    You can change the shutter to 160 you need to look at the documentation where it talks about advanced functions. You hold the mode button and power use the up arrow to get to cs2 then you can change to .3. I just bought the same light meter a week ago. I love it. Works great for video as well.

      Scott Burrow yep I went in there and saw. I don’t use it much as I found that shooting in studio its best to set the camera to my cameras max flash sync speed

    One other thing to keep in mind for those watching is that this meter is set up in 10ths. So when you see a reading of 5.6 with a 2 after it (5.6 2) the accurate fstop is 6.3 not 5.6. This set up gives a more accurate reading its like measuring something to the inch as opposed to the foot.

    • @BrandonColePhotography
      @BrandonColePhotography  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Its still measuring the light intensity actually at that point its subjective. If I measure and it comes to 5.6 6 I'm pushing more towards that 6.3 but I can still make small adjustments to get back to 5.6 like move back or forward, etc.

    I had to break out my light meter (LM) when I shot my daughter's homecoming dance - no exposure guessing. Set them up, shoot them, move on. Bam! I also use my LM to meter outdoor lighting when shooting wildlife to set exposure for the light falling on the subject and tweak from if needed.

    I use mine quite a bit on location as well. Set my exposure for how I want the background and then dial in the flash power to match my camera settings. For me it's way faster than taking photos and adjusting till it's right. Yes lighting changes with clouds and such but that happens no matter what.

    I'm pretty sure that light meter can go to all the shutter speeds all the way up to 1/8000th. Looks like your meter is set to one stop increments instead of 1/3 stop increments.

    Great video. What is also a good and cheaper tool, is using a gray card (about $10) to set exposure. Similar to the meter, the model holds the card towards the source of the light. Take a picture of the gray cards (everything in frame). Once done, read the histogram and adjust accordingly until the histogram is in the middle. With practice you can set exposure in about 2-3 shots.

    • @BrandonColePhotography
      @BrandonColePhotography  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Vince V I am familiar but that’s so much more work then a light meter

    • @Methodical2
      @Methodical2 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BrandonColePhotography Agree. Give me the light meter all the time. As a matter of fact, I could use myself to meter the light before the person gets there and be ready to shoot when they arrive, which is a good thing if you have little time to work with them. If all you are doing is 3/4 or head shots, you can mark the spot on the floor where you took the reading and have them on the same mark.
      As a matter of fact, you don't even need a grey card do what you suggest, just start with an exposure, take a shot, read the histogram and adjust accordingly. Bam, you saved that $10.

    thanks for another good video brandon.i don't know if you know this?i have the l-308s light meter from sekonic,and I have set the incremental measurement to 1/3 stops.not sure if your model has this option too,but ,if you press the mode and power button at the same time,you will get a screen on the light meter with the option to change the increments on how the meter reads light.set this to 0.3,to read in 1/3 increments of light(assuming your camera is set to read in 1/3 stops too).this would help for a more accurate reading of the light out-put from all your artificial lighting.hope this is of some help to you?all the very best.derek.

      Derek bell-jack Yea it’s in the settings. I can set it to such but in studio I’ve kinda found that shooting at your cameras maximum flash sync speed so shooting at 1/250 I’ve found is the best at shooting in studio.

    The key is you as the photographer wants to set a specific aperture, the light meter will tell you how much you have to increase/decrease the power on your flash to obtain the perfect exposure.

Do you always match the F number given by the meter? Or u play slightly higher or lower depending on the artistic choice of overexposed look etc ? Sorry for my long questions

    the way you explained it is for an average exposure
    if you want to meter the light source, you need the flat dome pointed to the light source not under the model's chin
    i will make a video about it...

    • @kevinlfisher1083
      @kevinlfisher1083 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I mostly put it under the chin but like you said point it towards the light while under.

    • @BrandonColePhotography
      @BrandonColePhotography  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Petru B. It’s not an average exposure. It’s better to meter how your model will actually pose which is why we put it under the models chin. I want to meter how she’s gonna stand . I’m not turning her to the source. Now technically whether u turn her or put it under the chin u will almost always get the same fstop. The light dome has to be turned away a lot to get another reading

    • @petrub27
      @petrub27 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@BrandonColePhotography brother , no, you need to meter each ligh source, that will give a ratio; then, you meter under the chin for the average

    • @BrandonColePhotography
      @BrandonColePhotography  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Petru B. That’s only when you have more then one light that’s hitting your model that will give you a 1:1 or what you ratio. There is no need when u have 1 light bro but use your however u wish my brother
