    What's the point of DOGE if there is no debt limit?

    • @mirokresonja8383
      @mirokresonja8383 9 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      If it was in good faith, the point would be to reduce the deficit to zero (or get a slight surplus, to slowly start bringing the entire debt down). Then we wouldn't need to have any debt limit discussions; it could be infinite at that point, but we'd be getting away from it.
      Of course, this is all in theory. We know the Republicans will run massive deficits and brag about the economy.

    The way i see it, debt ceiling is kind of a check and balance. Whenever funding legislature is being proposed, the ruling side have to worry about not hitting the debt ceiling on every decision.
    If there's no debt ceiling, they don't have to worry about spending and would include every congressman's amendment requests and add to their bill just to get their vote to pass the bill.
    Sure, it's being abused by the Congress but, not having this check at all seems more dangerous and that can be exploited worse than now.

      Only people who don't understand inflation can take that promise seriously. After a period of 10% inflation, for the prices get back to their previous values, you'd need -11% inflation. That would wreck any economy.
      The best you can hope is for prices to rise another 1% every year and that will be hard enough to achieve. For one, raising the debt ceiling is the first step for most inflationary measures...

    At 7:55, they ARE related. If you were to cut the expenditures of the budget and/or raise revenues to such a degree that you eliminated the deficit and turned it into a surplus then it is true that you wouldn't need to raise the debt ceiling. It is not a forgone conclusion that we must increase our debt with each passing year. That's just the way we've operated this entire century thanks to George W. Bush and his successors, including Trump.

    I've said it numerous times and it's worth repeating here because the debt is being discussed again. It's not the social programs causing the debt. It's the stuff the social programs are paying for. Who owns this stuff? Why are they charging so much we are going into debt as individuals and a country to buy access to this stuff? The solution is a wealth tax on anyone with assets totaling over $10 million whether or not they sell the asset. This will reduce the price of those assets, reduce inflation, and more importantly get our debt under control.

    Government debt can be a useful tool when managed properly. It allows countries to invest in infrastructure, education, and technology, fostering long-term economic growth. Borrowing helps cover budget deficits without raising taxes or cutting essential services, which can be especially important during economic downturns.
    Critics who oppose government debt often overlook its potential benefits. Rather than harming a country, responsible borrowing can lead to greater productivity and future prosperity. The key is managing debt sustainably-excessive debt is problematic, but moderate borrowing for growth is a smart economic strategy, not a financial burden.

    Obviously, the US government can always pay its debts, since they are denominated in dollars. When people and corporations lend money to the government, they are basically just storing away money they don't need to spend now. When they do that, they of course also signal a belief that the dollar will maintain its value in the future; nobody would want to be paid back in a currency that lost value.

    There's too many people who don't understand that "debt ceiling" isn't about borrowing more money... It's about paying back the money that's been borrowed. In that way, the Republicans have successfully lied to people about their messaging.
    If you lower the debt ceiling then, like skipping paying back the credit card debt for that month, you've decided not to pay back what you owe. That's not the same a borrowing more money, as in asking the bank to increase your credit card limit from 5k to 10k.
