Dick Enberg and Hot Rod Hundley calling the game.
Hot Rod Hundley worked for CBS, TVS and the Phoenix Suns in the early 1970s. He went on to be the radio-tv voice of the New Orleans and Utah Jazz for 35 years.
    They are both missed. RIP.

UCLA's first loss since January 23, 1971 which was against Notre Dame. Just like in football, Notre Dame was the bookend of the longest unbeaten streak in college basketball.

I was 12 years old at the time and I remember watching that game, I grew up a UCLA fan and I used to think nobody could beat them, that's just way I used to think. I remember they had a 70-59 lead and I thought that the UCLA 88 games winning streak will continue but when Dwight Clay hit that jumper from the corner to give Notre Dame the lead 71-70 I thought UCLA could finally lose, unfortunately they did, it's painful when they lost and it still is to this day. But you have to give Norte Dame credit because they was a good team also so it wasn't no shame losing to them but it's also proved when UCLA lost to North Carolina State in the final 4 that they wasn't invincible.

Eddie Einhorn and Digger Phelps had some back room deals, whereby on signal from Einhorn, Phelps would blow up at the refs, even if it meant getting a technical foul. It was to keep the viewers engaged.

Well, this video sure captured all the highlights of that game -- from an L.A. perspective. The Bruins up by about 10 all the way. A few little details of the final minutes left off, but so what? UCLA never lets leads like that get away from 'em! :)

Being a senior undefeated in college following two undefeated years in high school, he had impossibly high standards for his sense of satisfaction. As thrilling as it was for me to see this win (I was 15), and as much as I still enjoy watching replays of this historic game, I feel sorry for Bill. He is so much like many friends I’ve had that I’ve always thought of him as being like a friend. My friendly advice to Bill Walton would be: forgive yourself for a few minutes of misfortune in the game. Take stock of your myriad accomplishments.

@@blablablablabla3959I saw he seeth about 25 years ago in a interview. I was sad and impressed by his reaction. As a Chicago Irish raised kid, UCLA wasn't the enemy. That was USC. I always think he rushed the shot at end. His shoulders weren't squared. UCLA lost 2 more games in season then in Semis to Wolfpack. 26-4 is great season for every team. Except for Bruins. They went 16-4 the rest of season. I think that's what Walton was mad about. He should have made shot and gone undefeated. Can't blame the guys intensity. Also Trogavich played in high school with Tim Stoddard who they lost to in Final four semis vs NC State. The 2 white bruiser from East Chicago Indiana won a Indiana State Title. They came to Chicago in Their Senior year and played a Chicago Public League Powerhouse and throttled them. Stoddard went on to pitch in MLB for Baltimore winning a World series ring. 6'7 relief guy. I think he is only 1 of 2 to play in Final Four and World Series. Only to win both. ❤Kenny Lofton was other.

Ara went totally off at the pep rally Friday night before the Saturday game. Irish guards played so much better then U.C.L.A.'s Notre Dame athletes live with regular students, have them as room mates too. School has no athletic dorms. I read in a book years later that Shumate woke up real early, got into the hall and screamed at the top of his lungs WAKE UP,it is Bruin Time. The whole dorm went crazy. Every year Phelps coached at N.D. he upset a #1 or #2 team,The year of the N.D. U.S.C Trojan Hotel Green jersey game, the whole Irish Marching band found out the Hotel Trojans were staying in about 30 miles away got to that hotel and played the victory march for three hours straight.

Walton's passing at 15:17 and 18:56 looks like previews of the Portland Trailblazers NBA title in 1977. The outlet pass to spark the fast break and the high post pass to the back door cutter. Those are what Walton did so well.

The coaching matches were told great by Packer and Enberg. They would both be working the officials from the start.

As an Indiana resident who was still in a state of euphoria over the first game, I watched that re-match, which started at 11:30 pm our time, as I recall. A nice predictable way to relax late at night by watching a Bruin scrimmage.

@rush__manWhat Phelps wanted was to have Ncaa stop screwing independent teams getting horrible seeds in the tournament. Him and Ciach Al were outspoken and paid for it in next decade. Irish went 26-2 and had to play a playing game. There were no seeds. I think it was them ,Marquette and another independent with Michigan in Midwest region. You had the 4th 5th 8th and 14th tanked teams in a 6 team region. No at large for Big 10, pac 8,Sec Acc. So only half top 25 made it. Maryland lost to Wolfpack 3 times by 2,2,1 28-3 didn't make tournament. Look up ncaa tournaments in 70s. It was pathetic.

It’s true that ND finished on an 11-0 run and Walton missed a potential game winner in the final seconds. However, Walton has spoken many times about the NC State game being the most painful loss of his entire basketball (not just college) career. This was a made for tv regular season game that was part of a home-and-home series. UCLA beat ND handily in the rematch the following Saturday.
How can you compare that to a 2OT national semifinal loss in which UCLA blew a late lead? Furthermore, it marked the end of Walton’s UCLA career. On top of that, it meant the end of UCLA’s streak of seven consecutive national championships. Adding to the disappointment, UCLA beat NC State by 18 earlier in the season. Not even close.

@@caesarfiorini1728 Ok, I’d like to see that. Check out his autobiography, Back From the Dead. He rips Tommy Curtis (mainly because he took playing time away from his best friend, Greg Lee) and goes on and on about the NC State game. To be honest, Curtis was instrumental in both losses, but Bill blames himself as well. It clearly haunts him to this day. Knowing Bill’s public persona, it’s not unusual for him to exaggerate and even contradict himself.
