  • Here is a initial look and and some info on the J&G sales spanish mauser chambered in 308 or 7.62x51 nato. The gun was covered in cosmoline of course. After an in depth cleaning, i found a crack in the main bolt body... i stopped work on this gun after that. im not going to replace the bolt, or shoot this gun. its not worth the $ i have in it. I spent about $50 on misc. parts already before i was able to find the Tiny hairline fracture. I would NOT recommend this gun. Purely from a $ standpoint. You can spen $50-60 more, and get a good working, and better looking spanish mauser.

    This is a type 2 1916 Mauser. A roller coaster sight is much more pronounced and obvious than this later type sight. Your stock is in great shape compared to some, mine included. Most are filthy dirty but cleanable, and have surface rust and pitting. Mine is in 7X57mm and LOADED with dried up Cosmoline which is expected. As for the bolt, you could drop another 100 and get another rifle with a good bolt. and some replacement parts.

  • @richard1165
    @richard1165 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Have you looked at the orginal rifles chambered for 7x57mm Mauser? I'm under the impression you'll have a better chance with those (as far as headspacing and bolt condition goes). From what it looks like, people are having the most issues with these rechambered 7.62x51mm versions, that entire re-arsenal in my opinion seems to have done more harm than good on these old war horses (almost as bad as a botched sporterization).

    • @GunsWithGage
      @GunsWithGage  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Richard I think you are right about this. I actually found that this rifle had a cracked bolt. The 7x57 rifles seem like the way to go

    • @richard1165

      I thought so... I'm getting my c&r relatively soon, and I was attracted by the cheap price of these firearms (unfortunately the days of the $80 mosin are long gone). I'm certainly not afraid of putting some work into these, but issues that you encountered such as a cracked bolt or a deep-pitted barrel are certainly beyond my means of repair other than an overpriced replacement. Thanks for the reply!

      That is not correct, the hype about the 308 concerning this rifle, this rifle is capable of resisting 9000 psi, the 308’s psi is around 5200 great difference. This rumor inconclusive and unsustained. The 7.62 used by this rifle is 7.62 NATO. CETME has a 7.92 Caliber.

    This one was actually a little better than some I've seen. Your work came out very nice 👍. How is the accuracy? I like to find one like this finished condition. I think these make a great handy hunting and range fun rifle. I would ad a aperture sight otherwise keep it factory. These are so great looking to me I don't understand why guys sporterize these. Great job 👍

    7.62x51 runs lower pressure than .308 so be aware, mine was first marked 7 mm Mauser, and the barrel marked .308.

    I bought one of these few months ago and started reading on it. apparently the Spanish used soft Steel in the receiver in bolt. Once they had converted them to 7.62x51mm Cetme, some think it's okay to shoot 308 Winchester through them. This is not advisable as, if memory serves that is essentially a proof load for this receiver and Bolt. Even 7.62x51 NATO may be pushing it since these rifles were originally designed around 7x57mm Mauser pressures. If you hand load some people say to follow 300 Savage data. I hope this helps if you plan to repair and shoot it.

      - TheNuttyGunNut - so in essence you wouldn't advice what I was planning on doing. Re barreling for modern 308 loads?

    • @TheBiggestIron
      @TheBiggestIron 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      sandoval lavodnas not at all, if you're into handloading, light load for this gun. I've heard that barnaul 7.62x51mm / .308 Win may be safe because it's consistently lower pressure than true 7.62x51mm NATO. I wouldn't trust TULA though because they have quality control problems. From what I've seen Barnaul is very consistent good steel cased Russian ammo, if just loaded a little lighter, which is great for this gun. Remember the problem isn't necessarily with the barrel as much as it is the bolt and receiver are made of softer steel. This softer still can give under high pressure, usually stretching the receiver increasing headspace to the point where it's wildly out of spec and suddenly kaboom. Hope this helps you out.

      use 7.62x51 fmj military ammo or reload .308 to 7.62x51 nato specs. the 1916 mauser is made on the 93 mauser action which is called a small ring mauser. instead of the 98 mauser action which is a large ring mauser. the small and large refers to the size of the reciever large is thicker shoots 8mm mauser small ring is for 7mm mauser the 98 large ring mauser cocks on opening the 93 small ring mauser cocks on closing the 98 large ring is the stronger action.

    It seems that your follower was not cut back to allow 308 or NATO rounds to feed better. Are you sure it was chambered for the nato or 308 rounds? Was there a welded feed polar in the chamber for the shorter rounds?

    This is a pre-98 Mauser, probably built on a Mauser 95 style action. 7.62x51 Nato is a very high pressure cartridge. 7mm Mauser should run at lower pressures. Also, the 7mm cartridge is a bit longer, so the Nato round might stick a bit when run through the action - don't know for sure. I have to question the Spanish metalurgy. How good was their steel? How good was their heat treatment? How good is the headspace on the Nato round? You should run a headspace gauge before you shoot that thing. Personally, I would never shoot one. It should be OK in 7mm caliber.

  • @briancummings2782
    @briancummings2782 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I would think the 3040 Craig/30 government which the 7 mm according to history out shot would be about the same ballistics as a 7.62 x 51.

    These old original M-93 (Note the flat bottom bolt face)mausers were originally built in 7x57mm caliber for Spain and several other nations. Thje M-1916 was the year they were adapted,. 7x57mm was a low pressure (40K CUP) and were safe in the earlier Mauser actions (M-91,M-93, M-95) After WWll and Spain joined NATO it was decided to rebarrel them to the Standard NATO round, 7.62x51 or .308 winchester. With the NATO round being a high pressure (60K CUP) caliber many pressure related problems began to appear! At that time Spain decided to Rethink it's earlier decision and began to build the 1948 Spanish Mauser which were of a more modern 98 Mauser design and designed for the higher pressure cartridges. I would hesitate to shoot any of the early mausers in .308 and the 7x57mm only after having them checked for safe headspace by a qualified gunsmith. Most 7x57mm ammo loaded by US Ammo companies is loaded to low pressure and safe to shoot, but European ammo is not. If you reload, l would keep to the lowest loads listed in whichever manual you use! Good shooting!

    This rifles were made for Cavalry and Cavalry men were not very tall. They were selected like that not to put a lot of weight on the horses. These rifles are short to be maneuverable when the troops mount and dismount horses.

    You say this looks good compared to a Mosin. A troll, killed in a plane crash and then cremated looks good compared to a Mosin.
    I have one of the 'bottom of the barrel' 1916 Spanish Mausers from J&G. Mine is in 7x57mm Mauser, which is a fabulous cartridge and within the limits of the 1892 action. They are the first Mauser model released and are a fascinating bit of history, both from the perspective of who did what to who, but also design of the mechanism.

    The chamber gas vent is standard on the M1916. My 7mm "unmarked" has it as well. The unmarked rifles were simply rearsenaled after the Spanish Civil War, at which point they ground the crest off because that government no longer existed.

      Franco’s government was the same after the civil war as before the civil war. He died in 1975.Some of them were built without the crest simply because they weren’t given to the guardia civil who’s rifles had the fasces crest on them, remaining the same for decades.The crest was not ground off, they were assembled from the factory without a crest.

    Great video! I have what I think is an 1893 short rifle. The differences: Leaf rear sight, no thumb cut, no gas hole, 7mm. Otherwise, it is identical. It is so similar to this one I have believed it to be the same for months. I am trying to unsporterize it. The roadblock is the handguard. All the other parts are available. How did you make your new one?

      you can't tell by serial #s on these rifles, usually the year of manufacture was stamped on top of the receiver ring ... there were several hundred thousand made starting in 1893 for multiple nations ... Spanish used them against Teddy Roosevelt at the battle of San Juan hill in the Spanish-American war.

      Mike the Muzzle if it is around .284"+ it is 7x57mm ... if it is around .308" + ... just check to see if the muzzle has been counterbored first, another way is to check it with a 7x57mm case...if the bolt won't close it will be .308 which is a much shorter case...

  • @marckcarbonelloifveteran410
    @marckcarbonelloifveteran410 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Who nominated it a 1916? Because the action is an 1893, all it is a shorter version of the 1893. The importers are the ones that give them those nomenclature to sell them which most of the times they are wrong. Like the famous so called “M-38” there is nothing in the Turkish records that identified those rifles as M-38 only importers bullshit lingo. There was no such thing as an M-38, those rifles were converted to the 8 mm starting in 1938 but they weren’t built in Turkey. There was never any Mauser factory in Turkey. I doubt this Mauser is a 1916., just because the Mauser factory short the barrel in 1916 doesn’t make it a model 1916. All it is a shorter 1893, period!

      Just return it. J&G sales has a 30 inspection period where you can return it. I had the exact same issue with a 7.62x51 model, super deep pitting on the outside of the barrel. They let me return it for a full refund including the cost of shipping. I ordered a 7mm model just recently and apart from the cracked handguard it's in great condition. No rust/pitting, and the actual stock was in great condition. They are definitely a gamble.
