    This is an excellent tool for redressing or for final dressing of an initial fret installation. I have used it on many guitars and also recommended it to others, who have never reported a problem. The single improvement which can be made relates to the abrasives used. I move on to several grades of Micromesh to ensure the frets are really smooth and shiny. This product needs a good independent review. The Thomas-Ginex posting is accurate BUT is by the manufacturer. Edwin's review is OK, but is weakened because a) he sands with the product in a random way b) he uses other tols late on in the process. b) is fine, and I do that also, BUT, it means it is no longer a test of the T-G system, just someone doing a fret dress using T-G as part of the process.

      Exactly the same thing I just said above. I've refretted maybe 20 guitars.....it's great to get a fine finish on the frets or take out minor fret marks.....that's it.....you will never get a major fret job expertly level. I do like it for a final sanding with the strings on after the set up.

    The only thing this is good for is a fine tune. Been using one for years. It will not do a good leveling if you need to take more then a sliver off the frets. I use it mostly to smooth out the frets with different grade sand papers. It's great for that. You really need a long sanding block to get the frets properly leveled.

      Definitely get your point on leveling, a beam is best however the crowning part is very clever but simple. Almost no need for a fret file other than rounding the ends. Man this would make fret maintance way more fast and easy I think I will get one.

      +Jhazzie Girl Fret Board Oil is for reconditioning the fret board para hindi mag crack and shrink. Pag linis, I usually use "0000" steel wool, pero meron din daw other commercial products.

    Do it work? I have some trouble believing that the frets really get crowned with that method?

      They do, but not from first fret installation if considerable flatting is needed. If you are redressing OR you didn't need to do much flatting on an initial installation, they crown fine.

      It really works.the way th plate is shaped makes the metal pipe up an down over the frets w the abrasive pad and created a perfect oval shape with a perfect center each time.

    Does this kit really work?

    • @Edwin-E
      @Edwin-E  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just my personal opinion, I find it hard to use. Most of the time I just do the traditional fret file for crowning and straight wood for leveling. But that is just me, I am not a luthier.

      Yes.i use it on all my guitars.it works great and better than ruining a great guitar.this kit guards against complete ruin.

      That's how I initially felt about using a dremel and polishing compound versus hand polishing. The rotary tool yields the same results but much faster. Careful hands mandatory. Haven't tried the Thomas Ginex, but I made a tool inspired by it. Wood block with two half cylinders protruding from its bottom face. Excellent tool for rough crowning however I still go in and manually crown each fret to the fine line left by the marker. A tool like this is excellent for when some frets have a much wider land than the others due to being leveled down much more (though a high seated fret like that SHOULD be QC'd). It skips the top land because of the way the tool jumps up and down for each fret, allowing it to remove material without lowering the height of that fret. Any tool meant to fix your guitars can ruin them when in the wrong hands. Hammer and chisel built marble statues.

    you seriously did that with the strings on? LOL

    • @Edwin-E
      @Edwin-E  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, that is the instruction on the Thomas Ginex Kit to maintain the correct tension on string and make the neck straight. Please refer to their website to learn more. www.fretrefinishing.com/

      yep its designed to be used under tension

    Why not just remove the strings, and replace them when you're done with fresh ones? Seems like alot of hassle to dress your freta and keep your old strings

    • @Edwin-E
      @Edwin-E  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think the purpose of this is to keep the neck straight by maintaining the string tension.

    • @lamborn55
      @lamborn55 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think the idea is to level under tension, not so much to save the strings. They don't seem to make this very clear, but I've seen other methods that fall under that category and this seems like it may be one.

    • @robertnewell5057
      @robertnewell5057 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not so. I have used this kit on many guitars with perfect success. It is not, however, a substitute for proper fingerboard truing and initial fret leveling and crowning. It is great for final dressing or for re-dressing

    Take the strings off dude!!! Spending time and money on fileing fret ....buy new strings man those ones arw so used there turning black lol

    • @Edwin-E
      @Edwin-E  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The reason why I did not remove the strings was part of the procedure to use string tension to straighten the neck. After leveling the frets, I did replaced the strings. Better not to change the strings while leveling because the tools scraped on the strings as well and will damage the new strings if installed earlier.

    • @Edwin-E

      I think I prefer the conventional way. Sanding with straight block, then crowning manually by file, or if you have a crowing tool, the better.
