About a month ago I took some cutting from a Rose of Sharon and gave them a scrap and some root hormone and they are now leaving out for me real nice, about a 1/2" of leaf showing. I have kept them in a 6" pot with a plastic storage bag over it to keep it moist, they are in some Miracle-Gro potting mix. My question is how long should I keep them tented like that? Thanks, I have learned sooo much from your videos and I really enjoy them. I am in NY Zone 5A, I have these cutting on my heated, morning sunny back porch area.
I love their flowers. I have a white one with a red center & a pretty lavender one. I grow them in large tubs so mine are not invasive, just beautiful.
Can I prune back a green Rose of Sharon after the flowering is done? We get harsh winters in MA, so I can't imagine pruning then. Most of my flowers are now around the top half of the bushes, which are about 14' high. it's green down below, just not many blossoms. I don't think I even knew TO prune these guys!! thanks!
Mike, I am a FIRM believer in your style of pruning! I had some plants that suffered through a drought here in Georgia last year. Me and the wife thought we would have to did some plants up and throw them away. After seeing your videos about pruning I pruned them back and within a week or so we saw all this new growth! It is amazing how easy it was. Now, with the rain and pruning the plants look better than when I bought them! Thank you! Also, when will membership be open??
Thank you! Your video was very informative and helpful. I am a novice gardener and i just replanted a rose bush and and a rose of Sharon and now both are shocked and drooping! I live in Texas and the soil is mostly clay so it's very mucky and I'm not sure if this will affect their viability. I'm hoping to prune both back by half to see if it helps. Thank you for the information.
Thanks for this helpful video. We've grown our Rose of Sharon to be too large, so now the blooms weigh down the bush and it drapes all over our yard. This fall, we'll take this video to the plant and prune, asking for forgiveness; but maybe we can save some of the cuttings. Thank you.

Do you have a video on pruning back a mature Rose Of Sharon? I have a Bush (tree) that never was pruned and is out of control. I need to shape it so it stay off the front sidewalk and the path to the house. Most videos only deal with the Hibiscus that is a plant and not a bush/tree. Thanks Tim

Depends upon the locale, particular location within the landscape and application. What are you trying to accomplish? Are we talking about a shrub hedge, a focal point, or what? I usually see these shrubs utilized as informal hedge borders in older rural landscapes. Otherwise they are generally present as a consequence of their invasive nature.
Mike, I live on the in western New York. Near PA. Border. When they plowed my driveway they hit my rose of sharyn. I want to save as much as I can. Broke a branch off and skun the rest. Help please
Great information Mike. I wish your doc would have your ventral hernia. or abdominal wall repaired. It tends to prevent proper breathing later on, when you need that extra energy for your old age.. Please have ir checked.. xox
I can't believe anyone is still using hibiscus syriacus in new landscapes. It's highly invasive and generally considered a low quality shrub with limited value. I see it mainly around older homes. It has no fall color and appears quite ungainly if not well pruned. I know it flowers at a time of the season when not a lot of color is being produced by other plants, but there are much better plant choices that can be made.
Cankuwicasa: Has anyone ever told you you're rather rude with your comments..... perhaps you should take all your knowledge & opinions of what is & isn't fashionable in landscape design and start your own channel....or don't you have the initiative or creativity, maybe all you can do is make snarky comments on other people's channels. See, I myself want some Rose of Sharon because they won't die if planted near a Black Walnut tree, so maybe you should just keep your stupid snarky comments to yourself
Yes, rose of Sharon does have an attractive individual flower. However, they don't exhibit any other notable positive characteristics. Hence their lack of popularity in contemporary landscape design. One dimensionality coupled with invasiveness render them second class citizens in the garden.

(No seeds to grow) Also many single flower varieties are grown which are more compact and produce few to no seeds. A added bonus, these plants bloom much more because they don't spend time producing seeds.

This same method also works with Crape Myrtle, although I usually bury more of the cutting, only leaving about an inch above ground.

You just cut it down, say to 12 inches. Its immortal.

JerseyCityGirl9 In Toronto, all the Italians plant them. The Italians prune and top all of their trees and have topiary gardens... I hate the look!
