Hey Roger I’m the guy in the Dallas area that got my RMP to start my business a couple weeks before lockdown Have gone from nothing to 3 property management companies, making a website that’s actually getting jobs and enough work to keep myself and two others working daily and scheduled over a week out Things are definitely looking up
In Alabama you only have to have 2 years as an apprentice to take the journeyman test. I waited 4 years to take (and pass) mine. Only because I was in college, but I worked every day as an apprentice. Also, I'm a third generation plumber in our family business. Very proud of that.
Arizona plumber here. 5th year apprentice in the union. The state requires 4 years of experience (2 years maximum of accredited school counts towards the 4 years required) When I hit the 4 year mark, initiation date on my book, I went to take the city exam. I passed and now a city licensed plumber, but still an apprentice in the eyes of the union. I’m working on my state license now to become a contractor. My test is next week.
I’m a journeyman plumber here in Texas. Hoping to have my masters by August. I didn’t feel the test was too hard but I had worked in the trade for nearly 20 years prior to going for my journeyman’s. (Not a native Texan)
Walter everson hey thank you for that. I went for the test last week and went with Johnny for the prep course in June. Recorded the whole course so I could listen to it closer to the time I took the test. Had some issues with the math but still passed the test.
Hello, i just graduated ftom penn foster plumbing school online here in texas. I am a little confuses. Do i have to alreasy have a plumbing job in order to get my apprentice card? Thank you
Hi sir actually I have water suply network in my country I have worked here but I dont have a cirtificate or how can I take cirtificate ? Please give me smoe information
In Florida plumbing 10 yrs for licensed plumbers. 23 companies along way. Average income Per year $100k.... Some companies use aggressive approach provide option like gold platinum pkg or lowest bronze/ bandaid repair. Longer warranties and yearly contracts and some force you to push enzymes and products. When I was at Sam Jolley’s plumbing last year my weekly checks were 2,400-$3200 = my checks reflected: Hourly wage $45 Overtime wage= time + 1/2 Double time Emergency fee $150 x each after hours call I took % of sales also . My stubs had more listings than I ever knew was possible on a pay stub. I dont want to be rich. This life in Florida as plumber doing service you get tips and side jobs
In Sydney Australia, you need to do 3 years being an Apprentice that means 1 day a week at technical college and 5 days working a week. After that you need to do an additional year working with a licensed plumber. Then you go back to technical college 2 nights a week for 2 years still while working for a registered plumber. After all that you can APPLY for a licence.
Plumbing contractor aka master plumber (indiana) and it was pretty easy. 4 years if school and 8000 hours OJT. Exams were open book. Btw..on wifes account
Hey Roger. I appreciate the video about how things go in Texas. On one of your live Monday streams I commented about how I live in Indiana and work for roto-rooter in Chicago as a drain and sewer tech to get my foot in the door. Because at the Local 210 in northwest Indiana they ONLY accept apprentice apps for 10 days each January. So of course that's 6 months away but just hope the year experience i have will help bump up my value over nothing at all. Also Union plumbers in Indiana as an apprentice your required to attend school for 5 years instead of 4 like many other trades. And have to have over 8500 on the job hours along with classes once a week for 1st year apps and twice a week for 2-5 year apps. To answer your question about how it is in other states. Curious to see how similar that is for Texas. Thanks again Roger take care.
Thanks for always dropping some wisdom for us new guys Roger!! I've only been in the trade for a year with an open shop, but videos like this definitely can help open doors for people like me who love this trade💯 you're the man! Keep up the awesome content 👏
In New York we have to pass 7 years of on the book's plumbing to show for the plumbing exam where we pay 300 something dollars and have to take a bossy's class before the exam to train for it. Or are journeymen plumber license or AKA hour registered plumbing license we don't have certificates that we can get for specific job duties but it includes all faces plumbing just like a master plumber's license except there are certain systems we cannot touch without the master plumbing license
Wow... I can’t believe how easy it is to become licensed in some of these states. I live in Montana. Montana requires a five year apprenticeship to take the state journeyman’s test. We also have a med gas endorsement. You have to work another four years as a licensed journeyman to be able to take the masters test. We do not have any residential licensing. It’s all or nothing. Montana also requires four hours continuing education every year. Montana is also one of the toughest states to become licensed as a plumber. We only reciprocate with North Dakota, Washington State and Oregon I believe. If you want to work in Montana and you’ve been plumbing for decades in another state one still needs to sit the journeyman’s exam. The city I live in requires everyone take a fuel gas test as well. In contrast... Wyoming... No plumbing licensed required whatsoever. (It used to be that way. I am assuming it still is). I served a union apprenticeship. I went to school on Saturday all day for five years. Non union apprentices are required to complete 12-15 different course books during their five year training period. This is all administered by the State of Montana.
Im really thinking about it. I feel like it was meant to be and I keep thinking where can I fit in to society and make my contribution back to the world and it makes more since that I should start an apprenticeship in residential plumbling to start out cause in the past 4 to 5 years have some on the experience in manuel labor as a helper assisting the plumber and I did a few plumbing jobs around the house. Im starting to think maybe its meant to be and Im confident I can learn it the last job I did was help a plumber from a licensed company install a water heater at my home I was the customer and he appreciated my help its enlightening to me cause I thought I dont know what I can be good at and have a career doing it. The plumber said thank you for the help and everytime I have spoken to a plumber they were suggesting I look for at a company. I think its the greatest opportunity for me and I like helping people and being in need and being considered valuable asset. I want someone to give me that chance. Lately I have been unemployed and I have been trying to bring one of my family members some help they a tree job that was incomplete and my neighbors had a tree and landscaping company and they were offering me an opportunity to work for them as long as I got them that account and I came real close to closing the deal and I really wanted the job. My uncle killed the tree job I had offered him for a reasonable price and that effected my chances of getting employment with that company if it wasnt for my family shitting on me I would not have wasted the time and energy trying to help them. Anyway the reason why I telling you that story is cause I feel like I have no hope my life has been full of nothing but disappointment and I all try to do is help and I get mistreated pushed away all thanks to my uncle. Which help me realize I should find opportunities for myself where there is a high demand for my effort and even though alot of people look down on plumbing it is an important need to fill in the job market this world needs plumbers you did help me see the big picture and to be honest why should I care about what other people think of me and what I want to do all it has done for me is hinder me and hurt me from succeeding in life. I didnt want to leave to long of a turd of a comment but im not gonna let life kick me down and keep me down Im GONNA PURSUE A CAREER in plumbing before its too late. P.S. I want to thank you for all your helpful advice you helped me decide where I should pursue a career in plumbing cause it offers alot of unique opportunities to grow as a person. I saw alot of your videos about if you were to choose between an electrician and a HVAC tech I highly believe without a doubt that plumbing is more rewarding than most trades. I hope u have a blessed day. Thank you for all your help your changing people lives by giving them good advice please keep the videos coming. Have a nice morning or day or night whenever you decide to read my comment. Have a nice day. Thank you. Thank you. I have to take a poop now I hope I dont clogg the toilet again.
No, that’s not correct, There is no plumbing trade school in the entire country in any state, that would allow you test for a license immediately after completing the course. No matter the state you are in, You would have to have had some type of apprenticeship with on the job training hour requirements already done.
Thank you for your videos. I started in plumbing in 1981 in San Diego @ a union shop. Affirmative Action prevented me from getting into the apprenticeship program. I moved back to Texas in 2014 and passed my Journeyman Plumber in 2015. I like the Washington test better, as you have to be proficient in sizing and the code. I am currently trying to figure out if there is a way to fast track a Master license. Any suggestions?
3rd year union apprentice and gas tech here. I know many apprentices who do side work solo, obviously at their own peril, especially since they surely haven't undertaken extra insurance should things go afoul on a job. Great that in TX apprentices can have endorsements, no such thing exists in Ontario, Canada based on my initial research. Getting an entry-level G3 ("supervised") gas license needs no apprenticeship and takes 3 months of evening classes, Monday to Wednesday, and a G2 (solo) gas license needs no takes 6 months of evening classes, Monday to Thursday, At least it's something, and plumbing piping skills lend themselves to that trade very well. All employers like when apprentices has those gas certificates too.
Hi sir , i applied the last week with local 68 Houston , i went to the test but i didn't do good , i only got 40 % , i don't know if i still have a chance ! , i really want to join the union .

Hey Roger great video, I’ve been working for a city in the DFW area for 6 years now as a maintenance tech . I do a lot of the plumbing on our buildings, we do have a master plumber in our dept. I’m wanting to get my apprentice for plumbing, do those years count as training experience?
would you say that you have to be the right kind of person to become a plumber, i havnt been good at hands on stuff like stripped screws and stuff, but i understand plumbing and electrical diagrams like there easy, and i am good with tools in general, just not an advanced guy but if shown i definitely can learn.
I’m looking to get into this trade, are apprenticeships hard to get or usually open? i know you say there’s a lot of supply and demand but are there any requirements other than drivers license?
I started my apprenticeship 3 months ago graduated high school early. I live an hour or two north of dallas tx and applied to every plumbing company in my area luckily I got an interview to one 3 min from my moms house. Just like any other job go in for your interview and wether or not you have the experience if its open shop you need to talk to the owner. I hadn't picked up a tool in my life and they started me in the warehouse learning parts but I was still getting hours for my tradesman. You need to pull off a strong interview if you get one, make them KNOW that you are there to start a career in the trade and you want to be an asset to the company and they'll hire you then and there.
Most likely have to start over as an apprentice . If the Texas state plumbing board does recognize your training and certifications, you’ll still have to take the exams to become Texas certified. Hey roger I am 17 and am wanting to become a plumber is it possible for me to get an internship at a plumbing business? Or do I have to just wait till I’m 18 and go to trade school
Hey Mathew I’m 20 years old and I have my journeyman’s license already and I started my apprenticeship when I was 16 but I was homeschool and my dad owned his own plumbing company but anyways my advice to you is either go to a school for plumbing it will give you a head start to get your journeyman’s license or you can work for a plumbing shop delivering parts or just a labor and promise them you will be at work everyday and show that you are committed to being a plumber. A lot of plumbers don’t like to waste there time training new guys in but if you show that you are willing to work hard and learn everything they each you then you will have it made and continue to learn the trade then before you know it you will be a licensed plumber and depending where you live you can make over 100k good luck to you
@@noahneis1558 paper plumber that had your dad lie about your hours hahaha. Well, let’s hope you actually learned the trade by the time you get your masters.
8 years trade experience, (unless you get lucky and get into union apprenticeship then 5 years) Class courses, test for journeyman after 4 years then test for master plumber after holding journeyman license for 4 years, plus insurance. Its not easy and take lots of time.
There's so much to learn. 6 years from green helper to running a business is pushing it. Been plumbing for over 20 years in Texas (Master RMP) and Im still learning.
@@jtplumbing6592 have you been to the clases? Good news for 2023 legislation Russell and other are fighting back to bring it to 1 year how it use to be back then, for the looks of it how it sounds we on the good side of passing it on 2023 man I can't wait!!!!!!!!
OK, since I just moved here from PA, I want to start out the process for getting licensed, and I was told by the state of Texas that I would have to work for someone else for 2 years. I have always worked for myself, doing trim carpentry and such, and I couldn't afford to work hourly for someone else for 2 years. I hope Texas changes that requirement.
Political, yes, of course they are. Impossible to get in without an ‘in’, no. I got in at 18 without a single family member or friend in the trade, was on my first job within a few months. I’ve heard some locals are much harder to get into, just depends on the work in the area, I’d guess
Texas has an excellent Journeyman and Master exam. I do find it a bit odd that a Backflow Prevention device tester is licensed by TCEQ and not TSBPE. Also interesting that a journeyman or higher can install and repair a backflow preventer but cannot test it without a TCEQ license , and a licensed tester cannot install or repair with out a journeyman or higher license. ( I hold a master and 4 TCEQ licenses including backflow tester)
Licensed journeyman in Nebraska. Had to work 3 years to get my time then took my test. Needed 75% to pass & I got 89%. Pretty proud of that.

I passed journeymens about 20 years ago. I was tough. Took me two attempts. I regret not getting my master's. Texas.
Just started at gulf states plumbing and mechanical as at the provision level.
Hi sir ,
i applied the last week with local 68 Houston , i went to the test but i didn't do good , i only got 40 % ,
i don't know if i still have a chance ! , i really want to join the union .
I'm licensed in California c36 and master in texas. It was easier to get my license in California than getting my masters in texas.
Ten year Licensed journeyman in Chicago. It took 5 years for the apprenticeship. Now Texas is looking really good. What's the deal to transfer in?
Doesn't going to technical school get you to Journeyman faster?
I'm a journeyman electrician. Idk about plumbing but in NYC if you have a degree it is equal to some years working experience. Last I checked.. to take an electrician's master license you need 10 years of work experience or an electrical degree and 6 years of work experience or a valid apprentice program recognized by the state which has school and work at the same time. The apprenticeship is the fastest way for us. I can't imagine plumbing would be too different. Just make sure the technical school is recognized because there are alot of phony schools out there.
Possibly, but a structured apprenticeship is always the best approach.
In Minnesota tech/trade school is 2 years for only 1 year of experience towards your journeyman's license. So going open shop or union would be the fastest route in Minnesota. From all the information I've gathered tech/trade school is a waste of time and money. My local tech school recruiter verified this. Every state is different though
No
Please how do I aquire a license in mechanical plumbing ?
What if have a apprenticeship card expires for year? Do you get counted for those hours?
Hey mr Roger ., thanks. For the info ., I just moved from Los Ángeles to Dallas ., and it’s more complicated to get a license here than in California ., Thanks for the video
What's that little screen behind you showing time, date, whether, etc.?
Do states have reciprocity on master plumber licenses? If you get it in NY can you relocate to Texas and just get new card from Texas?
Don’t think so
If you already have a license in a state approved by Texas you can submit it and then test for the Texas license, but I don’t think they will give you a Texas license just because you have one elsewhere
In Texas if you have a license somewhere else all you have to do is take the test and you are Texas certified. It doesn't just transfer over, but that's because every state has slightly different rules.
No short cuts, if the state board recognizes or not, you’ll have to take the exams.

Do i need to have a ged or high school diploma?
I am interested in getting this license my husband works in installing sprinklers

No you gotta work for a plumbing company.
Thank for information

Like you said Karl, if you are taught you can learn. That's what it's all about!!!
I’m looking to get into this trade, are apprenticeships hard to get or usually open? i know you say there’s a lot of supply and demand but are there any requirements other than drivers license?

@@noahneis1558 paper plumber that had your dad lie about your hours hahaha. Well, let’s hope you actually learned the trade by the time you get your masters.
Do you have to renew your Masters license yearly ?
Yes.
Is there a way to learn the trade while your still in high school
certain vocational schools
What does it take to get your RMP license in Texas?
Texas Master License and RMP course plus insurance. It's all listed on the state website TSBOPE
8 years trade experience, (unless you get lucky and get into union apprenticeship then 5 years) Class courses, test for journeyman after 4 years then test for master plumber after holding journeyman license for 4 years, plus insurance. Its not easy and take lots of time.
Takes 8-10 years. No short cuts. Good luck.
Hai sir
We have plumbing certificate
Now I know why they want to stream line holy cow
That's licenced plumber to you Mario!
I think the masters license should be lower to 2 years and not 4 thats just to freaken long im getting older by the year what the heck
Some people need more time to figure it all out. Some don't though...
There's so much to learn. 6 years from green helper to running a business is pushing it. Been plumbing for over 20 years in Texas (Master RMP) and Im still learning.
You are allowed to think any dumb ideas you want, that is your right as an American. But it won’t change, we don’t believe in short cuts…
@@jtplumbing6592 have you been to the clases? Good news for 2023 legislation Russell and other are fighting back to bring it to 1 year how it use to be back then, for the looks of it how it sounds we on the good side of passing it on 2023 man I can't wait!!!!!!!!
@@angell3578 I honestly hope not. I know them and they have good hearts. But licensing needs to become more difficult, not easier.
New York is a tuff state to get your license
That’s not what my buddies that own plumbing companies in New York tell me. Where are you getting this information?
OK, since I just moved here from PA, I want to start out the process for getting licensed, and I was told by the state of Texas that I would have to work for someone else for 2 years. I have always worked for myself, doing trim carpentry and such, and I couldn't afford to work hourly for someone else for 2 years. I hope Texas changes that requirement.
You have to be trained by a licensed plumber to be a plumber. You want to become a Jedi, you train with a Jedi master.
It takes 8-10 years to get a master licenses and become a plumbing contractor, no short cuts, I hope that never changes.
Aren't they trying to ambolish the plumbing licensing in texas
No, that mess is over and done with. Where good. License isn’t going anywhere
im starting to think that the unions are political. impossible to get in if you dont know anyone
Political, yes, of course they are. Impossible to get in without an ‘in’, no. I got in at 18 without a single family member or friend in the trade, was on my first job within a few months. I’ve heard some locals are much harder to get into, just depends on the work in the area, I’d guess
@@brevinainslie6357 did you have to do an aptitude test? if yes then what did it consist of?
You’re just now starting to think that 🤣🤣🤣🤙they always have been
Can you be an apprentice plumber forever until you change your career?
doesn’t make sense. you will make SHITTY money
@@deesh7438 can we meet up? I wanna fight
Stupid
Texas has an excellent Journeyman and Master exam. I do find it a bit odd that a Backflow Prevention device tester is licensed by TCEQ and not TSBPE. Also interesting that a journeyman or higher can install and repair a backflow preventer but cannot test it without a TCEQ license , and a licensed tester cannot install or repair with out a journeyman or higher license. ( I hold a master and 4 TCEQ licenses including backflow tester)
A plumber CANNOT repair a backflow preventer without the TCEQ bpat license. A plumber can Install backflow preventers and that's it
