two things: that weld mod has an extra feature you want to use with those batteries; hold control and start grinding, the block will 'pop' off, intact, ready to carry away... Also, now that you have batteries, a pair of event controllers, say at 75% and 90%{?} would cycle your hydro engines for you. Same with the o2h2.
Only works on friendly grids. You get a message that says something akin to "Cannot detach hostile grids." Apparently Digi was wise to the PVP aspect of that mod and put a stop to it before we could all exploit it as good engineers.
My guess for the ship flip was the dual landing gear in the rear causing phantom forces, it would explain the nose dip. Looking forward to further exploration of Mars
For future battery salvage, why not slap on a small button console on the block so if you do damage the cells you can still make the grid a ship and bring it back for repairs.
Grid Flip. Caused by aerodynamic physics mod. If "lift" is a thing, so is "drag" and those batteries have a whole lot of flat-plate drag area. I spent a career flying heavy lift & assault helos in the military and was able to reproduce the outcome in my own version to test the hypothesis. I flew a bunch of "sling loads" attached in various configurations. I even slung aerodynamic craft and experimented with using a parachute block as a drogue chute to maintain the load's longitudinal axis with the flight axis. Maybe not exactly perfect to RL but close enough for a game. If you want a real challenge, do that again and throw Digi's "Realistic Thrusters" mod on to boot! It'll give you a whole new level of concern for designing and piloting your atmospheric/space craft!

When you attach your aircraft to a static grid with a landing gear and convert grid to a ship, sometimes some clang happens. That's why you flipped over, I think. Just release and reattach.

Hey Kanajashi look at Escape from Mars episode 4 collecting batteries look at 38 minutes and 3 seconds pause the episode and you will find that there is a batteries in on the roof right in front of you
I don’t know if this is how the scraping mechanic works but I’m guessing the power cells get converted to scrap when they are removed from the grid build queue as you’re grinding it so all you would need to do is grind the batteries with a full inventory. That way the components won’t be removed from the grid and the power cells will remain as power cells.
I know this is six months ago, so I'm leaving this for anyone who didn't know this already. By selecting your grabbing pads (mag plates, landing gear, etc for holding onto salvage) and disabling "use for parking" on ALL of those, they will ignore the P key if you accidentally press it. Just make sure not to assign them to the hotbar with your actual landing gear, lock with the hotkey, and press P or you'll be annoyingly stuck in place. Also by disabling "unsupported stations" in the world's settings will dynamically make the batteries into ships
I'm not sure what they're up against when they get off Mars. Getting off a planet is pretty easy actually. All you need is a small battery, a seat, an oxygen tank and hydrogen tank. Then you can go hundreds of kilometers in space. Unless you're in a no jet pack scenario. Such as Frostbite. Then there's no reason to anyway. There's no asteroids or planets. You can add them but you have to go into creative mode and turn on experimental.

You went to a lot of trouble grinding and moving batteries and material to your new base. Why didn't you just take over and move in? Prebuilt hangers and buildings with solar panels and working batteries.
Gyro was on but then you flicked it off and that caused a flip due to back weight on the back being greater from the batteries. Why did you turn off gyro?
Oh, you guys missed the advanced grinder mod, so you could just ctrl + grind to detach the block instead of grind to hack. At least for transport, and the hacking mod if you don't want to actually grind on base
why not make a fortified wall ... and a few buildings interior ... say storage manufacturing power and living ... with some free space and parking inside the compound of the fence
Why didnt you bring BOTH vehicles use the rover for base destruction and battery transport and the airship to move them and place them and carry the extra

It doesn't work, they still get scrapped the same way components in a damaged block do.

Phantom forces come from piston and rotor joints. I think he's using the aerodynamics mod, and the battery is creating drag below the center of mass.
