    The large artificially produced wakes are causing erosion, even in sections of the river that have no homes where vegetation was removed, Champouge Park has had shore line damage. Sewer lines underneath house boats have been broken by wakes from wake boats. Some sections of the Willamette River are too narrow for this type of wake. The wakes do cause erosion. The wakes are so large that they make use of the river by other Oregonians problematic.

    The law is a captain is responsible for his or her wake. For the damage or injury caused by that wake. In general, a power craft must maintain a distance of 100 yards away from an oar powered craft, and/or slow to a no wake speed when passing. Look it up.

    These wakes are a lot like second-hand smoke. It affects people who did not ask for the wakes or the smoke from someone else.
    It is fine for anyone to do what they want unless it negatively affects someone else.

    I had never thought of this problem before but I can see that the waves generated affect everyone else who is trying to enjoy the river and also its ecosystem. Does regular water skiing cause the same harmful waves?

    • @bertkrages3999
      @bertkrages3999  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Regular water skiing generally requires boats that make small wakes. It used to be popular on the Willamette before wakesurfing became popular. I know one resident on the Lower Willamette who is a lifelong water skier but is no longer able to ski on the river. His dock has also suffered serious damage from wakesurfing wakes.

    Simply put, the Willamette River (Upper or Lower) is NOT the place for wake-surfing or other high-energy wake-producing sports. Just like we don't allow Formula-1 racing on I5 or land 747's at small local airports, heavy wake boats DO NOT belong on our narrow, busy river. They need to go to large lakes, the Columbia River or off-shore. Fishing has become more & more difficult, public safety is being threatened, shoreline and fragile fish & wildlife habitat is being destroyed, property (docks, ramps, other watercraft) are getting increasingly damaged. Just over the past several years, damage costs for repair, replacement, remediation along the river has exceeded over $879,000 - mostly coming out of the pockets of property owners. The WSIA says “Boat owners are responsible for any damage caused by their operation”. I want to know, where do we send our bill?

    Some years ago residents of Wilsonville, Oregon filed a lawsuit against the state of Oregon and it was mainly to do with Wake creating boats. The lawsuit went to court and wake boats and any method of putting weight on the bow to create a big wake were banned. This was from the 219 bridge Newberg to a bridge in Canby. Guess where the wake boats are now down river and up river causing of the closed area causing havoc with anyone using the river. Some areas of the river are narrow and creates dangerous wakes that impact others on the river.
    Ski boats don't make as big of a wake but pull skiers at a slower speed plowing through the water. I had someone comment that to not compare ski boats to wake boats. Ski boats aren't the problem. Any time a boat repeatedly goes back and forth with the bow pushing water creates a wake. A boat on plane leaves less wake then a boat half powered plowing through the water. Most people pulling a skier are not at speeds fast enough to get on plane.
    We were anchored on the Willamette River when ski boats showed up and their wakes started hitting us. Eventually turned the area along the bank to mud. We even had trouble pulling our anchor because of our boat bouncing all over. A number of trips we had to leave because of ski boats showing up and skiing right by us. I also have noticed responsible people ski below us and not by us. Unfortunately a lot of people are very inconsiderate of others and ski right by anchored boats fishing.
    One trip we were anchored in an area with around ten other boats. A guy with is apparently teenage daughter and her friends pulled a skier right into all the anchored boats. Then did the classic whip around to pick up the skier again. The girl fell three times. I could not believe someone was that big of a jerk.
    I also talked to a husband and wife that have a nice Bass Boat. They told me a Wake Boat went by them while they were fishing out on the deck of their boat and almost flipped them out of their boat. I have a friend who was fishing with a friend and his son. They had a wake boat put their boat on the bank. They had to get out of their boat and were luckily able to push boat back in the water. Otherwise they would of been in a very bad situation.
    We fish on bad weather days and when the ski boats show up we stop going. The frustration and dealing with rude inconsiderate people is just too much to deal with. Plus the lawsuit to ban wake boats down river and around Wilsonville has put them where we fish. It is a no contest for anglers dealing with these wake boats or ski boats and other water sports where people are very inconsiderate of others. I realize there are some good people who believe in sharing the river and being considerate of others.

    I can confirm this and much more damage that has already happened and cannot repaired - ever. I and my family have lived here since 1973. At that time and since, there have been fishing boats, skiing boats, canoes, kayaks, all manner of other use without destruction of the environment. It's just been these last 5-8 years with the heavy-weighted and ballasted boats that the undercutting of the bank has happened, elimination of the local species, and causing constant turbidity in the water that is unlawful if you're a regular user or property owner. We have lost old-growth timber that dangerously fall into the river when the undercut destroys their root systems. And we can't repair our own property because the laws are more strict and more enforced on us, than those mis-using the Newberg Pool. There are many other places these 6-figure boats can be enjoyed, not at the irreparable cost of the Willamette River Greeway.

Tubes arent even supposed to be pulled faster than 20 mph max, typically the average speed is between 10-16 mph... oh wait, thats the same speed as wakesurfing. Google it yourself. Nobody is pulling their young kids around at 25 mph on plane in a boat.

      I have ample experience with wake boats. Basically I think they are a worthless and expensive nuisance. Now, having said that, Captain, ALL boats are legally and financially responsible for their wake. That IS the law. If your intentional wake causes an inexperienced kayaker to tumble and drown, you may be held liable for manslaughter or negligent homicide. Especially if you have passed within the 100 yard exclusion zone of an oar powered craft.

    • @ThePeaPodFamily
      @ThePeaPodFamily ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Sailor376also you have to prove that wake was from that specific craft. Good luck with that. Kayaks should never ever be on the water with power vessels. the same goes with Standup Paddle boards.

    • @Sailor376also
      @Sailor376also ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ThePeaPodFamily We all have to get along. Using the same logic,, no wake surfing powercraft should be on the water with kayaks or canoes. Who do we forbid? First, there are already 'rules of the road' in place. Over simplified,, sail over power, and oar over sail. The highest and first priority is oar,,,, with several exceptions,, fishing vessels , restricted by draft, restricted by maneuverability, not under command,, downbound,, ,,, etc. So you have a double difficulty and an often valid complaint. The kayak has the right of way over you. Period. But the experienced kayaker will not be out there in an area with lots of wake boats. They have experience, they are smart,,,, the ones that are out there are VERY likely to be new, unskilled, un-knowledgeable. So you have to play nice,, with a newbie who doesn't know how or where to be, little skill with the craft,,, but Oh My,, how that Karen will scream at you. I do not envy you in that case. Me,, I either have the skill to be there and comfortable,,, or I am smart enough,, I ain't goin' out.
      Where you will find me in complete agreement, kayaks, canoes, row boats, paddle boards ALL must have some skill and be aware of where they have launched their craft. I have paddled my canoe with hundreds of powerboats and hundreds of wake surfers. I am good with a canoe. My only difficulties in that respect have been when a large power boat passes closer than necessary. On Lake Powell, (Mead, Havasu, Mohave, Flaming Gorge, Elwell, Lake Huron, Michigan, Erie,, etc.) as in most cases, power boats are supposed to pass at least 100 yards off,, and /or drop to a no wake speed when passing close. Both work. The jerks that intentionally buzz you,, are just that,, jerks. A GoPro could easily be the proof in a court of law IF something serious were to result from that. But to agree with you again,, that GoPro had better show malicious intent or outright incompetence.
      In 60 years on the water,, I can think of only two that should have been ticketed or arrested. Just 2 in 60 plus years. Two, out of something less than a million? (I cannot imagine the number is actually that high but several hundred thousand passages? Yeah, no question.) We all use the water,,, we should always cut each other slack.

    This is a joke. Let's be honest, it's not about protecting the lake from erosion or the environment. What's disgusting is that they're saying the wake boat owners are the rich a$$holes, when the reality of this legislation is that the homeowners are upset that their 20-year-old docks and boat houses require what they deem as premature maintenance due to larger waves than the on-the-water structures were designed to withstand. The people with million-dollar houses are upset that they have to spend a few thousand to maintain their docks and boathouses, and like all people who own homes on a body of water, they feel entitled to dictate how the water is used.

    Please stop lumping wakeboarding in with surfing. Wakeboard wakes are smaller and the boat is on plane similar to most ski/ cruise boats. Also wakeboard beginners don’t need a big wake to learn so only the intermediate advanced riders use a larger wakeboard wake.

    Seems silly to limit wake boats. The hull is designed to more shape the wake and displacement/speed produce the amplitude you are worried about. In fact professional wake surfers have used yachts to surf bigger waves. Probably a max weight or speed limit to displacement only if over xxx lbs would be less inflammatory to others and change the wear on the shore more

    • @christian6326
      @christian6326 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed. Limiting operating displacement would be good. However, hull geometry plays a major role in the focusing of wave energy, not just the shape.
      Perhaps having designated wake surf areas would help.
      Also agreed that big yachts create very large wakes which may damage property and shoreline and ecosystem and thereby generally degrade the quality of the waterway, eventually reducing tourism and property values, and maybe further, appropriate, focused regulation is warranted to help designate proper areas for safe operation of vessels based on measuring and classifying their operational characteristics.
