You can't do that on 500 loose patches of grass placed 4 days before the game. BTW, Canada also missed a couple of chances due to that factor. The difference is that Argentina created 4 times as many chances.

Before rushing to blame MLS for Messi's poor finishing in this game, remember that the goalkeeper who stopped him cold on those breakaways is an MLS keeper and the defender who blocked his attempts to make runs into the box on several occasions is an MLS defender.

Those chances were just 2 moments. Yes, big moments, but just 2 amongst many moments he created.

Played Di Maria through but he couldn't control the ball
Played Acuna behind the defense line, with a ball that lured the keeper off his line, but no-one was there to tap in Acuna's square ball.
Played Alvarez through, but he was forced wide after rounding the keeper before mis-hitting his shot.
Dissected the Canada low block leading to the first goal.
Played Otamendi through on goal with freekick 1
Intercepts a ball that leads to Lautaro being through on goal
Played Otamendi through on goal again with freekick 2
Played Lautaro through on goal with a slide rule pass for the second goal
It was a chance creation clinic from Messi. Would have been a solid 10 if he had scored at least one of the goals. So the 2 misses plus the fact that they still won and he was influential in it makes this a very solid 8/10 performance

I thought by now based on how they start the World Cup that everybody knows thats simply how Messi Argentina plays their game. They always start slow & lacklustre which makes them seem unpredictable, I assume they are saving their energy for later games to play the bigger better teams then by semi finals they start stepping up their game & u eventually see how unstoppable the team is.

Unfortunately, I don't think playing in MLS is helping with his form (as in he's playing against a lot worse competition than he would be otherwise). He'll probably be up to speed by next match.
The first thing you people need to be talking about is the horrific condition of the pitch. You can't remove a synthetic field and replace it with natural grass 4 days before the inaugural game of such an important tournament. Whoever made that decision needs to be fired on the spot and never again be allowed to make decisions of that nature. You simply cannot play a decent game of football on 500 loose patches of grass. Argentina was forced to change its entire game plan due to that factor, and that also had a significant bearing on the poor finishing. Not only that, playing on such an unstable ground is dangerous, as proven by the foul on Messi that almost put him out of the game and could have easily caused a more serious injury. Americans need to stop thinking that they need to reinvent the wheel in everything they do, and especially thinking that they can do it better. Football is over 100 years old. What they need to do is take the humble seat and learn how thing are done elsewhere in the world. And for God's sake, ditch those embarrassing synthetic grass pitches. That's not how you play football.

The field was in a very bad shape. Very difficult for both teams to control the ball wile running. But it really affect more to Argentina counterattacks.

The other factor besides his age is when you play in a weaker league, you aren’t as sharp. I wish more people knew this. I played club football in Sydney my whole life and when I moved to Melbourne they only had a lower semi professional team near me which allowed me in because they had extensive injuries in their squad. They dropped me to the reserves then the under 20s after a few weeks but allowed me to stay training with the reserves. I had to be on at all times. I eventually broke into the reserves and became a starter. Always play at a level that challenges you if you see potential in your ability to improve
Argentina is a slow starting team. They build as they go through the tournament. I expect their games vs Chile and Peru to be much more dominant.

I think the field had a lot to do with why their finishing was all over the place. Its not real grass like in Europe. Its turf with grass on top. The shot doesn’t come off the same. And Canada as well had the same issue. So its possible that the way each team played is not reflective of what they are capable of.
It wasn't as problematic as stated by the crew here. Messi's finishing in this game wasn't on-point. So it could've easily been a lot more. Argentina saw that they could play with the ball in the back field a lot more without stresses of other teams. So yeah, they were playing over-confident at times, but not to a point where Canada "caused problems" for them. I will say that Canada's keeper had a stellar game.

One thing I will say is that there is an ignorance that we are seeing from Americans and Canadians regarding refs. Like that ref was historically very anti-Argentina during copa America. But to non-south Americans they don’t know that and make outlandish statements bc they don’t understand the physicality of South American football. Concacaf are GUESTS to this tournament which is why i don’t understand why they are hosts??? Like copa America never had a prayer or religious statement said at the first game….
