Hi, if you plug in 4 into (x-4), you will get 0; and if you plug in 4 into (-x+4), it is still 0. So either way you will get (4+4) - 0. However, by plugging in, -4 or 4 into the equations, it won't help to determine which equation (+ or -) to be chosen. So most of the time, we don't plug in the limit (-4 and 4), we just plug in any number in the range, says -3, -2 , 0, 3 excluding the -4 and 4 since these 2 points(-4 and 4) are the intersection points between 3 domains. Hopefully it helps.
