- Growing passionfruit is easy and requires minimal attention. To grow like a professional, use a trellis to promote the vertical height of the vine.
A trellis is cheap and easy to setup. The results will reward you for years to come. Grafted vines are most common, but any vine will work.

As a kid we used to take out a little of the passion fruit and then top it up with condensed mild.. Heavenly!!

Great video! I love passionfruit, and was very happy when we moved from Queensland to Victoria in 1968 to find that this tropical plant would grow there. And we had a Nelly Kelly vine in each house we ever lived in while we were in Victoria. I am not certain, but I think the grafting is needed because of the cold, but it could well be for disease resistance too. In Queensland I can't recall ever seeing grafted passionfruit for sale. I'm now in the Philippines, and was shocked to find that (at least in Laguna province anyway) nobody knows what passionfruit are! I've got half a dozen growing on a home-made arched trellis. I made it with 2 x 8' lengths of 2" weldmesh joined end to end. I then secured one end to the ground with tent pegs. I then brought the other end to within about 5' of the other, and secured it with tent pegs too. Then I hammered some pipes into the ground at the corners and wired them to the arch to hold it upright. The passionfruit love it!!
Something I don't think you mentioned in the video is that passionfruit are a short lived plant. Usually you get no more than five or six years from them, so it's a great idea to plant a new one close by every three years or so. That way when the older plant dies, the newer plant is already mature, ensuring a continuous crop.

i have had some issues with seedling vines (flowers drop, fruit rots, plant stunts in size etc) due to my windy and cold southerlys. i now love the grafted vine- i usually get 4-5yrs from a good vine.

Thanks for the video. Honestly it is the first time I see the passion fruit being put into a root stock. They can generally be propagated via cuttings (at least that is how I propagated them). And they grow absolutely huge this way as well. The passion fruit vine has a life span of 3-4 years on average. So when you notice that your passion vine loses vigor cut a nice looking branch and put it into a pot mix. It will root in about a week. After that you can plant it and it will develop in the same exact tree.

this is the best performing vine i have ever grown. same lifespan . im in a coastal area that gets some cold wind, which seems to be harsh on seedlings . some vines drop flowers, others stay stunted- which is why i tried grafted this time.

CaseHeads G i prune back every 2 yrs. just the old woody branches. a quick fertilize at the same time too, usually in winter/spring.

I'm going to attempt to grow this in the UK. An old neighbour used to have one that grew up and over our adjoining fence and we had delicious free passion fruits for a couple of years. The got nowhere near as big as these though! Really hoping I can get them to thrive. Great tips, thank you!

I live in USA central California and it pretty hot here and it doesn't seem to grow very well here during the hot July summer month so if I grow it then I have to put a screen shade over it and i love your plant thanks for sharing 🙏😍👍😘😀❤❤

In Nicaragua we boil the pulp then blend it, strain it and add water and sugar its delicious and you'll get more juice and no waste 😋😋😋, i planted two vines last week its about 3 ft tall and already flowering and have one fruit, i live in south texas and the tag said its cold hardy so wish me luck 🙏
Alot easier to grow by far than other vine varieties dont know why more people aren't growing them they work great as a privacy hedge too!

Wow, looks amazing. I’m trying in England of all places. Grafting a purple passion fruits onto P. Caerulea root stock and also growing p. Incarnata and P. Mollisima (other Passion flower species that can handle colder temps and also have great tasting fruit). I’m starting them indoors under led lights till we hit May then they will shift outdoors for summer when it’s nice and warm. Hope I get some fruit this year.

you are behind the 8 ball with cold weather, but your persistence will bear fruit eventually (pardon my bad pun). i wish you the best, and ask you keep us updated if possible.

Thanks. Just built two wooden trellises against the fence. Will probably build another as well. I have taken some cuttings of an older Caerulea that I’m trying to root. If that succeeds I will attempt to graft them to my Ecuadorean edulis (yellow) and also my English store edulis variety (purple). The seedlings I’ve got are doing well. P. Alata and P. Molissima are both over a meter tall in the conservatory and will cut back and force some side branches soon.
I have 6 edible fruiting species and 2 ornamentals (I’m not counting P. caerulea as aparently they don’t taste great) fingers crossed. All looking very healthy so far.
How did you get on. I have loads of plants in pots. Not sure if they will survive winter outdoor
CotW, you are ambitious. Three years later, what are your results? I am growing P. Incarnata and P. Ceruella (sp) as host plants for the Gulf Fritillary butterfly. The Longwing Zebra butterfly also lays eggs on PF vines but is uncommon in my area.
oh my God!!!!! What a beautiful fruits you have. I also have passion fruits in my backyard but the fruits are medium in size and lighter in colour also some of the small fruits are turning purple with dry and light yellow colour pulp. Please give me some tips how to make them full of beautiful juicy pulp. Thanks

i prepared the soil with compost/manure before planting, and used a grafted plant.
you may need to introduce some extra minerals into your soil or prune back your vine until it recovers.
passionfruit either loves it spot or hates it. i have tried 4 different vines before i found this one.

I grew mine on a wire pergola. They are very good for shade and they attract several birds. The fruit hang down between the wires.
I wonder if any growers have issues w/rats.
A fruit that size will cost at least $2, probably $3, here in Canada. I'm going to try to grow them in containers that I bring inside for the winter.

When I was live in Florida I planted passion fruit they grown well but iguana ate all the new plants

Your passion fruit looks healthy and productive. I am envy. My black variety passion fruit vine looks health with luscious leavas and lots of flowers but they don't form fruits. They last for a couple of days then turn a yellow and drop.Do you have any ideas why that happens?

your problem is common. it can be a few things- soil imbalance (fertilizers, pH), cold weather shocks the plant, or wrong plant for that area. some people say its pollination (sometimes need a second plant).
after 10yrs of trying different vines, this one performed the best in my old soil and windy yard. always self pollinates.

you can also pollinate the flowers yourself...give your plant extra help....good luck.

Thank you. If you boil the shell in one cup water, you drink that at night and will help you to sleep better. You can eat the inside of the shell after boiling it too.

How could people dislike this video, what is there to dislike? Anyway I am in Brisbane and 2 of my 3 vines are smashed by grasshoppers or possums (I assume) as the new growth is always eaten and the vine never grows. My other vine has grown well because it is under a carport and I see it everyday and keep an eye on it. Do you have any pest problems or anti pest tactics? Great video by the way glad I found you. 😀
i have never used any insecticide chemicals or methods yet. the fruit are never attacked by bugs or wildlife. however the foliage may be sensitive to sap eaters... i would recommend spraying a homemade concoction of chilli powder and nicotine (i will upload vid soon) and/or hanging some fine nets to deter the larger pests.
you will have different results as you are up north and im down in sydney.

I’ve been growing passion fruit in Hawaii for over ten years, and have figured out the secret. When the vines are new in the ground, little caterpillars eat the new growth to the point where the whole plant dies. Every day go look at each leaf, including the undersides, and wipe off any little black spots/caterpillars. Once the vine is tall and strong enough, you can stop caterpillar hunting.
L Mo have you ever tried BT for the caterpillars it’s a bacteria that is very effective against caterpillars. Cheers

Can you tell me why my passionfruit‘s fall off before they change colour. they are as big as cricket balls but they never seem to ripen. This is the second crop that we have had from our vine.
A few years back I noticed some passionflower vines that had sprouted out near my fruit orchard. They freeze to the ground each winter but then come back in the spring. They make lots of small fruit (a little larger than a golf ball) but I haven't researched to see if the local varieties are all safe to eat.
hi. passionfruit isnt a fan of cold frosty climate and get stunted, hence why i grow grafted in my windy coastline. i assume if they are getting colour, they might be ok BUT...
in Sydney we have wild (white) passionfruit that grows to golfball size, it has traces of cyanide poison. Unripe fruit may cause nausea and vomiting too.

i bought a grafted red Nellie Kelly passionfruit and the label says it grows 3 metres wide. I'm trying to work out where to plant it, but yours looks like it has well and truly gone over 3 metres wide - is that accurate? I don't want to plant it allowing for only 3 metres if it is going to grow way more!

Hi i have a new Passionfruit vine that is about 6 months old now, it is starting to flower but it is dropping a lot of its flowers before they pollinate, i have done a few flowers
with a small artists brush and they have turned into fruit and are growing well, now is this normal for a young plant, i went to a fruit nursery today and bought another plant
A Panama Red hoping that they cross pollinate to help both plants. i would love to here your thought's on this.

I purchased a passion fruit for $4 here in Pennsylvania and saved the seeds for growing, and every one of them it seems has sprouted. Although it's not grafted will I still be able to harvest fruit eventually from these plants in my zone 6B Garden?
I think my neighbors would complain about the screws or bolts sticking out on their side of the fence, even if i use flat bolt heads.

we produce strong and elastic polyester/nylon line, it is good for trellis, do you have interest? It is cheap and not rust.
I've bought grafted passionfruit and they always died. I've gone back to plain old passionfruit seeds since then and apart from 1 man cutting the vine and another cutting it with a brush cutter, the next problem I have is possums. Fair dinkum it drives me mad. I should use 'poss off' on the men lol

One plant will work, they live for about 7 years, two plants will cover trellis or fence faster and double the fruit,also hand pollinate, bad news they hate cold, must cover or will die.

I've had three passion fruit plants for a couple of years and they were doing great (no fruit though, probably because they are in pots, but I don't mind), but we've had our worst winter this year and they really suffered. They are still alive, but I was afraid of pruning them (I'm a newbie). Now that the weather is finally warm and sunny again (18°-28°C daily) they've put out some new leaves and few flowers, but they are still struggling. Is it too late to prune them? Is there anything else I can do to get my full, lush plants back?

What a wonderful plant! How deep is the soil you’ve planted this in? I’m only able to use a planter box/pot
this one is about a foot 30cm deep, i had originally planted it 5inches 12cm and the tap root got deeper.
i would recommend a deep pot (larger the better) to keep the roots free and the soil warm. stick your finger in the pot daily and check the moisture content. dont under-water or over-water... its a very picky plant in pots.

I'm in Southern California. I had two different Passiflora species growing in pots. I was surprised that the Gulf Frits didn't want anything to do with my P. edulis 'Frederick'. They only wanted to eat the P. caerulea.

I had that trouble too at first , found that when ants got to flower would not bear fruit afterwards . I sprayed next season with olive oil and dish washing soap on leaves where ants would be and at base now have non stop passion fruits
my passion fruit trees are 8 months old and there is no fruit yet. how long does it take to bear fruits? do i need to trim the leaves? TQ.
i think i mention that it takes about 2 years (1 if youre lucky). it depends on your plant type.
dont touch the leaves, they fall off by themselves. just prune 50% branches every 2 years.

i live in zone 4/5 Sydney coast (us 10/11) which is windy cold towards autumn sometimes.

Can I ask what fertiliser is best? I have the exact same passion fruit (mind you I’ve just planted it after being in a pot for 3 years because of renting) but i would like to help it grow big and strong like yours!
Passion fruit is good with compost though you can apply NPK, UREA, CAN but you will have to be careful because that can give you leaves instead of fruits but click

This might be a dumb question but how long does the actual main stem take to get thick and strong? Mine is only like 2cm thick and my cat likes to sleep next to it I'm worried it'll snap.
good question. that vine in the video got to full size in 3 years.
the root section grows at a great pace, but the graft takes a long while to fuse and expand. i would say its delicate for a year, doesnt like root disruption either. a stake with some ties might help.
