Some people claim this album is not black metal just because it doesn't sound like shit, is played by actual musicians and does not portrayed ridiculous anrichristian poses and nazi speech. As a matter of fact the best black metal bands have been those that not attache to an exclusive esqueme and are capable to unleash the creative power over average ones.
That's exactly what Black Metal is not. Black Metal isn't style of music in the same sense as oompah for example. What makes music Black Metal is ideology not "tempo, picking technique and harmonic structure". How many Black Metal bands have you actually even heard to claim something that ridicilous? Two? But obviously someone sporting a photoshopped corpsepaint would never be able to comprehend that.
Music categories are based on musical style, not on lyrical content, and certainly not on fashion styles. Having said that, the term black metal was coined by Venom, who, by today's standards, weren't actually black metal, but closer to thrash metal. The black metal genre as we know it today, didn't really get established as a recognizable style until the second wave of Scandinavian black metal bands came out. Of course, today black metal is probably the most diversified of all metal subgenres, with the possible exception of prog metal, but at its core still lies the raw, tremelo-picked riff of the early Scandinavian masters. To say black metal is based on a feeling rather than the riffs, is an emotional argument, not a rational one. You might as well throw out all genres and say Metallica and Morbid Angel are basically the same kind of thing cuz they're both rock. All genres of (rock) music come with their own specific fashion trends, but none was ever defined by them - neither in a linguistical, nor in a musical theory sense. Musical genres exist for the sake of communication, they are linguistic constructs based on musical parameters. As such, they need clearly defined borders. To leave this open to personal interpretation and whim defeats the very purpose. If someone hears early Darkthrone and wants you to recommend more like that, Root isn't going to be first on the list, is it? Besides, why does it matter if Root isn't black metal? Are you so hung up on a genre tag that you can't accept anything you like falling outside of it? A rose by any other name...
