Thank you, Oto. (And many thanks to your anonymous donors). This series makes for nice quick overviews of / intros to the brands. I much appreciate your time and effort here.
I’ve used Grumbacher Academy watercolors in the past and really enjoyed them. They’re vibrant, easy to wet, and stay bright when dry. If their student grade is that good, I would imagine Grumbacher Finest would be very good. Thanks for the review.
What a wonderful and generous gift! TI agree with you, the mixes are awesome. The coral as well as the Ultramarin-Turquoise mix are simply gorgeous. But I'm really impressed by this deeo colour of the cobalt turquoise. So far every one I tried were much lighter. This could be a colour to make a comparison on. :)
There is a difference between Cobalt Turquoise and Cobalt Turquoise Light/Cobalt Teal. Winsor & Newton, Qor and Daniel Smith (and probably other artist brands by different names) both have a darker Cobalt Turquoise PB36 vs the CTL/CTB which is usually PG50 or PB28. But you can rarely go wrong with any of the Cobalts, which tend to be similar quality across artist watercolor lines.
Very interesting to see the quality of these paints. Grumbaucher was the first tube paint brand I had, their student grade... and it literally made me hate watercolour for a good while D: They were simply awful. Good to know it was just the student grade that was particularly terrible. It was super heavy on filler.
FYI, The Grumbacher watercolors are the same as Blick artists' watercolor paints, although I don't think there's much of a price difference between the two brands.
I've heard good things about Grumbacher artists and student range. I think I found 1 website that sells them here ages ago, the student line is impossible to get unless you pay double for it.
I heard good things about the artist grade, but my experience with the student grade was horrible throughout that line. To be fair, that was close to 20 years ago, but it was enough to keep me away. It might be worth a second look at the artist grade. Good luck!
I actually had a terrible experience with these paints. They are very pigmented, yes. But the color doesn’t travel at all. The paint’s texture is gummy; it is incredibly hard to do a gradated wash wet-on-wet as the brush completely moves the paint first applied, as if it were jelly, and it’s almost impossible to not leave streak marks, despite working on 100% cotton paper. They work ok for very diluted washes, but it’s not easy to work in mass tone.
I think the grumbacher student grade is a decent paint for beginners and to get a feel for tube paints to know if you're interested in getting further in the hobby... I feel like they are pretty easy to work with, very pigmented, easily re-wet.... I think some of the color names may not be super consistent with artist grade popular brands, and have some more filler, but I think it's good to get a few colors, play and learn about color mixing, before upgrading to artist grade more expensive paints 😎
Whoooooa, these are gorgeous!! That Cobalt turquoise!!!! 😍
They mix so well!!
I keep going back to their yellow green. It’s so bright snd lovely it’s the only grumbacher I have.
Those paints made really pretty mixes. They are gorgeous! Now it makes me want to try them, lol. Thank you to the donor of the paints.

So, do you know anything about how stable these colors are when exposed to light ?

Thank you! I’ve never heard of this brand so really helpful!
Have wondered about this brand myself, thank you!
Lovely. Just too expensive in my area.

Source?
everart, How do you know this?
@@kathleenmartell5891 , since everartokelli isn't answering you, I am going to assume that they are relying on Kim Crick's opinion of the line.
