    I've never read a book so fast! th-cam.com/users/postUgkx1_veP7CApJK_GWy_TczaMciuG64PqJeU Learning about his dogs and experiences was just the icing on the cake - bed this book through and through. We're working with our new pup and Brandon's advise was just what I needed. Wish he'd just come and train for me haha but it's good for us and happy to have this new set of tools to use on our pup.

    I have been raising my puppy in a major US city, and I train puppies around my city for work. Teaching a dog to live in an urban environment is such a process, and I love seeing how much grace you offer to Veronica. My own dog had significant fear responses to things like construction and buses. With positive reinforcement training (and actually a couple of sessions with a behaviorist) he is such a confident city pup now. It brings me a lot of joy to see dogs thriving in big cities. Dogs have an ability to adapt to novelty that constantly impresses me.
    And I just have to add how harsh corrections, prong/choke collars, and shock collars will only reduce a dog's ability to cope with a big city environment. This kind of training is about building them up, not tearing them down. Of course, you know that. If I had hired a trainer who slapped a shock collar on my dog and "corrected" his reactive behavior, he would be a completely different dog and not in a good way.
    Keep up the good work and keep posting videos of Inertia and Veronica learning and growing :)

    Loooooved this video! Makes me think of when I'll re-introduce my dog to the city. He was used to it in England, but we've moved to Canada and he hasn't been in downtown or any city centre, here in Winnipeg. The fact that you show when Veronica is not perfect gives so much authenticity and hope to people like me, who are't dog trainers, but really want to educate my pup best I can, so he's happy and safe. Thank you both, you're amazing!

    I love your training videos but especially love seeing the compassion for dogs and the patience. It's really inspiring and has helped me become super patient with my own dog who is currently almost 50 lbs of adolescent energy, with a breed mix of 5 high energy high prey drive dogs (told lab mix by the shelter, embark dna test showed 0% lab lol). Training her has become my hobby and we have a lot of fun going on adventures. I'm fortunate to live in a rural area surrounded by parks with beautiful hiking trails. I am so glad I came upon your videos and I adore the bond you have with Inertia. I hope me and my dog can get to that point too! She's been with me for 2 months so far and while she still has a long way to go since she clearly wasn't socialized at all as a puppy and spent most of her life in a shelter, she has already made a ton of progress!
    Thanks again for dedicating your time to dog training. Don't lose heart in the face of all the aversive tool addicts and naysayers. Without people like you, people like me would be impatiently using shock collars and ruining the bonds with our dogs trying to get instant results.

    I love videos like these!! it makes me feel like I'm on the right track and a reminder that it's always a process! My dog is 2+ and still reactive to anything on wheels due a really traumatic experience we had. I have been working with him (it's been soooo hard!) but he's come a long way! I'm still learning to be more attuned to him and I have learnt how sensitive he actually is 😊.
    Recently, he is able to move aside to process what is going on before continuing his walk without being overly scared more consistently and it makes me so proud of him; and he is able to ignore some loud sounds that he used to run from!
    He would have turned out differently if we had chosen aversive methods.
    Thank you so much for your sharing, work and advocacy for positive reinforcement! ☺️

    When I first got into dog training, I found your channel, and so thought dog training was weird. But then I found the real trainers, such as Ellis, Balabanov, Bellon, and Krueger. Trainers who build behaviors and are masters of Positive Reinforcement. Compared to them, you are very very amateur. Your timing is all off; your markers are inconsistent. No wonder it takes you months and months to make an inch of headway.
    But importantly, these real trainers, they don't just pound on dogs! Are you kidding me?!? They know how to be more INTERESTING to the dog than the distractions, because of the relationship they have built. They understand the motivations of dogs because they fully and intimately understand all 4 quadrants of dog training. They advise people to build their dogs and manage their environments; to build a relationship and learn how to become interesting to the dog. To NOT jump to corrections. They help people understand a dog for real.
    But I see you, parroting your junk science, throwing rocks in your glass house...and I realize this is not even you, is it? You probably do want to go talk to Robert or Ivan. It must be humiliating to display such cowardice after you started this. But you can't go talk to them, because you are a puppet to whatever corporate agenda that has enslaved you.
    Well, I wish you well. And I hope you enjoy the bark box sales. #sellout

      Lol. This is awesome. I feel the same way. I was ff until it didn’t work with my dogs for addressing major issues like reactivity. Ellis and Krueger are idols. They just know dogs. And no, they don’t just slam them with an e collar or a prong. They actually teach the dog and then they use corrections when pos reinforcement isn’t working in that environment because it isn’t high enough value for the dog. Also Nate Schoemer is awesome. And yes, my dogs are e collar and prong trained because it helps us better manage situations for them. But I would like to mention my dogs will get kibble in training, or the other day I used a pancake to help my dog learn something. We aren’t cruel because we are not limited trainers.

    7:10 "Sounds like that do not go unnoticed by a dog" ... Funny story, the other day I was out hiking in a forest here in the UK, when all of a sudden, two military Typhoon jets came roaring overhead engaged in a flight training exercise. Now this sound was unlike anything I've EVER heard, it was truly deafening, it shook through my bones. The sound was thunder times 1000. But my dog didn't even look up from the ground he was sniffing, he was locked in and not paying any attention at all!

    feel like there's a missed opportunity at 5:55 when V stopped taking treats. We've all been there, even to the point where the trainer comes over and saves the day. The teaching opportunity was "...and here's exactly what Zak did to recover V's engagement." I imagine you had to change camerapersons at that point so the actual point of transition was not filmed, but capturing those moments are pure gold for us mere mortals.

    I NEED YOUR HELP! Or rather, a dog I have fallen in love with does.
    I love your videos and have used many of your techniques with my rescue mixed breed since that didn't know how to dog. Your videos have helped us hugely! I especially love your series where you foster a rescue and train them until you can find a good home for them. At my local shelter, there is a Pittie/Pyrenees/Aussie mix I have absolutely fallen in love with, but we already have 2 dogs in my house and my mom does not want any more. This rescue I've fallen in love with has been adopted and brought back somewhere around the area of 5 times! It really breaks heart because he's really sweet! The reason he's been brought back so many times is that he gets overprotective of his family at some point each time he's adopted. I know this is a really long comment and you might not read it, but if you do see it, PLEASE let me know how I can contact you! Bear needs help and this is the best way I know how to help him! Thanks so much!

    • @janhankins911
      @janhankins911 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Not sure Zak would do that?? You probably don't want to take a reactive dog into this type of environment until you've got some pretty good foundation training under your belt. Taking a reactive dog into this environment may put the dog over threshold and that's not good for a couple of reasons. First, the dog doesn't learn well when he's over threshold. Second, the dog is " practicing" the behavior you don't want (the more the dog does the behavior, the harder it is to change it). I'm certainly not a professional trainer, but I've trained a great many rescue dogs and I'd never take a reactive dog into a bustling city for a beginning training session. That would be near the end of training (not the beginning). Maybe a professional trainer would do well in a situation like that, but I (as a non-professional) wouldn't attempt it.

    • @sebg2086
      @sebg2086 ปีที่แล้ว

      he cant

    • @janhankins911
      @janhankins911 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sebg2086 No one should. It's not a good way to deal with a reactive dog. Putting the dog over threshold and then expecting the dog to learn demonstrates a total lack of knowledge about learning. So it isn't that Zak "can't", it's that Zak has the knowledge to choose the correct way to deal with a reactive dog. If you balanced trainers were doctors, you'd still be trepanning. If you don't know what that is, look it up. That's about where you stand in your knowledge of the science guiding training of animals. If you want to stay in a profession and be "professional", you should have the ethics to stay up to date with the latest knowledge and studies in your profession. If you love dogs like you claim, then I don't understand why you seem to be so eager to inflict pain and suffering on those dogs, to gleefully make them anxious. I saw the most horrible display. I watched some "balanced" trainers turn a happy, bouncy, confident puppy who had never been trained and who was exuberant in greeting (jumping up), who wanted to go sniff everything (pulling on the lead), who wanted to go visit all the people and dogs he met (pulling on the lead, barking), who begged and stole items off the kitchen counter, chewed shoes, etc. That dog came in with tail wagging, head held high, tongue lolling, with a bouncy gait. He left with his tail tucked, his head low, his mouth tightly closed, and almost afraid to move. They broke his happy spirit and I almost screamed in their face at what they had done to this poor dog. This same "trainers" looked at a year old Great Dane puppy (if you've ever been around giant breed dogs, a year old is still a PUPPY), and told the owners she was a "ticking time bomb" and she should be put down. I left with the owners and begged them to let me have the dog. This dog was no "ticking time bomb". She was a BIG PUPPY WHO HAD NO MANNERS. She went into rescue and was placed in a wonderful home where she learned some manners and she hasn't "exploded" yet. You balanced people need to learn about your own profession.

    You shouldn’t have to tire out your dog to get them to be obedient or perform. There’s actually reputable research on this specifically in terms of dogs. Dogs (and humans) do best training in the level of “arousal” that they will be doing it after it’s been trained. That’s the short of it, though not the best worded as it’s a lot more complex than that… I need to ask my agility instructor on the resource on it again as she went to a seminar that talked about this at length. It’s pretty fascinating and this is something that began being researched in human athletes.
    So I suppose you CAN tire them out beforehand, but they may not be at their best with what you are wanting unless you want to have to keep tiring them out beforehand for what you want out of them..

    • @zakgeorge
      @zakgeorge  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s more than tiring them out. It’s giving them a healthy outlet to run chase and bite something. Super natural behaviors. We teach them to do it in a way that is acceptable. Naturally, all dogs are different. It’s important to let dogs opt out and take breaks as well.

    Hi Zak - I have been diagnosed with Complex PTSD and the last three months have been bad. Our beloved Candy passed away 18 months ago and it broke our hearts which I took very badly as that was the time I was first diagnosed with PTSD. I said I will not have another dog as I just cannot stand the heartbreak until now. My niece has asked us to foster here 3 month old puppy called Basil. He is a cross German Shepherd/Labrador/either Staffy or pit ball and he is just gorgeous. We have had him for a week now and prior to getting him I went online to see if there was anything good in dog training. Your TH-cam channel just blew me away, I love your views on dog training and you and Brie are just wonderful to watch. I have taken on board your training methods and the results so far are truly amazing. I call my Basil my therapy dog and the wife says she has seen a huge improvement in my way I look at life now, I am just so happy and he gives me a routine which i had totally lost. I am truly hoping that my niece does not want him back and will try anything to keep him, so fingers crossed for me.

Then I trained my dog properly on a prong and e collar. I take her anywhere now. Actually I take all 3 of my dogs everywhere now. I watch PP/FF training fail and struggle everyday on my walks. There is so much more to this than you appear to realize unfortunately. Dog training isn’t just about getting a dog to do XY or Z. It is about raising a well-adjusted dog and considering their welfare and mental state at all times when we teach them. Given that the tools you mentioned are literally advised against by every relevant academic body on the planet, I am unwilling to consider them. Shocking dogs Has no place in dog training.

    One thing about picking up dogs: I was under the impression of not picking up the dog when it misbehaves or is clingy because it encourages that behavior. You picking up Veronica in the city wouldn't fall under that category. (2:15).

Keep in mind -- this would be something for everyday people, not dog trainers who know what to do in these situations. I don't know if there is a study specific to what I described. I have three really small dogs (our biggest weighs a whopping 10 pounds) and our sessions have to be quite short. Those little tummies get full so quickly. So when they stop taking treats, that's my cue that either (a) they are nervous/anxious about something (in which case they are giving me other body language cues that they're anxious), or (b) they're full right now. If they're anxious, we leave the situation. If they're full, I either need to switch reinforcers (to, say, a toy or acting totally silly) or stop the session and come back later for another short session. That can be a little frustrating when you make a special trip for training, but that's a fact of living with the small ones.

Suddenly the man threw sand at the mastiff's face which made him attack the man. My dad ran to prevent the dog from hurting the man and tried to restrain the dog but the dog turned around and bit my dad. We yelled at him to stop but he held on to my dad untill I stepped in and held his head still. It took me, my dad, my neighbour and my sister to hold him down and he was still struggling. My dad wanted to strangle him but I refused to release his head, then my neighbour hit the dog on it's head, that's when the dog calmed down and ran inside. The bite was deep so we had to take my dad to the hospital. Now my dad wants to give the dog to someone else because he's afraid he'll attack again. I understand his fear but I think he just needs training. The dog turned 1 today and this is the first time he's ever attacked anyone. I don't think he meant to harm my dad, he just wanted to protect him but it ended badly. I just want to know if it's advisable to keep the dog considering I have a sister who's 12.
    We also don't have any dog trainers in my city.

    Hi Zak, do you have any videos about your opinion on anxiety medication for dogs? I recently got a trainer for my dog and based on his history (he is a rescue who was rehomed multiple times) and his reactive behavior towards dogs, she suggested a daily anxiety med. I talked to the vet and she agreed it would be a good idea. I’m nervous that this will change the personality of my dog and/or trigger unwanted side effects/health issues in the future. I’d love to hear your thoughts!

    Hey, Zak. How do you prevent your dog from getting tangled in the long line?
