Dont get me wrong, great job lol just food for thougjt next time. I do believe getting a retired carpet installer like myself to come out and seam it up or buy a seam iron, they're cheap, and some rolls of seam tape, also cheap, you will be happy with the strength and beauty of the seam plus the instant weld of it as it cools.

@@RCINFORMER awesome. Also in winter with rain and so? I suppose no snow or ice at least. But “tons” of sun… I almost forgot to tell something about the COWS 🐄!! Do you really plan to let them walk over? I hope they have big shoes! 😁😬😬😬😬😱
@@ficosk8 We plan to fence them off so they cant walk on the runway. For now, this test runway is giving us an idea what would happen if the cows get past the fence. So far they don't really damage the runway at all:) It has survived the cow challenge:)
@@RCINFORMER wow!!!!!!! That’s impressive! That’s probably around 150-250kg or max 500 pounds of weight on each step. Good material and the soil is probably hard enough. Maybe if it’s soaked in water it could get critical. Super work then 👍🏼 👍🏼
I’m glad you guys are getting your own field terrific Buddy. I wonder if you had a heavy roller to go over the ground before you the product down would that help prep the ground before hand just a thought something to ponder on I hope everything turns out well Buddy you keep flying them keep filming and we’ll keep watching. Take care.
We plan to prep the entire 300 ft area before putting down the final runway. This is just a test runway to see if the glue joint works & also see if everything holds up over time.
SOL 43 - little green men land to help out :). Looking good Rich, it's great to have friends n family to help with the work. I imagine the experimental phase is quite done yet. I hope that everything goes well with the big runway. AirHammer out!!
I was wondering if someone would understand that reference:) Nicely done! I actually used the same font! There's nothing there, & kinda desolate right now. It was day one & kinda reminded me of that aspect of the movie. The terraforming has begun:)
You can use sand to use as a top dressing for where the fabric is to be laid. The sand will fill in any low spots and can be smoothed easily. You can also use a heavy roller over the fabric to flatten some of the bumps from the grass underneath. Just putting fabric over grass will always results in an uneven surface. Using sand and rollers is how golf courses keep their putting greens so smooth.
Like in the video, I wanted to just put on grass & try it. When the grass dies, we will fold it over & rake/level underneath. This was to test the glue joints on a small version before we commit to a larger version of the runway:)
So, what would be the cost if the material were not donated? Impressed with the problem solving concerning the seam. Hope the runway serves you well and lasts a long time.
fyi , i put down big rubber belts from PPG and it was great until the ants came. billions x1000, rolled it up and 8 loads of gravel later and a layer of sand . rolled out belts and drove our trucks around it to pack it down. been fine since
Awesome. I have seen that stuff on many new cars. However, your goal was that nobody has to cut the grass? It seems the low grass works just the same .
Correct! However, we will have both grass & hard surface here. We don't want to do too much prep work or spend any $ pepping the ground for the runway right now until the building is built. The equipment needed to build the building will probably destroy any runway we make. So once the building is done, we will bring in equipment to flatten the ground and install a permanent hard surface with this material and a really well prepped grass runway. The hard surface will be 300', the grass will be 500'
I work covering large ash ponds with geo tec fabrics and poly vinyl covers for power plant land field. If you did not know there is a machine made to sew geo fabrics together and a heat machines to join vinyl fabrics together. To get information look up companies that instal covers for industrial land fills all kinds of different methods and materials. The main thing is they have all the engineering work done and have tried and true methods of joining materials.😁😁😁🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Hi, Rich. Ive been watching youre videos for years and its awesome that you have partnered with Wesley. I hevae been looking for something for our field because we are a grass field and big issues with EDFs, even with the grass cut short. I have been looking at different options and of of course looking at cost. I see you got lucky with having the materials donated. I have been looking on the Milliken website but am a little confused as to what it is listed under. Do you know exactly what Milliken calls it and also do do you have any idea or ballpark figure of the cost per foot or roll. Any help will be appreciated.
I'm not sure it's listed. Milliken was disposing of it, so Pat Hartness at triple tree took it in and stored it. You can contact Pat regarding the material.
@jimvalim1567 Great question! We are not sure if the glue joint would work on a large runway or hold up to time & the elements. We are also getting ready to pour cement for a building, and the trucks needed to build the building would have to drive over the runway area. Since we want to do some flying now, it made sense to build a smaller test runway to find out what works & what doesn't. We plan to roll this up later & use it as a perpendicular runway in the future:)
We may in the future. This material was offered to me to use by Triple Tree & it's nice material. It should make for a nice takeoff & landing surface. It's smooth like asphalt, & should protect airplanes during wing scrapes and flip overs. It does not leave that black rash on the models like geotextile.
Definitely a big time consuming group effort...i enjoy my hand toss belly landers ...but if this works for many years without issues it definitely good for rc clubs.
Not another commercal, its an acknowledgment. I added this on my own because Milliken donated the material to the Triple Tree Aerodrome for use at R/C fields. This is why I also acknowledged Pat Hartness & the Triple Tree Aerodrome for their donation as well. I thought the acknowledgment on my part was appropriate since they were kind enough to donate to our hobby:)
Awesome Congratulations. You guys are the best.

Use carpet seam tape. It goes underneath and you use a iron to heat it up to make a permanent hot glue seam.
I wonder if that gorilla glue would be good for building and repairing foam planes?
Possibly, I may try it out.
