The route has about 20000 metres of climbing (~60000 feet), so I would say you're still right. take a 20 kph pace (~13 mph), work 8 hours a day, and you're there. It might be that he wants to smash that estimate, under-promise and over-deliver. Who knows.
Good luck. It’s good to have a healthy bit of apprehension before you start. I have ridden a bit of Ireland and there are not a lot of clean sight lines, so stay very lit up and beware of cars, especially at night. They will not be looking for you and a lot of people are returning from pubs after hours.
I like his bike and c'mon, nothin' but fun, his riding all that distance and making a movie about it. I'm looking forward to the scene where he is spraying champagne in victory lane. Or hoisting his flask of Baileys and calling it a win.
Late to the video but enjoyed the set up, great ideas as I am a noob this yr. Christmas around the corner, Hopefully I can get a "bundles set" on some gear to build up my bike. Currently on a 2018 Synapse 56 105 carbon w/ disc. I see the next video is you riding the Transatlantic. Going there now.
Professional flashlights, the ones for (1×) 18650 batteries, last 24hrs at 50lm. Rechargeable while you sleep; or buy them where smokers go for their e-smoke stuff. Further, a 6€ Sigma red back light, connected to one of these (some tinkering required), will go for 40hrs+ straight. Opus one-bay charger doubles as USB battery-pack. - Gearing? I think it's spot on.
Worth mentioning SON makes a 100 x 15 and a 110 x 15 dynamo hub. I noticed he's got a SON on that bike. I'm not sure why getting a new fork made sense.
That's also what I remember. But maybe the type of hub that Hunt puts in the wheels is not available in that diameter? SON makes different types of generators.
@@jochenkraus7016 I'm familiar with SON's catalogue. They don't make a lot of thru axle hubs, it's all super simple to interpret. This video is just advertising that fork. There's no reason why Hunt couldn't lace a 110 x 15 SON hub in a wheel.
@@Bayplaces This was a genuine mistake on my part. The wheel had been in their build queue before I realised the axle incompatibility. Hunt don't build 15mm axle SON dynamo hubs unfortunately.
interesting choices on the gear. I probably would have chosen a hikers headlamp and tail light lighting setup as batteries are cheap and readily available on route. Smart call on the gearing with the 1x. Rarely have I complained of being under geared but suffer one climb over geared and changes get made. I would be interesting to see what worked and what gets changed after the ride. I do remember Mike Curiak's advice for the Great Divide Race " If I did it again I'd wear wool, not plastic, but frankly I wouldn't do it again"
Yes João is right, it is the apidura racing front pack. It has handy pockets on the sides. www.bikeradar.com/features/apiduras-racing-range-is-designed-for-audax-aficionados/
I'm interested to know how you get on with the gearing you have choose 38t x 10-42 as I'm doing the Pan Celtic Race next month and this is what I'm planning to run. I'll follow your dot on Trackleaders. Good luck.
Hi Tony, best of luck on the Pan Celtic, it looks amazing (maybe a future event for me to ride...) I actually really enjoyed the low gearing and suited my riding style (spin to win) Given my inexperience in these events it was really valuable to help preserve the knees and Achilles.
I need a tip for how to keep water for long endurance rides best way possible. If possible, attach bottles on fork in bikepacking style, timetrial double bottle mount behind saddle or camel bag? I see a lot of riders wearing a camel but I thought it's good to get rid of the weight on your body and keep the weight on your bike as much possible?
SON for ****s sake! How long still does it take until battery lights finally go extinct? :) There are 15mm SON versions though, I have one in Boost standard even.
The exposure revo does have an output which you can connect to a rear light or use one of Exposure's boost USB cables - it just about keeps my Wahoo gps battery ticking over!
Bit of advise: Next time dress in a Bike radar shirt for the video and not a non ironed one, get a haircut and shave, looks more professional. Just like on the GCN channel. The video is great
Watch how Felix got on here, it's a BikeRadar Diaries classic! 👉 th-cam.com/video/xX67H7wYvSI/w-d-xo.html
What does everyone think to Felix's bike, and do you think he'll finish the brutal TransAtlantic Way? Let us know in the comments!
Felix looks like a fit lad! I bet he can do it in less than 10 days! Good luck!
Thanks! You can see if he makes it in less than 10 days here: trackleaders.com/transatlantic19i.php?name=Felix_Smith
2000km in 2 weeks is about 90 miles a day - I wouldn't have thought you'd need to do any night riding at that sort of pace?
The route has about 20000 metres of climbing (~60000 feet), so I would say you're still right. take a 20 kph pace (~13 mph), work 8 hours a day, and you're there. It might be that he wants to smash that estimate, under-promise and over-deliver. Who knows.
depends on the road ;)
One thing i can think of is, if it is very windy and you have days of headwind, riding at night were winds die down makes a big difference.
After a week, your legs are heavy and you can't get up as early as you did at the start. Your lunch breaks get longer and longer.
@@_Rafiki. With all the daylight hours available in the middle of summer? Really?
I like Felix :) Good luck and hope to see you more in front of the camera.
Thanks for watching, you'll be seeing plenty more of him in the future!

I’d have a backup battery powered light. Don’t love the wire connection from the dynamo to the lights.

Liking the bike set up, shame about the forks not fitting. Best of luck and have fun.

how did you fix the front light on the aerobars? What is the reference of the support please?
Best of luck!! Sounds like a doable trip although the 2wk timeline is quite the crunch.

Good luck, mate. Two weeks is a bit on the short side, but doable.
Thanks for watching!
All the best on the Wild Atlantic way
I've done some of it and it's beautiful. then I'm from Cork and biased. Enjoy.
ride safe Felix

YES MATE
What's the name of the handlebar mounted water bottle holder shown at the end (9:02)?
It is just inside the front bag.
Yes João is right, it is the apidura racing front pack. It has handy pockets on the sides. www.bikeradar.com/features/apiduras-racing-range-is-designed-for-audax-aficionados/
How is the light mounted on the aerobars?
Crafty bottle opener mounting!
Good Luck with the tires Felix. Didn't heard a lot of good things about them, especially on gravel.
They were great, although I should have got a new front tyre before the event as it got damaged and the tubeless failed on the 4th day in.
AKA 2 million meters. Absolute mad lad

I didn’t notice any suspension at all. Not even under the saddle or handlebar stem. How do you manage? 😳
I thought that because of the Lauf title i was going to see those crazy springs at the front 😬
? He's not an oaf from Texas who needs a Harley Davidson to go six miles down the road. He's a cyclist: Suspension is in his knees and elbows.
When it's mostly on roads or fine gravel, the tires might already provide enough suspension.
Thats gonna be awesome !!!

i think this may be my next cycle tour.. not in 2 wks though 😅

I can confirm it would be fantastic to cycle tour!
Are we getting an update video on the event with Felix?
Absolutely. It's in the pipeline!
Exposure Revo!
Why not use the Exposure dynamo hub as well.
You have a Son Edelux dynamo..

what is the name of TT Bar extension ? ,
thanks
What's the route? Will try to say hello if you're passing by.

Why not 2x? With 46,30 rings and a 11-34 cassette, you'd have a bigger big gear and a smaller small gear.
nickyboyZH because, dad, 2x is laaaame!
(Half of my bikes are 2x.)

Nice setup! Which crankset are you using?
Ah, is it the S350? How do you like it?
@@tanglewoodtree yes, the crank has held up well. It's not the lightest but it does the job without any problems so far!
I would love to take part in such a race some day. Any tips on preparing for longer rides?
Would be cool if the dynamo was capable enough to slooowly recharge a phone and a gopro for example, 15w should be enough hehe.
Any modern dynamo can do that. With the help of a modern USB dynamo adapter. But it provides 5-8 W only.
The exposure revo does have an output which you can connect to a rear light or use one of Exposure's boost USB cables - it just about keeps my Wahoo gps battery ticking over!
Aye! Felix over here lol
No dangle-mug? Simon Richardson is disappointed in you, haha good luck though!
I like your setup and sadly, idiot award goes to me because I ride my 25mm tyres even through snow and ice in Winter!
2000 in 2 weeks .. i can finish my daily 142 km the morning lol
Why putting stupid aero handles on a bike like that? Not only does it look incredible handicaped but also increases the weight even further.
One by is a stupid choice for this ride, but it is fashionable.
👍👍💘💘🍦🍦😘
put a 53t on it or don't post it

To maximize the professional look he should also wear a tuxedo, black leather shoes and put a shitload of hairwax on
Nobody asked for this, nobody wants this. Bikepacking sucks.
