I loved this book, stayed up way to late each night reading, and I agree, it is the best SF book I've ever read. The prose was incredible without being over done like, for example, Nevernight where it just overwhelmed the entire story and made it unreadable. Empire of Silence reminded me a bit of Dune at first. Even if you don't like sci-fi, this is a good place to start. The reason the narrator, Hadrian, giving away almost the entire ending worked is because this story is 100% about the journey and not the destination. The journey TO the destination is so huge and so incredible, that we don't care where it ends up, we, the reader want to know HOW it ends up there. One of my favorite series of all time. As for it's genre, it's space opera, which is more about story and less about the hard core sci-fi or military sci-fi that are about the weapons and ships and technology.

Agree with everything you said. Prose isn’t something I usually think about when reading. The fact that I was struck by how well written these books were, and the amount of highlighting I did really stands out to me. It’s not just well written, supremely digestible prose though, this is a great story. Can’t wait to hear your thoughts on the rest of the series. Maybe spoiler videos after this one? • @groofay
      @groofay ปีที่แล้ว

As far as fantasy/sci-fi that blurs the lines, I would recommend Ken Liu if you haven't read him already, he's stated multiple times that he deliberately does blur those lines. I'm most of the way through his short story collection "The Paper Menagerie and Other Stories," and even if you're not into short fiction, these stories read like novels and not a single one misses.

    • @Severian1

I just finished this book and I LOVED the framing narrative aspect. The whole time I was reading it, I felt this weight behind it of what he did, and made me think of this weary, almost heartbroken man sitting in his cell and trying to explain his life. I've only read the first book, so my feelings on that may change but I love it so far.

It is definitely a really good book. A weird and bold re-writing or a palimpsest on Herbert's Dune and Wolfe's Book of the New Sun. Ruocchio has absorbed the trophes, the storylines, the backdrops, and made them the weave of his own large tapestry. I mean the galactic Empire, the great houses, the gene manipulation, the religious creeds, the gladiatioral prowess from Herbert, the unreliable narrator, the ancient vobulcary, the time scale, even some nomenclatural nodding to Wolfe. Some may find the incessant loans disturbing, I felt like I was parttaking in a tradition. A good story, a delight.

So glad you have found Sun Eater! As Ruocchio himself labels it as Sci-Fantasy so you can call it that. I was amazed at how good of a writer he was for his age as well. Although I think because of the frame narrative people compare him to Rothfuss and I don't see it at all. His sentence structure and use of language is much closer to Robin Hobb in my opinion. I will echo what you have heard, the first book, while amazing, is by far the weakest overall. The leap in quality from book one to book two absolutely blew my mind. I have seen many people have different opinions on which of the next 4 is their favorite but it feels like its less than five out of one hundred that thinks Empire of Silence is the best. Ruocchio is a class act on top of it all. Cannot wait to hear what you think of Howling Dark!!

I know this book I would recommend here isn't like this one but I find it to be an amazing pallet cleanser. That is Rendezvous with Rama. Some Sci Fi is big, like Dune and Sun Eater. But then some is less about the characters and loud things happening and more about a quiet and utterly compelling situation. It is short and just hits a scratch for me in the best ways whenever I choose to go through it. But yes, it isn't heavy on story but on the situation. It is my favorite of the overly sciency sci-fi.

Just read the preview of the first 5 chapters of «Empire of Silence», were I caught:
Jadd: The Jaddite Faith from several Guy Gavriel Kay novels (GGK’s mix of Christian Trappings and the Sun Cults from Antiquity: Unsurprising given Ruocchio have stated himself as a fan of GGK, with signed books by him) & Jeddah, an Ancient Port City in Modern Day Saudi Arabia
Birth Vats for the Nobility: «Brave New World» by Aldous Huxley
Hadrian’s home planet of Delos: Greek Island, Holy Site for the worship of Apollo and Artemis and the Athenian-led Delian League which fought Sparta in the Peloponnesian War of the 5th Century BC + The Name of the Mega-Corporation running the parks in «Westworld»
Hadrian’s brother Crispin: The St. Crispin’s Day Speech from «Henry V»
The Alien Antagonists, the Cielcin: Ciel (French: Sky) + sin (Mr. Ruocchio is Catholic, alright! 😄)
Lothrian: Have some similar language structure as the Free City of Lorath from GRRM’s «ASOIAF» + Lotharingia/Lorraine in Modern Day France
Hadrian’s family name Marlowe and their Devil Symbol: Christopher Marlowe wrote «Doctor Faustus», about the eponymous scholar who make a pact with the devil Mephistopheles (+ a reversed color scheme of the Manchester United Devil Logo, given the Marlowes’ English Ancestry?)
The Mother of Hadrian’s Family Name, Kephalos: Cephalus, whom Socrates have a dialogue with in Plato’s «Republic». Read this cause of your recommendation, and unfortunately I didn't enjoy it very much. Having read "the name of the wind" recently, this felt like a poor scifi imitation.
I found the plot meandering and not very engaging until the last portion, the main character was vaguely likeable but annoyingly pretentious. Its hard to root for him when his likeable qualities are having normal moral principles for someone in the real world.
I felt the prose both didn't effectively paint a picture in my minds eye for me and sometimes went into these long poetic ramblings when there hadnt been anything profound enough to justify it. The romance didn't feel very romantic either.
I've heard the following books get better, but mostly from people who really liked the first one already so I'm not sure if I'll continue reading. I'd give it a 4 or 4.5/10. There were things I liked, but I thought I'd just thought I'd add a critical voice since everyone else seems to really enjoy it

Hadrian becomes stronger like Rand from WOT finally did. Thank goodness the plot started to became apparent 2/3rds of the way in. I almost DNF’d it…now I am ready to buckle up for Howling Dark!

I know i am the one out here but i gave this one a solid 3, maybe 3.5 if i am being generous. I felt the story was too unfocused and meandering for my tastes. But i felt this way about several popular modern fantasy like John Gwynne and Patrick Rithfuss.
I have seen this breed of story called science fantasy, ie the trapping of scifi but with more of a fantasy feel.
I haven't seen you talk about Dune which might you might like as its another sf that was a big influence on Roucchio and a similar blend of Scifi with a fantasy feel.

I think red rising and suneater are the two best scifi series I've read, and well see how they end then compare, as they both have 5 books out, and two more coming out. Both being 7 book series, well see how the next books are
I still prefer red rising, as of now

    • @MattsFantasyBookReviews

Yeah I still need to read the most recent Red Rising book. I didn't love the 2nd to last one so it kind of hurt my enthusiasm for the series.

@@MattsFantasyBookReviews on my first read I thought that iron gold was my favorite of the four (before dark age came out)
I'm doing my reread before lightbringer comes out, and I'm almost done with golden son, I'd forgotten how much happens in that book, and i liked morning star more so I'm very stoked about picking that up in a few days.
Dark age is phenomenal, honestly such an amazing installment. I know a lot of people had issues with iron gold, but pierce set the stage for the second trilogy (quartet now) with plot lines that I can't imagine having not been able to see, now that I've seen it
