Just finished it. I wasn’t alive in the 90s but there is a real timeless quality to Hate. I feel like any young man can relate to Buddy Bradley for better or worse

Like Ed mentioned in another video these are some of the only comics to make me crack up, laugh out loud style. Also Rick Altergott’s Doofus. Great job as always!

KERN! I loved my Hardcore video. Jim "Foetus" Thirlwell did a lot of the music, and I fell so in love that I formed a band and got signed the the record label that used to put out his music back in those days (Some Bizzare)

The Kern material has been collected on Bluray (there is a DVD of some of it too...) Hate is hands down my favorite comic of all time.

Nice to revisit this. It'd been years. Such a slice of time he captured. Motorbooty callout as well, Dancey rules!

I’ve been eagerly waiting for the Kayfabe review of Hate! Peter Bagge is my all-time favorite cartoonist. Here’s hoping the Complete Neat Stuff & Hate make it under the microscope soon too!
Also, super stoked for Hulk Grand Design!

Always great to see a cartoonist able to just be themselves, without being leavened by a desire to replicate popular styles. "My Pad and Welcome to it" is a take-off on James Thurber's "My World and Welcome to it" but I'm guessing that Bagge is basing it on the short-lived sitcom of the same name where the protagonist is a Thurber-like cartoonist. I think it's from the late 60's; how old is Bagge anyway?

YES!! I just finished a two week HATE binge. Finishing volume 3 of the complete HATE box set last night. I couldn't put it down after the ball got rolling. All the crazy that unfolds throughout the series and all the characters (sometimes inspired by real people) are pure gold. The look on Buddy's face when the monster truck finally shows up with the tiny rear tires while Butch is just cracking up about it floored me. I wasn't not expecting that as I'd been waiting for it to finally show up wanting to know the story behind why Buddy had this tuck. By the end of this wild ride I was looking for the perfect Buddy Bradley image for a tattoo and right there on the inside of the cover is the perfect image of him giving ol Daniel Clowes some bunny ears so I'm thinking I mite have to pull the trigger on that..

I first discovered P. Bagge (not sure if that's ever meant to be a joke, but it makes me giggle every time) when I was in animation school, and the focus was on the 'turn-around'. How the character had to be visually consistent from every angle, every time.
Needless to say, being confronted with an artist who's characters were the absolute opposite of what was being driven into my head what the shot-in-the-arm I needed at the time. Taught me so much about the importance of character ICONOGRAPHY over just translating shapes. Brilliant stuff.
Added to that was his refreshingly confident, 'fuck it all' attitude and I've been in love for years.

By 1992, with my hatred of mainstream Liefeld/McFarlane/Lee clone comics, I was all in on the B&W indy books, like Brubaker’s Lowlife and Los Bros’ Love & Rockets, etc. I probably picked up Hate around #9 or 10, but Fantagraphics kept every issue in print of comics they were currently publishing. You could easily track down every issue, so a lot of my indy comics pre-92 were all later printings. But I still have them all! (And it’s funny that I still remember Lisa as Buddy’s long suffering girlfriend)

As a long time reader of both Critters and Usagi, it was Kim Thompson who was the editor. In fact until this channel I had never heard of Gary Groth.

Shel Silverstein was a pretty dope cartoonist. It would be sick to see you guys do a breakdown of the finer points of his style.

I live north of Seattle and I bought a HATE sticker at a rocker store called The Experience.. I've still got it on my wall 27 years later. I didn't know it was a comic for years. I was just an angry kid.

I just commissioned Bagge to do a sketch of old Buddy for me a while back. I love the end result. Such a great cartoonist.

I'm a 44 year old Portlander, and I'll tell ya the cities of the Pacific NW were pretty dumpy and grimey back in those days, and there were real lumberjacks who could be really scary pricks.

Hate and Angry Youth Comix were the BIIIIIG highlights of my teenage years though I always preferred Peter Bagges stuff because I think he was a better artist than Johnny Ryan? Always fun going down memory lane

Hate and Eightball came into view for me at the same time. I didn't discover them until '93 and they blew my mind. The apex of 20th century comics

I was first introduced to this world via The Bradleys collection when I was 16. It wasn't until almost a decade later that I actually read the entire hate series. He is one of the greatest storytellers, and I re-read Hate every couple years. The 2 paperback collections are the perfect size for that. What kills me is that the early Bradleys stuff isn't reprinted in those, the last couple stories are the perfect lead in to the series.

One of my all-time favorite creators and comic series. HATE was one of the first "alt" comics that drew my attention away from all the dross being put out by Marvel, DC, and Image back in the day.
