We Got Lucky when Tom Petty began his music career... Miss him RIP Tom.
Yes ,we did. Bought his first album just after high school. Have the next 12 years on vinyl. Then CD's. I got lucky and saw him 4 times.
@ Music
Indeed we did! Hurt bad losing him and his enormous talent so soon.
@@razorsharpe3371 Yes it did, way to soon.
Tom’s voice was fantastic on this track. I wish it was 1982 again.
me too... I was 17, my junior year of Hi Skool, just got myself a '78 Ttop Z28 & was going to all the great concerts around Atlanta, Athens & Macon Georgia
Add my vote for "Don't Do Me Like That"
Tom is an America treasure! I'm 68 years old and Tom and Bob Seger are the premier singer songwriters of my generation
I 100% agree with that statement 🙋🏻♀️
Dylan is a pretty good songwriter too.
@@1621billw That’s true also !
I'd add Bill Joel and Bernie Taupin to that list.
@@JaDav40 John Mellencamp is a horses patoot, but also a gifted singer/songwriter.
This is Tom's take on the Mad Max movies.if you were there in the 80's, you know. The video was tailored made for MTV and a big deal with heavy rotation.
Yeah one of my favorites. I still listen to it but I haven’t seen the video in years. Funny now seeing the TV’s & the video games.
I love the old Battlestar Galactica scenes playing on the T.V. sets
“Breakdown” live is amazing if y’all haven’t checked it out yet.
The version from Pack Up the Plantation, I take it? For those who have never seen it, I won't mention here what makes that version so special... no spoilers from me!
I really miss Tom Petty. RIP ❤
I remember being mesmerized by this video when it was on MTV back when I was a kid. This is one of my favorites from Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Great reaction.
same, this was my intro to him. It takes me back
Jay & Amber, you'll love their "Here Comes My Girl" and "Don't Do Me Like That" !!!! Earlier Petty on classic album.
Omg, Tom Petty is my first musical love, and Here Comes My Girl is my absolute FAVORITE song of his!!!
Late 70's early 80's rocked.
When I was a college student at the University of Florida in the 70s Top Petty was just a local boy singing with his band at the time Mudcrutch. Back in those days the bar owner would pay off the band at the end of the night in cash. One night I was sitting at the bar at closing time talking to the bartender/owner. Tom Petty walked up and got his pay. When he walked away the bartender said to me "That boy can't sing a lick but he sure does draw a crowd".
I always wondered if that bartender ever changed his mind about Petty?
Great story. He does have a unique voice (a little Dylanish, but much better imo) and he's not really a singer in the classical sense. But there's something about his voice and expression (not to mention the music itself) that is pure rock Americana.
His voice always had a ton of character to it, and that’s a big appeal for me when it comes to singers.
I love his older music, I loved this album when I was very young. Greatful to see him about 5 or more times in the 90's.
Rip Tom.
This was always one of my favorite videos from Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers. Liked the entire "Mad Max" feel of the video, post apocalyptic and futuristic...
R.I.P To a Great Singer Tom Petty, Still Miss You Always
My favorite Tom Petty song is Walls(Circus) from the She’s the One Soundtrack. It’s heartwarming and makes me swoon and miss Tom Petty all at the same time.
RIP, TOM!! WE MISS YOU!! SUCH a GREAT SONG!! HUGS!!
This was prime video back in the day when MTV was actually playing music.
Tom Petty is still the only artist that I ever cried at their death.
I still remember where I was when I heard the news.
@alexfaulk6683 I hadn’t cried, or felt so devastatingly heartbroken, since John Lennon died. I listen to Tom every day, and this is one of my favorites. I miss him so much💔
We lost him too early.
Tom, and Christine McVie both brought me to tears 😢. RIP.
"Dont do me like that" was my start of loving Tom
Rob YOU got lucky when you found AMBER. Love, love Tom. Saw him 88/89 in London. BRILLIANT
I think Amber got lucky also. He treats her well.
My favorite Tom Petty song 😊😊😊
And favorite video.
The late 70s and early 80s Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers is so good. Just gritty and right in your face. Keep up the good work U 2. 😊
This and "Mary Jane's Last Dance" are my favorite TP and the heartbreakers songs. Love watching your reactions to songs I grew up listening to. It's like you get lost in the songs.
I "got lucky" when I got to see Petty in concert and he basically did a greatest hits marathon, including one from the Wilburys .
Damn shame... RIP😢
This and "Breakdown" are at the very top of my list of my favorite Tom Petty songs.
🎄 Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers Christmas song Christmas All Over Again 1992. 💔 miss them and thankful for all of the awesome music they left us.
My all time fave Tom Petty song!!!!
Great song! This video is from the early days of MTV when people were trying all sorts of novel approaches to making videos - the song has nothing to do with what's going on in the video but someone decided to make it a Mad Max style futuristic mini-movie.
Love the clips from Chuck Berry (and Battlestar Galactica) on the tvs.
If it’s possible for a song to be aware of just how very cool it is, this is a song that definitely knows.
I realize that this is an unpopular opinion, but I LOVED the Heartbreakers, and I think they played a role in what made Tom Petty exceptional. When he did his own thing later on, even though they were good songs, his songs sounded more hollow, and lacking in soul. The Heartbreakers, I think, had a unique soul in their sound.
You're absolutely right. Tom Petty completely lost his mojo when he teamed up with Jeff Lynne, and he stopped singing with the snarl in his voice. He would never again capture the magic of his early days.
Yes, indeed, particularly Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench. Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers had a unique sound as a band compared to Petty's solo and collaborative work.
I don’t think it’s an unpopular opinion.
Yeah, I agree, never been a fan of Jeff Lynne. He is just not my cup of tea and he's all over the late Petty stuff, Wilburys, and George Harrison's comeback. They are still great songs but I don't really like his pop-disco sound
I couldn’t agree more. I love the Heartbreaker days the most and feel they would have improved the latter work. Much of the rocking went away.
CHANGE OF HEART is a killer tune
"Change of Heart" is one of my favorite TP songs, too.
“Woman in Love” official music video is another Petty and the Heartbreakers classic
One of the BEST break-up songs ever!
Yes! One of my Favs, next check out - Don't Do my Like that - Jammin Me - American Girl
Love Tom Petty. In my opinion, "Even the Losers" is among his best songs. I think you'd like it, too.
You have just scratched the surface of Petty and the Heartbreakers.
One of my favorite TP songs, love the synth opening and Mike Campbells guitar solo. Good stuff! 😎
This song was my introduction to Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers in 82. My dad took me to the Long After Dark tour when they came here. Paul Carrack and Nick Lowe opened for them. Good times and memories! ❤
I love Tom Petty. Gone way too soon. He was really talented.
We still miss you Tom❤ Thanks for the video
I remember the week leading up to this video premiering on M tv , then on the following Tuesday I remember running from school to catch it. Great memories, Rest in Peace Tom Petty.
My favorite Tom Petty song.
Don't Do Me Like That by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, that's the one you need to hear next!
The Guitar solo player is Mike Campbell who helped with much of the songwriting credits for the band.. He formed a new band after Tom's passing..( Mike Campbell & The Dirty Knobs ) He has a singing voice very similar to Tom's.. check out his song Hell or High Water .. or Wreckless Abandon
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers finest work. This tune makes my top ten list of all songs ever recorded.
One of my favorite Tom Petty tunes. 👌🏼
That when they made good videos back in the 80's
My all time favorite Tom Petty song!! Glad y’all enjoyed it!
This is my favorite Tom Petty song!
This is one of my favorites from Tom Petty.
One of my favorites! Tom Petty was one of a kind, very distinctive and so many great songs ❤
Definitely one of my favs of Tom's but there's just so many!!❤❤
Oh my goodness!!!!! I haven't heard this song in decades 😮
Thank you thank you thank you!!!
Yes!!! My favorite Tom petty song, soooo good. Has to be a top 5 petty song.
One of the top 10 greatest guitar solos of all time.
I still remember watching the premiere of this video on MTV back in the day. It was my first introduction to the band, and I loved it on first listen. So glad to see the love for this song and band in 2024. Thanks for the reaction, guys!
My favorite Tom Petty song..Thank you.
“I need to know” and “jammin me” are his two best songs imo
Yes! I need to know!
Man you can't go wrong with Tom Petty! One of my favorite songs by him!
This was on *heavy* rotation in the early MTV days. Takes me back to high school.
One of my favorite Tom Petty songs… in my top five favorites for sure
You need to watch the video "I still love you" from Kiss Unplugged
My fave Tom song, love the deep guitar vibe and the lyrics are spot on!
This song is very humbling when you realize it's being sung TO YOU , as I feel very lucky that my wife has been singing it to me for 40 years , and I'm grateful every time she sings
RIP Tom and Howie💔
Tom Petty is the greatest! RIP Tom
Thank y'all for doing this one, one of my all-time favorite Petty tunes, and you're right it's all about that vibe!
Been waiting. One of Petty's best songs.
Best breakup song ever!
The great Mike Campbell on that beautiful Gibson guitar 🎸, and Benmont Tench on the catchy keyboard riff. ✌🏼😎🇺🇸
I have always loved this song.
My favorite TP&TH song, and among the first music videos I remember seeing on MTV. So happy you checked it out!
I still miss Tom Petty. I'd give anything to go back and spend some time when this song was new.
"It'll All Work Out" is my absolute favorite Petty song followed closely by "Saving Grace". Both well-worth a listen.
Tom was so talented, even was in "The Postman" movie!! RIP Tom!!
My very favorite Tom Petty song. He was taken from us way, way too soon. RIP.
This was always my favorite Tom Petty songs to sing karaoke to.
Yes Tom Petty much missed great musician and this is a great track.
Im glad you finally did this song. This song and video was the one that got me into Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.
Being Gen X and hearing this on radio....you young ones radio is that device in your car that can play music. This my favorite Tom Petty song as it touches those that give all to someone but it wasn't enough. Nonetheless, good luck finding someone that loves you as much as I. 🤘
This is my favorite Tom Petty song. Great choice!
Prince, Tom Petty, Steve Winwood, Jeff Lynne, more - "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" | 2004 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction for George Harrison. Tremendous guitar solo by Prince at the end of the video.
Love this song and the music video. Thanks for reacting to this one!
I remember watching this on Friday Night Videos before MTV came out..god I'm old
MTV existed by the time this came out, but it's availability took awhile to spread. We got lucky (pun intended) where I lived to have it on day one in August 1981, but it was January 1983 before everyone had it.
I remember waking up early one morning in April of 83 after an all-night party and seeing this on MTV and thinking wow!!!! What am I watching??? I just know I love it!!
This song came out a few weeks after I had started my own "charts" in early Fall, 1982. It peaked at #2 (I believe blocked by Culture Club). Going by memory, lol. GREAT song, and helped inspire me to keep my chart going. Thanks!!🥳❤️👍🏾🎸
Hell ya! You Got Lucky is an overlooked classic!
I remember watching this video on MTV as a kid, so Mad Max. And the song, very Dark for him. That mellow guitar, nothing fancy just pure art. Loved it. I loved that the whole band was in the video together as a road gang together, that was so cool.
Glad to see you guys again. Tom is one artist I will listen song for song.
Probably one of my favorites from him. That synth part when all the instruments drop out....gives me some kind of vibe I can't explain.
I loved this video when it first came out on MTV. Great song, great sci-fi type video.
My favorite video and song from Tom and the boys. Definite post apocalyptic dystopian Mad Max feel to the video. Glad you two enjoyed it.
I absolutely love this song. I was the perfect age when this video came out to have watched it a million times.
My favorite Tom Petty song! But I never saw the video. That was quite an experience in itself.
Yeah!!!
This is my favorite song of theirs!
Probably the most underrated rock artist. R.I.P. Tom Petty
I vividly remember the world premiere of this video on MTV. You couldn't have pulled me away for all the money in the world. I was completely obsessed with Tom Petty. I think I was about 8 when this came out
Don't think I've heard this song since high school. It's a great track, too, so thanks for bringing back some awesome Petty vibes!
This was one of the first videos on MTV! I loved it!!!!
rob, it's really good to see you, I hope that you're doing well. One step at a time my friend. Hello Amber!
