Graphene uses the official Camera HALs and Stock Kernel Modules from Pixel - so when you install GCam (be it official APK or Mods) the results will be 100% the same as on Stock.
@@simons.5442 thanks a lot for sharing, do you have any links that explain that a bit more? Not that I don't believe it, I'd just like to read about it some more. Thanks!
@@sideofburritos source.android.com/devices/camera My above post was a bit misleading since the HAL's are not the drivers itself - instead they connect the Camera 2 API (the call of those are implemented within the Camera APK, the API itself within the ROM) to the drivers. If you check the official Graphene Git you'll find the Kernel receipts with the propitiary compiled vendor Kernel Modules mentioned and in another sub-repository they even ship a copy of them - these are the Drivers (BLOBs). Without those the Device would hardly work so unless they want to do complete reverse engineering or would be working with Open-Hardware then they're stuck with Vendor drivers. That is just one side of the medal - even if you use the Stock Kernel your ROM would need to implement the correct HAL in the ROM-Layer to speak correctly to the drivers. Long story short - since they stick / stay close to Stock and only target Pixel Devices they're fine (better put it like should be) and you won't have (should have) issues like on other devices that drive away and use older HALs or even only implement half of it. Mix that up with bugged implementation of Camera 2 API you have a big reason many devices work somewhat with GCAM Mods and some don't even work at all. In the end Google is pointing the way - here we have targeted development for their own devices exclusively so little room for driving off the way that would make sense (unless they go a 100% open source, which is nearly impossible)
This messed up on the 'flash release' stage. I'm now attempting the CL method. Depending on the browser I've had faults at various stages using this web method. imho this adds another potential payer of failure to the process compared to CL methods in general.
Hello, thank you very much for your amazing videos. Can I use this tutorial to install GrapheneOs on my CalyxOs pixel 6 phone or do I have to go back to the original Android rom in order to install GrapheneOs ? Thank you again for your amazing content !

I've actually been using CalyxOS on my Pixel 5 the last few weeks for an upcoming video review. Once I wrap that up I'm going to switch over to GrapheneOS on the 6 to give it a full test and make a video. I'll make sure to include the battery part
@@sideofburritos Thank you very much, I've seen a mixed bag of comments on the stock pixel 6 battery, so would love to know if its noticeably better than the stock version.

Thanks, glad it helped! For sure, that's on my list to do in the next 3-6 weeks. I have some research to do on it + testing before making a full video on it.
When you do the proper Pixel 6 + GrapheneOS review can you please make sure you do a comparison for pictures and video, hdr, low light, image stabilization between the stock Google cam app and the Graphene cam app? That would be AMAZING! Thanks!
You can install the official GCam App and Mods too and they're 100% the same - and make it forbid network access, for example to stop their shitty update-notifications. It's quite awesome. Since Graphene uses the official Camera HALs the results are 100% the same as on Stock.
I've gotten to the flash release point and now it seems the progress is stuck on "restarting device" the progress bar (which is full) hasn't moved in about 60 minutes. I have good internet speeds. Any suggestions ? Maybe push "flash release" again ?? Possibly refresh the Graphene OS Web Installer Webpage ??
That's what I would do, try pressing flash release again and if that doesn't work refresh the webpage. It's possible your phone lost contact with the browser. You could also try swapping the cable
@@sideofburritos Ok so I was able to figure it out partly. Every time it gets to a point where the "restarting device" load bar is full, if I take out the USB from the computer and then plug it back in, then it will continue on... Until I get to the Fastbootd point. Once it gets to this point and I reach a full "restarting device" load bar trying to take out the USB to plug it back in no longer works. I do have the option to scroll through the choices in blue and have played around with each option but can't seem to get one that will continue the flash release process. Any ideas ? I'm just using the standard Pixel 6 and I'm on a Mac
@@MrAye-bc4ms That is very odd. My only guesses with that are the cable or the browser. Are you using google chrome? I would try clearing all cache/history and make sure it's up to date. Also make sure the USB is plugged directly into the computer and not a USB hub or something along those lines.
@@sideofburritos Update on this. After trying 2 different USB cables I reached out to someone and they gave me a tip to try. This time I plugged it into a different USB chord that I forgot I had.... It worked perfectly fine.... what a relief. Thank you for helping out with what you could.

Nothing that I know of. Depending on which model you have, you could try to repair the screen yourself. I've never done it on a pixel, but when I've done it on other phones, ifixit had great guides.
I've only ever looked into the Nitro phone. 5-10 years ago the process was much more involved, so I think phone that had it preinstalled would have made more sense back then. The installation process is so simple now that I don't see any reason to buy a phone preloaded with it. I think for a majority of people, purchasing a Pixel and installing it themselves is the best option.
I just followed your tutorial and it was ridiculously easy, thank you. You know what would be cool 😎 are some vids on some suggested set ups in terms of apps e.g. secure messaging, storage, regular every day apps like banking and where the pitfalls with these are. Thanks again

@Side Of Burritos I get the error on the web interface when I try to flash the graphene OS into the phone. I tried to flash it again and the OS was successfully installed on my phone. Thank you for making the video.
What is the error it shows? 1. I would make sure the phone you're flashing is supported 2. It's possible the cable is faulty and the connection is intermittently failing
Awesome install video. Worked perfectly, except when everything finished installing and screen popped up with icons, they were all black and white, while yours shows some color in the icons. Granted I did this install on a Pixel 5 vs your vid doing it on a 6. Hope I didn't mess anything up but How do I get some color?
@@sideofburritos Yeah I spoke with GrapheneOS on Twitter. they explained what you just said as well. BUT, you know what's weird?... I tested it out and downloaded Twitter app, and it was blue just as you said, BUT, I also downloaded Brave Browser app and the weird part is that it only shows up colored in the screen that shows where all your apps are located, not the home screen...So in other words, when I drag my colored brave browser app to home screen, it leaves the color behind and makes it black and white on home just lke the Graphene stock apps. I don't mean to pick your brain all the time on this, but the more we know the more we can help everyone else so I appreciate your help. I been advertising Graphene in Twitter spaces a lot lately and donated to them as well.
Missed this reply, but after playing around with my phone recently, I believe that's because of how Themed icons work. If you enable the settings under Settings -> Wallpaper & style -> Themed icons. If you disable that, the icons will not be changed from their default. With that enabled, the icons on your home screen are themed and the icons in the app drawer remain stock and will be their default colors.
There needs to be more God damn information from the GrapheneOS team on how to deal with bullshit like I'm going through right now concerning buying a phone on Ebay that IS unlocked but still OEM is greyed out. Having to hunt this crap down, like how to use IMEI to find out what carrier the phone was with, crap like that. This Graphene team is too anti-social to truly make this software even grow. Makes me not want to support them anymore tbh.
It sounds like you purchased a phone that is carried unlocked, but not OEM unlocked. Connect the phone to Wi-Fi and if the OEM unlocking is still greyed out then you most likely have a Verizon pixel. The bootloader is lock by Verizon and there is no way to unlock it. Whether the phone is OEM unlocked or not is not the fault of any of the alternate phone OS's (CalyxOS, GrapheneOS etc.) That's something done by Verizon. You need to ask the seller (if you're buying used and not directly from Google), if the OEM unlock option available.

Thank you! Hmm, you *should* be able to install it over CalyxOS since it's done through fastboot. If it were me, I would probably flash back to stock first flash.android.com/. I also made a video on the process if you need it - th-cam.com/video/TIHG1j0yylc/w-d-xo.html
Looking to buy a pixel 6 and switch to GrapheneOS hows the battery life and camera compare to the stock OS?
I've actually been using CalyxOS on my Pixel 5 the last few weeks for an upcoming video review. Once I wrap that up I'm going to switch over to GrapheneOS on the 6 to give it a full test and make a video. I'll make sure to include the battery part
@@sideofburritos Thank you very much, I've seen a mixed bag of comments on the stock pixel 6 battery, so would love to know if its noticeably better than the stock version.
@Adonai Ra For sure, will do!
PLEASE note -- if you buy a new pixel to do this you need to connect it to wifi before it will let you OEM unlock it --
Wow seriously?
Can you not skip the wifi connection in setup?
Can you make a video on how to install the phone back to stock android. For when i want to sell it,it needs to be stock again
Just made one yesterday - th-cam.com/video/TIHG1j0yylc/w-d-xo.html
Hey very good video , it helped me alot. i have one favour to ask , could you pls make an video how to use whatsapp and other apps in Graphene OS while in Sandbox. Thank you, and have a great day.
Thanks, glad it helped! For sure, that's on my list to do in the next 3-6 weeks. I have some research to do on it + testing before making a full video on it.
@@sideofburritos Thank you very much .
When you do the proper Pixel 6 + GrapheneOS review can you please make sure you do a comparison for pictures and video, hdr, low light, image stabilization between the stock Google cam app and the Graphene cam app? That would be AMAZING! Thanks!
Will do!
You can install the official GCam App and Mods too and they're 100% the same - and make it forbid network access, for example to stop their shitty update-notifications. It's quite awesome. Since Graphene uses the official Camera HALs the results are 100% the same as on Stock.
Can we get system updates from graphineOS regularly??
What is the point of installing grapheneos as it will only be updated for a couple of years, 3 at most. Sou what do you do then?
Last time I tried to install graphene OS I couldn't figure out how to install the drivers so odd. But I wana try it
My phone is full what a good time to wipe it and start fresh just gotta log in again.
great guide. thanks to you all went well :D
Glad it helped!
Hello m’y Google pixel 7a doen’t Want to Connect to my pec,I changed the câble and made the updates, help me
Hey, Can I do this with a factory reset pixel 6 pro without a sim?
Which is better for Pixel 3, grapheneOS or CalyxOS? GrapheneOS doesn't support Pixel 3 anymore, but calyxOS is providing Android 13 for pixel 3.
I would check out divestos.org/ instead for your situation.
Is GrapheneOS made exclusively for Pixel phones or for any android?
Only Pixels at this time as those are the only phones that meet the projects hardware security requirements - grapheneos.org/faq#future-devices
Thank you for such a very clear and helpful video.
You're welcome! I try to keep things as straightforward as possible.
@@MrAye-bc4ms Thanks for the update! Very odd that you had to try so many difference cables, glad it worked at least. I guess that really shows just how much the quality of USB cables has suffered over the years.
I found a 6Pro with 256 storage and unlocked
Will this work on it?
I would confirm with the seller that the option of OEM unlocking is available. If it is, you'll be good to go!
@@sideofburritos thank you
I founs out today also if you are running a beta verion of android it wont unlock for some reason. i went back to stable of 13 and worked perfect. mine is the tmobile variant which i paid off
Can you make a how to mine Moneroocean for ubuntu. Please
I have just bought a new pixel pro 6 and yeup it OEM unlock greyed out so long guess l’m sending it back to Amazon.
Can you duel boot? So I keep stock android on 1, graphene on another and switch them on the go with the bootloader menu?
No, that's not something supported.
The bottom of my acreen is damaged. Is there a feature to creare a deadzone on the bottom of thw screen where the screen is dmaaged ?
Nothing that I know of. Depending on which model you have, you could try to repair the screen yourself. I've never done it on a pixel, but when I've done it on other phones, ifixit had great guides.
Have you looked at Blackphone Privy 2 or Nitro phone? The latter, in particular, seems like you may just be paying for someone to list Graphene OS
@@sideofburritos Thank you :) Just got a Pixel 6 to try this on. Fingers crossed.
I just followed your tutorial and it was ridiculously easy, thank you.
You know what would be cool 😎 are some vids on some suggested set ups in terms of apps e.g. secure messaging, storage, regular every day apps like banking and where the pitfalls with these are. Thanks again
I followed the prequisites, but couldn't get past unlock, laptop gets an incompatible device error.
I was on 5G and not wifi (would nthis matter)
Should I enable USB debugging?
Should i remove my SIM card?
What OS are you on? Easiest thing it to try another USB cable, usually that's one of the main causes for issues. Also, make sure you're using one of the support browsers.
How easy is it to convert back to normal google os ?
Very easy, you can just use flash.android.com. I might make a video on it this week since a few people have requested the same in the past
i did all the steps but when I click "unlock bootloader" it says Error: Access denied
I have ubuntu, I run the the line mentioned before in the terminal.
Hmm, make sure you're using Chromium (not the one bundled with Ubuntu) as that one is broken, and you'll experience issues with the web install.
@@sideofburritos Yeah, it was chromium. I also tried in another laptop with Ubuntu but I couldn't do it either.
I tried Calyx os and it worked straight away.
That's my OS, I'm happy with it but there's a few things I don't like.
Does this rom support face unlock bro?
I haven't seen an option for it in the settings
Can u still use regular celltowers for data in countries like new zealand?
I don't know about New Zealand specifically, but in the US, yes! Nothing should change with the way your phone connects to towers.
Kiwi here. Yes works as any other custom ROM you'd install. My Skinny mobile network works fine.
@@consuminglight thank you
I get an error: The requested file could not be read, typically due to permission problems that have occurred after a reference to a file was acquired
Did that error show in the web interface or on the phone?
@Side Of Burritos I get the error on the web interface when I try to flash the graphene OS into the phone. I tried to flash it again and the OS was successfully installed on my phone. Thank you for making the video.
@@Burninhell247 Glad to hear, and you're welcome!
Can I do this on a 6a?
Thank you for this vid
Do I have to turn on Usb debugging on the phone?
You shouldn't need to.
Getting an error at the "download release" spot, any advice?
What is the error it shows?
1. I would make sure the phone you're flashing is supported
2. It's possible the cable is faulty and the connection is intermittently failing
Perfect bud
I try to download release but keep saying error 😭😭
I would try clearing cache/cookie, restarting your browser, turning your Wi-Fi on/off, and then trying again. Sounds like a networking error possibly.
Ty so much I deleted my browser and reconnect my wifi and turn off my vpn and work 🍀🍀
Excellent.

@@sideofburritos ...Gonna try loading Graphene on a LG V40, whether it works or not it's worth a try.
Funciona con whatsap?
Si. Es posible que se requieran servicios de juego en espacio aislado para una funcionalidad completa, pero funcionará.
*2:48** The guys thinks everyone in the world watching this video is an American.* LOOL
It’s true. Verizon trip an efuse in the CPU to permanently disable bootloader unlocking. I don’t know if other phone carriers do this.
Very irritating uptick at the end of every sentence. You're not a teenager anymore.
Thanks for the feedback
@@sideofburritos You're welcome. I hope this helps th-cam.com/video/qlAL2CMMp14/w-d-xo.html
Your comment is very irritating and irrelevant
@@johnemmons9087 Don't be a p**sy.
He sounds totally normal to me..
Thanks! The colored icons are apps other than stocks apps. The GrapheneOS stock apps are monochrome which is why there's no colors.
@@sideofburritos Yeah, I hear ya bro.
I appreciate all your vids btw. I'm just irritated at the time consumed by having to find the right phone just to gain the right to privacy back from tech tyranny. I just wish more people were vocal about it and we had more options.
Thanks for all your help!!! Really do appreciate it! Subscribed
