You can buy and use the Sony Vaio Duo 11 pen. But make sure that the Taichi model being sold in your country has the N-Trig digitizer. I'd hate to think thing Asus makes one without the digitizer but if there's no pen included, that would hint that it might be a touch-only version.
Modern tablets have palm rejection, as does the Asus. I was simply trying to not muck up the screen too much so it would stay clear and clean looking for the video. I also try to not block the screen too much when drawing (not easy being left handed). Palm rejection works fine on the Asus, Sony Vaio Duo and Samsung ATIV tablets among others.
Looking through the comments and Lisa interacting with her viewers :-) love! Another reason I keep coming back plus the unbias reviews... Loving u in Kingston, Jamaica
Our Taichi came from the store, it wasn't supplied by Asus. The touch screen worked fine on ours. I have noted quality issues with their Android tablets, mostly the TF700 which was a problem child.
There's actually a setting in Windows 8 to suppress the on-screen keyboard. maybe someone turned that feature on. Most of the time, my Duo 11 does pop up the keyboard in tablet mode. Sometimes it forgets... seems to be a Win8 issue. Same is true for Taichi.
We'll probably skip the TF810. I had one but the driver issues caused too many problems (some of this is fixed now) and I think it's priced nearly out of the market at $1,000 for tablet + keyboard. That's a lot for an Intel Atom system. What do you guys and gals think?
Docking connector for what? Since the keyboard is permanently attached and docking stations have largely gone away I can't imagine what for. At any rate, it does not have a docking connector.
All modern Windows machines with dual digitizers (pen + touch) have palm rejection so your hand won't trigger events on screen when you're using the pen.
Hi Lisa. Please remember to go to the "Change PC Settings" metro settings menu and uncheck the auto brightness settings when reviewing Windows 8 devices with auto brightness capabilities. If not, it will lock the max brightness so that it can't even go half its full brightness.
For $1500, you're looking at pretty much the same price, right? It really depends on whether you want to use the device as a reasonably light tablet sometimes or if you'll always use it with the keyboard. The ATIV 700T shouldn't get all that hot, just warm. The older Samsung S7 slate got toastier.
Thank you so much for your review. I could not decide which laptop to take to college with me and have been researching several different types, including the Dell and Asus. I have been told by Best Buy and other electronic store workers that the Asus is the better option, and this review has helped concrete my belief that this is true. Again, thank you very much!
Just picked up a Taichi a few hours ago. It is the i5 model with 128gb SSD and it did not come with the N-Trig digitizer. I suspect that is only included with the i7 version around where I live at least. The digitizer is a $59 option sadly (only found one site that sells it, at least here in Australia).
Great review. Like the gentle but practical sense of humor, eg: " One of the toastier ones...." I'll be keeping tabs on your reviews. You speak a' my language :)
Any N-Trig (preferably DuoSense 2, the latest model) will work with this. I don't know if Asus is selling spares yet. The pen is interchangeable with the Sony Vaio Duo 11 pen.
Lisa, would you recommend the taichi over the Vaio Duo 11? I was going to go with the Duo 11 until I saw the taichi and I've been waiting for it to be released. Now I'm waiting for the 13.3" model since it has better battery life and bigger screen size. I don't think the 13" model is that much heavier than the the 11" either...Anyways, thank you for the excellent review. The best I've seen so far.
Yes portability and efficientcy is important. Especially when you have prospects and you need to present to a crowd of people. Thank you for the review.
The pen thing can be confusing. Here in the US, the Core i7 version of the Taichi comes with the N-Trig digitizer and digital pen, but I believe the Core i5 version does not. The laptop doesn't have a pen silo, so you have to keep track of it yourself (not fun).
Interesting on the movie on back screen and normal activity on front screen. I wonder if you can just add some mirrors so you can have the back screen reflect back at you, so it seems like you'll have two monitors.
Hi Lisa, now that you have reviewed Taichi... can you tell which among all the tablets that you have reviewed so far has both a digital pen and Intel wireless display? I'm a chemistry teacher and I would like have both options on my tablet... Thanks!!!
Lisa, that was a great and useful review! I actually just bought the Taichi 31, i5 (hard to find the i7 to purchase at a less than $2k price diff). Thanks again! GREAT job!
Hi Lisa, awesome review as always, but I am a little worried about the battery life on this device, is the 13 inch model going to have a better battery life than the 11 inc model? I would really like to see a review of the 13 inch one since it has a not so common form factor in the world of windows 8 convertible pcs.
I'm almost ready to buy this. Thank you for the review. Can you easily flip the whole thing forward from laptop mode so the touch screen/digitizer is set up like an easel in front of you? Thanks!
I've always loved your reviews. But one thing that I think you could improve is to put an ND filter on your camera. That would help a lot since your room is pretty bright.
the bezel seems very big... as in the black parts around the back screen or internal too...do you think so too Lisa? I am unable to actually play with this laptop, as i am in australia.
Hey Lisa, i´m searching for the N-Trig Duosence seperately to the Taichi, cause the i5-Models are sold without the Asus Taichi Stylus by N-Trig and the i7-Model isn´t launched yet. Do you know where to buy it? Shipping to Germany would be fine ;) Thanks, Alex!
does the touch feature on the tablet mode get disabled when you use the pen?? seeing as you can do CG art on this, I wanna know if your hand reacts to the touchscreen when you use the pen...
Personal feeling: the ATIV 700t is way too plasticky for a $1,200 computer. It looks cheesy. But the internals are pretty good and the Wacom digitizer is a pleasure. The screen isn't my favorite, but I do prefer IPS. I actually like the look and feel of my last gen Samsung Series 7 Slate better, but it lacks the handy keyboard dock.
Do you have any recommendations for a laptop/tablet to take in the field for photographers? Display accuracy, brightness Speed and ability to process in lightroom and photoshop. Battery life and weight are my main criteria. I appreciate your time and your videos, they are very informative and helpful. Thanks again
Lisa, i saw the Duo 11 yesterday, and when i used it on the tablet mode, the screen keyboard doesnt pop up whenever i wanna write something. That happens because the windows doesnt know if the Sony duo 11 is in tablet or laptop mode. Does that happens with the Taichi also ? Thanks !
The Duo 11 rear camera is decent but not nearly as good as higher end smartphone cameras. Honestly, the 5MP on the Taichi isn't great for 5MP, and I suspect it needs a better camera driver and software. I personally prefer the Vaio Duo 11 because I don't need two screens and like being able to use it in tablet mode for drawing and note taking. But the Asus' keyboard is much better.
Hello Lisa, Thank you so much for an excellent tutorial and review. I purchased Asus Taichi 21 recently. It's quite an amazing pc. I basically have problem with the webcam. When using skype it's perfect, but on Google hangout it's a bit tricky. I tried all I could, but doesn't show the facing camera, which means instead of seeing my face I always see the other site. When I go to the camera setting to change, yes it does, but when I start google hangout it flipped back! Plz, what's the problem?
Does a pen come with the laptop in the original purchase, or do I have to decide which one to get? If it doesn't come with one, what would you recommend for someone who takes notes on the screen? If it does come with one, how do you keep from losing it?
one of the issues im having is that while in tablet mode, i normally scroll down using the finger. however, the screen goes to the option where your finger acts as your mouse highlighting things, instead of finger scrolling. is there some update to fix this issue?
I wish you had gone to the ces..would have been cool.. Planninin on buying that new chronos..some say it might be out in feb..will belooking forward to your review
What function does the solid state drive do and is out something a consumer like me should heavily consider for optimal performance? Thanks for your intended reply.
Hi Lisa, after upgrading to Windows 8.1, the external screen won´t work. Any tips? i run closelid 1:18, ¨VGA ....1034,BIOS 210. Get what I mean? thanks
Hi Lisa... i was reading somewhere that the software used by Asus for the two screens display is an work-around which uses Windows extended display functionality, so Asus lacks proper software to use them as back to back screens..is it true? In short..are you happy with Asus drivers and software for back-to back screen functionality? Dont want to risk buying it again..( after having returned once)..unless you back it with your definite ans and reasoning.. thanks much!
Hi Lisa, Great review. A question- I bought the Asus Taichi, and mine touch screen simply wouldn't perform the touch.. i am 10+ yrs pro laptop user, tried the dual screen , mirror, tablet mode...all with same results.- display was okay, but touch wudnt work.. Now, i have had 3 Asus Transformer Eee Pads..(bought for gifting).. and ALL had BIG problems...it seems like Asus quality is turning horrible. Have u guys faced this with Asus quality ? Do u guys get special well tested units?
Hi Lisa I love all your reviews. I need some advice from you. Next month I am planning on buying a Ultrabook or Tablet or any hybrid tablet. I am keen on buying an Asus product but confused a little. There are many awesome Asus products and I cant decide on which one to buy. My budget is 800-1000 USD and most probably I will go for an Android ecosystem. What is your suggestion for me? plz help
If you want to know which is better just go to the manufacture website and compare the specs, processor speed, ram, video memory, cache, and Hard drive space. Better is dependant on what you will use it for, how large you want it and if you need a digitizer pen. We won't know the over all quality of the cases until people start to use heavily. Buying a new model PC should last 5-10 years before NEEDing to upgrade.
I have a question and need it answered very quickly. My birthday is coming up and thinking of getting a good laptop which is fast, and good with gaming. I've been thinking of either getting Asus Vivobook or Asus Taichi. I want something portable and can easliy sit on my lap with no problem while still being comfortable. Which do you recommend? I need something worth keeping through college. Please keep in mind of the battery life and camera quality
lisa gade.can you suggest me a good multitouch tablet with full sized keyboard.it should have full sized hdmi port.micro sd/sd card,.usb 3.0 port, digital pressure sensitive pen.3g sim card slot and stylish design.
I wonder if when in independent screen use, if the touch screen works for say youtube ? could someone across from you, control their own screen like that?
Hey MobiletechReview X) i have a question.....should i get the Dell XP12 intel core i7 ultra book or the ASUS TACHI i7 intel core when it comes to gaming ?? thanks X)
This one looks really good; the battery life is a real frustration though. It has the full Windows OS function, but even with that it is hard to compete with my Asus Transformer with it's 12 hours of battery life (docked). There's something to be said for being able to go a whole day without needing an electric outlet.
The Taichi and Sony Vaio Duo 11 have both a digital pen and WiDi. The Samsung ATIV 700 might, but we don't have it in for review yet.
You can buy and use the Sony Vaio Duo 11 pen. But make sure that the Taichi model being sold in your country has the N-Trig digitizer. I'd hate to think thing Asus makes one without the digitizer but if there's no pen included, that would hint that it might be a touch-only version.

Yes we'll review the Surface Pro, probably right around the release date.
I'm quite happy with the way the Taichi handles the screen. Mirror mode, presentation mode and extended monitor: it all works well.
Looking through the comments and Lisa interacting with her viewers :-) love! Another reason I keep coming back plus the unbias reviews... Loving u in Kingston, Jamaica
Auto-brightness was turned off before shooting this video. In fact, I always turn it off just for general use because it's too darned dim.
You should be able to since the Intel HD 4000 supports using two external displays and internal panel at the same time.
Our Taichi came from the store, it wasn't supplied by Asus. The touch screen worked fine on ours. I have noted quality issues with their Android tablets, mostly the TF700 which was a problem child.
You're looking at the same Core i7 and Intel HD 4000 graphics and both have a 1080p display. Really the same for gaming capabilities.
Tough choice. Dell XPS 12 if you type lots and Taichi if you prefer something lighter and the digital pen feature.
We'll probably skip the TF810. I had one but the driver issues caused too many problems (some of this is fixed now) and I think it's priced nearly out of the market at $1,000 for tablet + keyboard. That's a lot for an Intel Atom system. What do you guys and gals think?

Acer Aspire S7 11 or 13": which would you rather see us review?
All modern Windows machines with dual digitizers (pen + touch) have palm rejection so your hand won't trigger events on screen when you're using the pen.
my favorite tech review channel on youtube :) thank you Lisa
The bezel is a pretty decent size, but this isn't uncommon for tablets (provides strength and a place to route wireless antennas).
Those are all full Windows 8. If you get the optional battery slice for the Duo 11 there's a silo for the pen.
Hi Lisa.
Please remember to go to the "Change PC Settings" metro settings menu and uncheck the auto brightness settings when reviewing Windows 8 devices with auto brightness capabilities.
If not, it will lock the max brightness so that it can't even go half its full brightness.

Matte touch screens have sadly pretty much disappeared. Fujitsu might still make one among their many business models.
Just picked up a Taichi a few hours ago. It is the i5 model with 128gb SSD and it did not come with the N-Trig digitizer. I suspect that is only included with the i7 version around where I live at least. The digitizer is a $59 option sadly (only found one site that sells it, at least here in Australia).
type orientation in the search box using tablet mode. Its under settings, change orientation, and check auto-rotate
Great review. Like the gentle but practical sense of humor, eg: " One of the toastier ones...." I'll be keeping tabs on your reviews. You speak a' my language :)

I did go to CES and we have some videos covering products from the show. The new Samsung Chronos is sweet looking in person.
Yes portability and efficientcy is important. Especially when you have prospects and you need to present to a crowd of people. Thank you for the review.

This is awesome! Love your reviews! Hope to buy the next gen of this model or the 31 model. How is the battery life?
Would love it if you could review the new taichi 31 that ASUS says was launched today! Really hoping the battery life improved
I've always loved your reviews. But one thing that I think you could improve is to put an ND filter on your camera. That would help a lot since your room is pretty bright.

It's an N-Trig DuoSense 2 stylus, rebranded by Asus. The stylus and tech are pretty new.
does the touch feature on the tablet mode get disabled when you use the pen?? seeing as you can do CG art on this, I wanna know if your hand reacts to the touchscreen when you use the pen...
Lisa, I see on asus.com that the taichi 21 has LESS keys then the taichi 31... Yet pics show they both have the same amount of keys. Can you explain?
Hey Lisa, when do you think we will see the 13.3inch model in stores, or even availability?
Great review, like always, thanks for your time :)
Is there any new news about the 31 model and it's release date? Great review by the way! I can't wait for the better battery of the 31

Hey Lisa, I was wondering if the Asus Taichi has pinch to zoom on the tablet side of the screen?
Hi Lisa, I cannot find the auto-rotate button for this Taichi in the tablet mode. do you know where it is?

I use a MacBook Pro Retina 15" as my main work machine with external Thunderbolt monitor as a desktop, and the Sony Vaio Duo 11 for my laptop.
Thanks !

They call it anti-glare but it's not really matte. Just not wildly glossy.
Doesn't the Lenovo X1 Carbon with Touch come with a matte screen? At least anti-glare.

Can the pen be bought separately? And if so, does it work with other touch pads? Thanks!!
Who is the manufacturer of Taichi stylus? What about stylus sensitivity?

Lisa, Can you confirm if either the 21 or 31 has 1 x Docking Connector
You mean Ethernet? It comes with a USB to Ethernet adapter in the box.
0:30 "Automagically" though
Hey, do you know if the Asus Transformer Book will have a Digitizer stylus?
lisa gade.can you suggest me a good multitouch tablet with full sized keyboard.it should have full sized hdmi port.micro sd/sd card,.usb 3.0 port, digital pressure sensitive pen.3g sim card slot and stylish design.

Does asus taichi have a place for the DVD?
dear Lisa ... why don't you consider reviewing the awesome Razer Blade ultrabook
or any gaming laptop :)
Hey MobiletechReview X) i have a question.....should i get the Dell XP12 intel core i7 ultra book or the ASUS TACHI i7 intel core when it comes to gaming ?? thanks X)
@Johnpaul Mathew surface pro? it comes out the 26 of this month
It comes with a pen that can be used on the outer screen.
This is really a very good review! This laptop is so good!
I bought one already and it's really worth of it. My boss also want to buy one.
Can you upgrade the hard drive on this laptop? I have the 128GB but want to know if i can upgrade it to a bigger size.
Amazing review as always!
what do you think the best price and performance ratio for a windows 8 pro laptop?
Will you be reviewing the Toshiba U925t?
In the asus tachi 21 can you choose the intel core i7 with 128ssd?
Lisa, does the asus transformer Book come with a stylus / digitizer?
Is it powerful enough to do 3D modelling.. maybe with 3D Max or others?
Why don't you just install Windows 7 on your Mac?
Can you review the Asus Taichi installing Windows 10?
This one looks really good; the battery life is a real frustration though. It has the full Windows OS function, but even with that it is hard to compete with my Asus Transformer with it's 12 hours of battery life (docked). There's something to be said for being able to go a whole day without needing an electric outlet.
Can the SSD be upgraded to a larger storage size?
It's a proprietary SSD that Asus uses in all their Ultrabooks, so you won't find aftermarket SSDs that fit.
The RAM is soldered to the board yes?
Random question: If I use a pen while putting my palm on the screen, will that affect it?
