This is one of the best ear training videos I've found. Stephanie, you clearly have some teaching gifts. The pacing, the clarity, and the explanations within each section are outstanding. Thanks so much!
I've never practiced ear training before, but came across this vid just before a walk and decided listen while out on it, and it was incredibly helpful! Was getting quality right about 70% of the time and even started getting some of the inversions right towards the end. Thanks so much, will be checking out your other vids.
Thanks for making this excellent training video - i've just been learning 7th arpeggios and realized i can't tell the differences very well. This video is helping immensely!
Fully agree with other comments: this is the best ear training video on TH-cam that I can use on the go! Question for others: I wonder if everyone finds singing all the individual notes on your own without hearing the arpeggiated notes is harder than identifying the chord quality itself? That's been my experience, so I'm not able to identify the inversions without hearing the individual notes played.
OMG, the 2nd half helped so much i perfected it for first try (exclude the inversions) im so amazed. Just feeling the tension of the notes is like an instinct hssdjkfhskjdfh amazing! thank you very much. Will practice more!
Here it is, 2022, and yes, ear training is still an issue. I plan to come back and drill this every day, until I can identify those pesky 7ths perfectly. Thanks so much for putting this resource out for struggling Ear Training I students :)
So awesome, well layed out, I expected to lose focus really quickly and I watched the entire thing o.o Helps that I did way better than I expected to, lol
Great stuff! Thanks a bunch. (Audio quality is so-so, but that’s obviously a secondary consideration.) I took the usual Freshman and Sophomore Theory and Ear Straining 🤪 waaay back in the mid-‘80s. After decades of work-work-work, I’ve recently checked back on my ear-training level, and it was utterly humiliating! Nevertheless, on these particular exercises, I did much much better than I expected!
Hello! Augmented 7th chords aren't really around in standard harmony. I do have a video on augmented vs. diminished chords in my ear training playlist, which you can find on my page. I'm glad you found it helpful!
oh wow what a great lesson! Im in 4th semester theory and yet my aural skills are abysmal, and not for lack of trying. These videos will help me out , thank!
Oh my god that’s me and I’m stressing about it haha, I went online to take a practice exam and every single Minor I got incorrect for putting Major, and vise versa. I can differentiate the difference in the notes but I can’t pinpoint a M and m :(
The 1st inversion of M7 corresponds to a minor6 in root position and 1st inversion of m7 corresponds to a major6 in root position. Adding the 7 ‘flips’ the expected quality of major/minor

I really love what you have put out into the world and listen while I walk. I'm a fan of Johnny Marr, Wes Montgomery and The Aristocrats.
Thank you very much. This video was really helpful. The way you go through it made me clear the path 👌
I've listened to several of your videos and have noticed a change. Merci beaucoup.
It's so interesting that you think the major 7 is so distinctive. I confuse major and minor 7ths SO much, they sound so incredibly similar to me.
This was super helpful! And yes, more half dim 7 and dim 7 practice would be amazing!

Thanks a lot! In 3weeks I have to do exam and listening chords and intervals are the only thing I'm scared of not passing❤️
I'm studying barbershop arranging and this video is super helpful. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!

Great video! Thanks so much for the practice. This is the best one I’ve seen for ear training class prep on 7th chords.
Glad it was helpful!
This was really helpful! I would love more practice identifying 7th chords.
Here it is, 2022, and yes, ear training is still an issue. I plan to come back and drill this every day, until I can identify those pesky 7ths perfectly. Thanks so much for putting this resource out for struggling Ear Training I students :)
It's a process for sure!
thank you so much for this. ❤️❤️
being a self taught musician this helps a lot.
i dont know how but i got most of them right. 😅😅
Thank you , Stephanie I just came across this lesson and I was quite good! almost 80% right, but sometimes half and fully diminished was difficult.
Studying these like crazy for my class! Thank you- I'd love more quizzes!
Thank you. This is just what I need.
Great lesson. Thanks so much🎉
thank you so much! this will be so helpful
This is awesome! Thank you. My ear was better than I thought. At times I new immediately the chord. Will continue listening to this video.
Thanks. This is great practice. The pace is perfect.
Very helpful. I'd like to request a video of Maj7, Maj6, Maj7+, Maj7b5, Min7, mMaj7, mMaj7b5, Dim7, Half Dim7, Dom7, Dom7#5, Dom7b5, and Sus7 chords.
I always have Trouble distinguishing maj6 with min7 and min6 and min7b5 of the root is not very clear.
Wtf you just inventing chords
Thanks for the hard work that goes into these videos!

Excellent Teaching
Amazing exercise. It’s helping me so much. Thank you very much!
Thanks for this ! So I can learn the Anglo-Saxon definitions of the sevenths. :-)
Wonderful! Exactly what I was looking for. Many thanks!
Thank you so much for posting this!!
Thank you for your efforts. I only have a little difficulty with 7 as apposed to 7th.
Great stuff! Thanks a bunch. (Audio quality is so-so, but that’s obviously a secondary consideration.)

Amazing job!
AWESOME!
Thank you for this useful video!
thanks, this is helpful. please do many more.
I have problems with minor seventh chords and half-diminished seventh chords. Fully diminished chords are easy--they're the "Snidley Whiplash" chords.
Very helpful! Thanks a lot!
this was great! the microphone quality is a little weird but super helpful! please do more!
thank you soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo MUCH STEF!!!!!!!
Awesome video.
Thank you! Very good video! Could have included the augmented chord too :)

Stephanie Douglass yeah!
Thanks, that was good. inversion m7 is tricky for me
Life saver!
Thank you thats a great recording
Helpful thanks!
Thanks 🙏
oh wow what a great lesson! Im in 4th semester theory and yet my aural skills are abysmal, and not for lack of trying. These videos will help me out , thank!
Thank you for this!!!
Half diminished 7 is the choo-choo sound!
Hi do you have any more ear training videos ?
Very helpful thank you !
Great thank you
Oof.. still have to work on distinguishing dim7 and half dim7 in inversions..
I guess Min Maj7 chords speak for themselves 😁 (nice video!)
More 7th chords ear training please!
the higher the root note, the harder it gets for me to recognise the chord, is this common?
Thank you. very very useful really. Anything similar ?
Very helpful
Thank you for this video!(:
Am I weird for thinking M7 sounds sadder than m7?
Oh my god that’s me and I’m stressing about it haha, I went online to take a practice exam and every single Minor I got incorrect for putting Major, and vise versa. I can differentiate the difference in the notes but I can’t pinpoint a M and m :(
I can hear it too.

Good Stephanie 👍👍
Yes, thank you! A focus on dim 7 vs half dim 7 would be great
Great...
Excellent, basically..
I thought Dim and 7b5 are the same. How do I manage this?
Half dim and 7b5 are the same
What's the meaning of 'stay out of treble' in the description?🤔
'Stay musical, stay mindful and stay out of treble'...
Treble clef - music theory joke :)
😀
The only ones i have trouble with are m7 and M7. I always think an m7 is a M7
That's a tricky one! For me it's the crunch between the root and the 7th in the M7 chord. They tend to feel "floaty" to me.
hm there are no augmented?
Nope! If you stack a major 3rd on an augmented triad, it will be the same as the root of the chord.
😊
Stop talking so much till you clear your sinuses
What the hecc?😂
And all the commercials, turn off!!!!
Had to buy youtube premium.
Oh god, I'm suffering with the inversions
