth right through it
@@Sssummerfalll thanks for the help

Korg minilogue around 539€

+ it's a polly ;)
+great mono and unison

+ 37 keys
- doesn't have a motion sensor for movement of the knobs when sequencer is active
In my opinion this is such a huge advantage to have. If minilogue would have this, I'd buy it instantly.

Uh wanna start with synthesis. Does it require anything additional to sync this drum machine with synthesizer?
3.5mm aux cord/patch cable
wish it had a looper so that you could loop the rhythm and then do some lead over it with a different sound.
I mean… you can buy a TC Electronic looper dirt cheap. I use my guitar pedals with this synth..
@@UnleashDLion Yeah. I have one. There's always a solution when you combine gear.

Thanks for the review. Does anyone know how to adjust the Glide / Portamento while not using the sequencer? You have to go into the menu to do that.
SO THIS THINGS JUST MAKES SOUND EFFECTS ? 😂 🤣 😂
props for the reference to the polyphonic gregorian monks.
But you should take it easy with the mdma
Can you remove the wood? I live in the tropics and wood goes moldy.
yep mold is tasty
Probably, look at Markus Fuller's teardown of the Minilogue.. I think it was just screwed on
It's almost certainly completely laminated, that is sealed in a resin, so you shouldn't have to worry about mold.
Hey guys, I'm just getting into making electronic music and after searching around for ages, have decided to get the Monologue and Volca Beats. What other gear will I need to start playing around like this? Thanks!
Monitor speakers, Audio interface, and a DAW (digital Audio Workstation)
You don't need a DAW or a computer to jam like this. Our studio is completely computer free. But s good pair of minitors and a mixer
So if I were to add a module with 4 voices would I be able to play with 5 different voices on the monologue.
i don't think that's how it works...
His activity ring is way below stand up ring, on the Apple Watch.
I want it!!!👍
I like how he compares it to the amazing brute series by Arturia, which is a real kick in the balls, its hard to compete with it. And the only argument he had was it doesn't have presets????? Come on....
Thanks for the info. Dumb question. Do you recommend a solid state amp or can u use tube amps for the signal output.
I love this synth. Only one question Ok now give me ONE reason why it has 100 presets and the Minilogue 200?
Saar Dean because it is cheaper.
If Nick Miller was a synth guy he’d be Justin
This guy is hard as stone
Does this synth need a reverb peddle?
Does anybody know if you can adjust the swing on the sequencer??
Yes you can!
can't minilogue do unison of its four voices? that stuff about monophonic synths allowing different expressions to the minilogue is a bit bullshit when it can just do unison and have an even more powerful sound
I own both and the Mono is much much better than it's older brother.
Can the LFO modulate more than one parameter at once?
No, but motion sequencing really negates the need for that.
How fat are the bass sounds on this? I want a cool little mono synth but I need something that can get those moog-esque bass sounds
Maxfield Stephens this is really good for bass. Really fat bass, and really good leads
Tigerhunter887 rad, thanks!

MyManDan It’s the Korg Volca beats I believe?
This dudes dope
Can this be used as an midi controller?
You know, because part of the fun of synths is getting stupid.
gr8 review
Hate its presets. anyone know if it is possible to overwrite them?
Absolutely you can overwrite them.
So basically it has a simple form of automation just like you would apply automation in a DAW?! Did i understand that correctly about the motion control?
Yea. Only 4 controls at a time though, remember that..
bro you okay? you're literally shaking
why is there always ,when someone is gonna review a synth ,a guitar etc,,,the ting you wanna get a certain view of is always hoocked up with another gear ,,..where is a review with just the gear youre wanna buy and hear ..its impossible to get a real sound ..if im gonna buy a korg monologue,,will it sound like this or do i need a volca sample thing,a teenage enginnering or a modal sculpture to get it right ..do know what im talkin about..im not that good in english ..so im confused with all reviews..have a synthastic day
pretty much everything you hear except the drums came from the monologue
Wait so you can't play chords on it?
No. Monophonic means one note at a time. Many analog synths are monophonic. It's ideal for bass and leads.
Chance Meeting ah not for me then 😉
its great a great add on if you already got other synths.. like this and a microkorg and a kaossilator.. you're pretty much set!
Can anyone tell me if there is a synth sound on here similar to what the Killers use?
