Hi from Sydney Australia. I've owned this exact machine for just over 3 months now. I find it brilliant with ease of use, speed, taste and reliability. Once it is set up to your liking you are good to go. Today it warned I needed to descale. The process was about 30 minutes and everything was automated. I chose the white colour as it best suits my kitchen décor. FYI, I mainly make late and the odd cappuccino so the milk frother wand was a must have for me. If money is no concern I highly recommend. Cheers!
Yes, at 1.2k price point I would highly recommended, too. I mean - it costs the same purchasing about 399 Caffe Lattes at Starbucks. Hmmm... maybe I should get something more reasonably priced so I can afford the coffee beans and water to delight in the coffee.
“so I can afford”
If you can’t afford it you can’t afford it… each their own
I've been using instant coffee 😩. This is new to me. Love simplicity and esthetic of this machine. Thank you for the review. Luv u 🇨🇦 ❤
Thank you! We just got our machine and the manual was confusing. This is so unbelievably helpful.
This has been extremely helpful. Very informative. Yes I think this will be the right appliance for me
Thanks so much for this review very helpful!! ❤
Hey, this video helped us a lot with our final purchasing decision, there is one thing we couldn't figure out; we already customized all of the 3 coffee types but in long coffee type the coffee pours in breaks. When I watch your video, I see it's not the usual case, could you tell, how I could fix this?
I have one of these in white, the coffee tastes good and it's super easy to use and doesn't get coffee grounds everywhere making a mess, when this came out I was attracted to it rightaway, I don't regret my purchase and I like watching my wife prepare my coffee, it's super fun, there were other machines I considered both were out of Australia there was no warranty on it and my wife didn't like the look of one other machine, but she liked the look of this one, I think overall it is also very economical and solid, I don't really get coffee shop coffee's a lot maybe once in a while like maybe once a year if I'm stuck outside and I have no way of getting a coffee, these days I'm not stuck outside and I'm working from home so this is perfect for me and even if I was working outside and I needed a takeaway coffee this would be perfect for that too! Totally impressed! :) by the way to the creator of this video it would be great if you could have showed what pressing each button does like a close up of the buttons and pressing it and what comes out, it would be very helpful, thanks!
@@tmr3927 something is wrong with the sensor that tells how much coffee grounds are in the waste coffee grounds basket, after every extraction when I turn it off and back on the indicator light comes on that the waste coffee grounds basket is full and I have to empty it after each extraction which is a pain, also the long shot extraction meaning the amount of coffee/water mixture is 1/5 lesser than before when I purchased it
Just got mine! Thinking if its a long use since I don't see much people review about this machine. Did you fix it? Thanks
@@cindy-jz8fw warranty fixed it easily but I feel there should be a video explaining how to deal with sensor issues etc... If it was so easy to fix
I'm debating between the Smeg (no wand) and the Jura ENA 4. Which would you recommend?
Bought the floor model of this for only $200. Works great and love the taste of the coffee!
is the 2nd button a double espresso
Nice review thank you! Second option means lighter taste ? And whats suites best with this machine soft or hard water
Yes it is lighter...weird we thought also! Never use hard water on any machine. Depending on where you live, tap water is usually ok.
gorgeous crema!!!
I thought you said Camera, so I got excited... Then I realized you said crema... - The Camera Man
But YES You're right! It is a gorgeous crema!
I’ve just converted to one of these having used nespresso for many years. It is great although I need to programme the pours
What are the default pour sizes for ristretto, espresso and long coffee? The long coffee seems only abouy 220ml - not enough to fill a mug. Can I just program it to be longer?
Great video! How does the machines get rid of the spent grounds/pucks between drinks?
Great video, and so glad I've found your store!
Unrelated, what kind of watch are you wearing? Looks great!
@@ecscoffeeinc Thanks! Definitely looked like a Seamaster:)
Are you expecting any more inventory on this item in the near future?
@@SentinelIXK We get inventory weekly. Best bet is to hit up our product page and click notify me. As soon as they are in, we will update automatically and you will get an email. Thanks for thinking of us.
What does the burr area look like? Does it stop when the beans are too big? My Delonghi does that. So I have to buy small beans by brand. Limits what I can buy. How big is the water reserve?
All of the specs can be found on our website. ecscoffee.com/collections/automatic-espresso-machines/products/smeg-super-automatic-espresso-machine-with-steam-wand-matte-red. As for bean size, we have never had that issue.
Thanks for the video. However, I'm still not sure what soft, medium, hard water is referred to as? Are you talking about "Hard Water" as in tab water with a lot of lime in it, and soft water as in using a water softener which uses salt to soften the water throughout the house? (not sure what medium water is). What does Reverse Osmosis, or purified bottled water consider as?
When you say “light” in the ristreto. You were using regular or light mode?
Great review. Curious if you have an updated perspective? Is it worth the buy?
Yes but look at the Jura Ena 4 and the Philips 4300, Delonghi Evo to compare. We have videos on each.
Hi, I just purchased the machine, neither the coffee nor the water comes out. everytime I press a coffee/nespresso button, it starts then there are two sounds ringing and all 4 buttons are flashing at the same time then nothing comes out
Great review, really helpful. I just bought this machine, does turning the grinder change the taste of the coffee/make it stronger etc? Thanks.
It will have an affect. The finer the grind, theoretically will slow the water down and give you a better espresso vs a coarser grind. It depends on the beverage you want. But the difference is subtle.
@@tmr3927 I do. Look at the Philips 3200, 4300 and the Delonghi Evo to compare
Hello! I'm from Mexico, great video. My machine does not seem to make that much foam on top of the coffee, what con it be?
Hi Monica!
We would suggest trying different beans. Maybe something with robusta :)
Happy brewing!
I've a Dehlonghi but it's pretty noisy. This one seems more quiet. What's your opinion?
Which automatic machine brews the hottest coffee? Would you please also advise if espresso made in Smeg has a lighter/stronger taste than made in a simple stovetop Moka pot? Thank you!
th-cam.com/video/lj_gtaUDKqM/w-d-xo.html its a bit older but it talks to temp. As for Smeg vs Moka pot. The mokapot would be more intense
Is there a similar machine but with a milk reservoir? I really love cappuccinos.
Great video. Very informative. I have just bought one of these and have a question. When making a long coffee, mine cuts on and off several time during the process (not just the infusion). Has anyone else experienced this as the one you reviewed doesn't appear to do this? Thanks.
Yeah I saw mine do this earlier today, not sure why? I've only just had my machine running for 2x days
I have seems similar problem , when i do on orange option long coffe it pouring 4-5sec make a stop and pouring again, and like that all process till cup is full, but it take too long ... while on other options working smooth and without stopping.. maybe anyone know why or it should be like that ?
Yep mine does this. The long coffee on here was programmed so I need to try this myself
quick question, how do you clean the wand after each use to purge with the steam going everywhere? thanks!
We would suggest purging the steam wand into an empty frothing pitcher if you are concerned about the steam :)
Great review! Just got mine and very pleased with it, just an question if you know is the espresso function count as a single shot? As a bit confusing if the orange espresso button is single and white is double but seems like a single ?
i always brew with at least 15 bar so it's good it can do 19
Hi from China. There's a problem of my machine that when the power is on, the top LED keep flashing in sequence and the self-descaling process cannot start. Any ideas of the problem? Thank you so much.
I cannot get this machine to make a decent cup of coffee. For reference, I have been using an Aeropress for the past 2 years to make Americanos. I have changed the beans I use, have changed the grind level, have used filtered water. I prefer my coffee black and nothing I do is helping, the coffee almost seems to have a plasticky taste. Any tips?
Well that is not good! Aeropress will brew differently than these for sure so it will be hard to get an exact replica. Sounds like you need to run some water and coffee through the brewer a bit to get rid of the plastic taste. We have seen that in other lower cost items made oversees but not in the SMEG items at all. So that is surprising. Try rinsing out the brewer by accessing from the side of the machine..maybe let it soak. Same with the cold water tank. Then try again. Perhaps the other viewers can add more assistance
Very nice video. How many grams of beans are consumed each time?
Honestly not sure. There is no record or mention of it anywhere. Looks like about 10g at the max based on the brewer size. Not the larger one like Jura with 16g
I programmed my coffee like you did in the video so it dispenses more coffee but when I went to make a coffee again this afternoon it wasn’t programmed, it just went back to the normal dispensing amount. Did I do something wrong??
Hi Kayla!
What steps did you take to program the coffee maker? We would suggest trying to program again
I don't drink espresso, but my guests might. I was more interested in how well it made Americano coffee. Many machines just don't get the coffee hot enough for me and the Americano coffee seems to come out too bitter. Can you comment on maybe how well it can do these two things?
Many argue that Superautomatics do a lousy job with temperature vs manual style machines. I tend to agree if you really want hot hot hot espresso. A true Americano will have hot water added to a shot of espresso. You can accomplish this using the hot water button on the machine. However, Individual preferences are tough to comment on...best to go to a place like our stores to try it out to be honest.
For a nice latte with option should you choose? Espresso ? I’ve got the model with the frother
I’ve noticed that the coffee doesn’t change very much on mine when I change the grinder settings (fine grain vs gross grain): is it the same with yours?
Hi! We definitely notice a difference when changing grind sizes. Are you changing the grinder while it is running?
@@ecscoffeeinc sure, I change while grinding. Maybe it takes some coffees before you notice a difference as there are some old powder inside (you notice the difference immediately?)? Also, what should the difference be between minimum and maximum? Thank you
@@giuseppecirchettaph It can take up to 4 drinks to taste the change! The finer the grind the stronger the espresso :)
I m trying to decide if this machine is good for me but i am a bit confused as I like long and strong espresso. You are saying that the coffee is not very strong. Did you set up the grinder? I understand that are 5 levels and you can select to make a stronger coffee. Will that make a difference?
Adjusting the grind size as well as the strength will make the espresso stronger, but only up to a certain point. A machine that grinds up 16g per cup (like the jura) is able to make a strong long espresso than one that grinds up to 10-12g max like most other super automatic espresso machines
@@ecscoffeeinc thank you very much for your answer. As I can see Smeg grinds 8g per cup. Jura grinds 16g in one cup and with Smeg machine I have 2 make 2 espresso in the same cup to get the same result. Did I get it right?
At least in aus Smeg is selling it 50% off right now for some colours. Just bought it!
Does the hot water make good tea?
Some say it may not be hot enough as a kettle. I find it good enough. Depends how picky you are about tea
Is smeg products reliable in general?
Fairly reliable. Keep in mind the price point is not that of a Jura which is our favourite. This being a new unit so far is working well. Smeg is purchased first and foremost for aesthetics on their countertop lines. So if you really love the SMEG look, then go with it. For breadth of tech and overall features, there are other machines that I would go for in a superautomatic..the Jura Ena 4 if you do not need milk.
Thanks for the video. One point it will be really important to touch is how to change the grinding . Manual says to do that with the “when grinders are running”. Could you please explain / show how to do that?
Thanks !
Just run a shot of espresso and then turn the grinder settings as it grinds..you need beans passing through the grinder during adjustment to avoid damage.
@@ecscoffeeinc thanks so much for getting back to me.
So just to be clear, I have to adjust the grinding literally whilst I’m making my coffee right ?
The Smeg video on this says to either adjust the grind while the machine is grinding the beans or do it when the bean hopper is empty @@rodrigomarino9616
As someone who is no coffee aficionado, should I save up for this for my hope chest or get a nespresso machine?
I have a Nespresso Gran Latissima. My Beko bean to cup makes much better tasting coffee and it's identical to this Smeg aside from the branding.
The GE Cafe machine is extremely similar.
I have a Scott Slimissimo machine which has a few differences but clearly uses many of the same internals. The actual grinder mechanism for example is exactly the same. The Smeg appears to offer more varieties of coffee. To make it even more confusing I believe the Scott is made by Beko, so presumably the Smeg is too.
Is it normal that the frothy wand comes a bit of water before and after use? Cos it does mix with the milk everytime I steam it.
I let the steam on to check how much water and looks a bit more water coming out from it. And thinkinh bec of it it does make the milk liquidy. Is it fine?
Looking at buying this machine or a Nespresso but. It sure what’s better?
@@ecscoffeeinc thanks. That’s what I’m thinking. so do you recommend this machine or a different comparable in size machine?
Able to send to US? Is red color a true red?
Thx.
You have it in Nordstrom, not sure if is the exact same like this one, but i think they have two versions.
Great video! One question I can not find the answer to anywhere is: can you change the automatic turn off on this machine? It comes set at around 9-10 minutes to turn off after use, would like to make that longer. I see that on the other non automatic machines there is an option the change this setting but can’t find it anywhere for this machine. If anyone knows please comment. Thank you 🙏
Hi! It does not appear that you can adjust the eco mode on this machine :)
@@ecscoffeeinc Thank you. So I would definitely say this is a huge drawback for this machine, it only stays on for 10 minutes then runs about half a espresso cup of water in self cleaning. Hopefully this means it’s stays clean longer but also means you have to constantly remove it from under the counter to add water (water reservoir is at the very back of machine). Makes great espresso but would definitely rethinking this purchase due to this! Hope this helps
Hey I have a question. I really like the look of this one, but do you find that one better then the Phillips 5400? Because I think the Phillips is ugly AF. From your opinion, witch one is the better?
The Philips is easier to use and has more features as well as a larger brewer inside.
You should stir the drink?
It looks a weak brew for me and I can’t tell how much customisation you have to dial it in.. plus… the settings for espresso will be completely different for other brews so I can’t really see this machine being a master of multiple brews more like you will get it to make one decent beverage and that’s it.
It looks a good machine though..
Good machine but a bit of a stuff around sometimes. No override for the descale function when you really want to make a coffee first. I use rain water and it's not hard at all. The circuit and spout can clog up easily
Do you guys notice a whistle/ high pitch noise from the machine when it’s pouring? Also what temperature is the machine set at?
It looks almost exactly like my Beko espresso machine. Even the grinder's coarseness knob is the same, as well as how you set the desired amount to save. Except my Beko is noticeably cheaper at $220.
I have the Beko machine also. It is 100% badge engineering. The Smeg badged one being twice the price. Go for the Beko, great machine & price.
Hi i was really hoping if anyone can help me .
I bought this machine and it’s gives me all the errors.😢
Hi Shima!
If you are within your warranty we definitely recommend reaching out to Smeg!
I have this machine when i add ice to my black coffee it becomes too watery anyone can help me?
Hi! In this case we would recommend making coffee cubes! Make a few batches of espresso and freeze it in your ice cube tray :)
How much?
@@ecscoffeeinc l bought mine on sale for $700 in Australia this week l would not have been able to pay 1000 + for one
Call it smeg, call it tchibo, or beko, or whatever the plastic badge says. It is a generic machine which gets so many different brands attached to it. Amazing the price difference between them all for the exact same machine.
It's just a beko rebranded and costing 2-3x. Wished I knew before buying. Coffee is not bad, bit cold for my taste.
The process to descale is impossible with mine back to the shop again 1 /10 for me.
Ummm, he is wearing those jeans! 😳
Smeg, Affetto Tchibo are clones with big price differences.
Looks like a copy of Scott /Beko but expensive!

Replacing my Oracle touch with this. I just prefer one button touch coffee
Pump went out right after the warranty ran out. Not worth it
Production by DeLonghi
ok, its also made by beko (arcelik) and in germany sold under a white label brand of tchibo/Severin. i quess the design proces and parts manufacturing are group owned and each label adds it own innovations and looks to the models. its a great machine, been on the market for a couple of years. the touch version of beko does come with temperature settings. crema looks a bit foamy, but i like the richness and gentleness of the De'Longhi Magnifica more.
In Poland Tchibo version is 3 times cheaper than the Smeg one 1k PLN vs 3k PLN.
Neither the Tchibo nor the Severin have a model with the wand. Beko and Smeg do that and the Beko is much cheaper.
Smeg products are all overpriced. Nothing innovative but a family of rebadged products with a retro look.
@@_w_w_ that's not true, their high-end luxury appliances (hobs and ovens) are absolutely top-notch. But yeah, the """cheaper""" range (coffee machines, toasters, etc) is rebadged shit.
Broke after 11months. Super needy machine, dont buy!
@@helenwilson9732 Its a 1 year from the purchase date. You go through a third party to file a warranty claim takes about a month to get a replacement. I have noticed the replacement forces you to remove the brew mech about 1 time a week for a deep clean but it's still very messy. I'd rec going with a different brand.
This is sooo overpriced for what it is. Typical SMEG. Another white label product.
You can for example buy pretty much the exact machine from Tchibo, for less than €300 in Europe and for a similar price point in the USA. The only noticeable difference would be the styling of the plastic outer shell parts and the button arrangement.
Interesting price in the US. I am from Germany and have bought for 698€. This means it should cost around 788USD.
This appears to be exactly the same internals as the new GE Profile machine which lists for $799 US as well.
