Job is a man in the Bible. He was tested by God to show his faith. His wife told him to turn away from God and accept that God had left him. Jobs wife is basically a catch all for being a bad wife. Not supporting your husband. Being a shrew and bad tempered with your husband.
I can say that this movie ACTUALLY made me scared. It doesn't have the typical corny jumpscares that most modern day "horror" films have. But rather, this movie is more so of a physiological horror. Everything from the film's score (music soundtrack), from the eerie, grey, dull, harsh atmosphere of the film's setting. Seeing the conditions in which they are living in and how harsh life is for them on top of their inevitable demise, is what I found to be things that stand out to me in this film that make it a TRUE horror movie. If anyone hasn't watched this movie yet, you're missing out! It's a movie well worth your time, trust me.

I've always noticed that every young girl, or at least almost every young girl, develops an interest in witchcraft at some point. Even if it's the sparkly Disney version, most young girls want to be magic. They want to mix potions and crush insects and sacrifice lizards (i worked at a preschool, it got weird y'all) and cast spells. Idk why this is but my opinion is that when you're little and everyone tells u the typical "girls should be clean/quiet/well behaved/dress like this etc." and then u see a witch, a woman capable of turning anyone who tells her that into a frog, that just looks hella attractive
Witchcraft is actually the worship of Nature. Praying in church on Sunday is the same exact thing as casting a spell in a coven, just different names for the practice. Hollywood's depiction of witches only shows the EXTREME spectrum of witches back then. We all practice magick! ✨
Its probably because wielding magic is badass. Like what would you rather have? Using spells to do whatever you want, or having to do everything by hand and be bored?
You've identified some of the dialectic. Funny how many rabbis priests immams etc basically dress alike witches with black or grey dresses lol. Heirachical systems always produce a huge mess of convoluted human relationships around good and evil which more often than not are just semiotics for power. Trying to sort all this out can get even more crazy lol and these movies explore the dangers of teleological thinking. Ironically technology is going to send us back into the dark ages as we expect everything to be semi aware like Alexa lol

Love needs to be given unconditionally. This movie shows (albeit to an extreme and unrealistic level) how being puritanical can push others to evil. Do not falter yourself, but offer a hand. Do not turn to evil deeds yourself, but never turn from others so long as help is possible. Strange that such a movie can have any message what-so-ever, stranger still that it is a Christian one.
To be honest this wasn't a really in depth explanation. It didn't delve deep enough in the smaller components that viewers witness as the movie progresses. For example, the hare that we see repeatedly throughout the movie, is it a familiar? Or when Caleb discovered the witch in the wood, what did she actually do to him to cause him to die, did she feed on his soul or something? Also the scene where the mother sees the illusions of Caleb and her baby, Caleb asks if she would read him a book, was that just a random question or was it the book of souls, because her behavior completely changed the next morning. I need answers this movie was awesome af, but I need more information.
The rabbit was a lure by the witch because they were hungry. She turned into a deity just like (vampires turn into bats or rats). So they'd follow it. When it appeared in the barn it was bloody because the white goat was suckled by the witch and that is why the goats blood came out of the teat after that. The woman at the green door was probably the old hag after drinking/bathing in the baby's blood, and she probably made him come to her even tho he was fighting it. Then they did some ritual like poison apple, and ritual and get him to go home and spread the bad vibes to the rest. The mother was a bit off after all her sagas and was mesmerized by the return of the silver cup and seeing the baby, ( which was orchestrated as the power of this entity got stronger with each kill) so the book just added the things together. All in all, the father lost all his respect and power after leading the family away from the group. He lost his dignity and the wife and kids were preying upon him. When he realized he could do nothing to make them happy, he gave up. His mistake of course was teaching them all to embrace sin and not being humble enough to deserve Christ's blessing. That was the frosting on the cake. But that was how many thought back then, and some still do now.
It’s not tho. It was given great praise at its release. The viewers started shitting on it, when they realized it wasn’t another garbage jump scare film
Pugilist Enthusiast exactly. Critics are the ones who can accurately rate a movie. Because it’s their profession too. The audience score means nothing too me. Most people aren’t bright enough to understand movies like The Witch.

LDS German shepherd boy you understand real Christians utterly despise that LDS shit right? Don’t worry though, you’re all equally pathetic in the eyes of the sane.
@@Sean-no3zv oh just stop.... I could arguably say the same for you😒 However, I do testify that I do believe in Christ! He is my Lord, and Savior. I testify that he has performed the Atonment for all of God's Children, and that he has saved me from an endless pit of woe! "O blessed Jesus, who has saved me from an awful hell! O blessed God, have mercy on this people!" (Betcha can't find that one since you think it's from a crazy book) "11 And he shall go forth, suffering pains and afflictions and temptations of every kind; and this that the word might be fulfilled which saith he will take upon him the pains and the sicknesses of his people. 12 And he will take upon him death, that he may loose the bands of death which bind his people; and he will take upon him their infirmities, that his bowels may be filled with mercy, according to the flesh, that he may know according to the flesh how to succor his people according to their infirmities. 13 Now the Spirit knoweth all things; nevertheless the Son of God suffereth according to the flesh that he might take upon him the sins of his people, that he might blot out their transgressions according to the power of his deliverance; and now behold, this is the testimony which is in me." And that same testimony of Jesus Christ (mentioned in a book you call Crazy but that I call an inspired work of God and another Testament to our Lord and Saviour) is my same testimony! Christ is my Lord and Saviour, and I will never try to abandon him!
Yeah, attaining women's lib by murdering infants and eschewing conviction or morality in return for cheap goods and thrills. How will her end come? Alone and unloved, being eaten by her cats that she kept to replace the child she murdered in her foolish youth. Very apt that in this film women's liberation is paired with satanism.
6:15....... I always thought it was the same witch from earlier but she grew young because she ate the baby...... I think I remember being told witches stay young by eating babies.... maybe that’s just my sick imagination lol
Wiccans are generally white witches/warlocks. The ones in the film are black witches. Same religion applied to different ends. Like missionaries vs conquistadors. ;)
That is why I don't hate them. I disagree on their views and will gladly welcome them if they turn Christian, but I cannot hate them, especially as I know baby eating black wiccans are for the most part fictional. Most I meant are decent people, even if a bit pessimistic, but than who am I to judge on pessimism.
I remember me mum telling me stories about witches back in Mexico how they would hunt new born babies and try to swipe them away to eat em. So I'm glad they brought that up as well as the witches flying. she would also tell me they would glow red flying above the mountains and hills away from the town she grew up in. So it's surprising to see how the tales of witches in New England are similar to the tale of witches all the way down in Mexico, quite fascinating
I remember watching this I'm theaters and being torn. Kind of hating the movie. After watching it again when it released on blu-ray, I ended up loving the film. I don't what it was, maybe my own expectations for what I thought the film would be first watching it was my problem.
My favorite theory is that one day the villagers found the house with the whole family dead or missing, and this film is the villagers explanation for what happened. In their puritanical paranoia, they blamed the girl for being a witch and bringing doom on the family. This film is set one generation before the Salem witch trials.

I've watched this film at least 20 times & at no point does Katherine tell her husband that Samuel was the product of adultery. Her 'confession' to her husband is the dream she had as a teenager where she felt an almost sensual love for Christ that she knew she could never have for a husband and that since Samuel's disappearance she'd lost her faith & become (in her words) "a shrew." Nothing is said about Samuel's parentage. Unless I've missed something - I'll watch it again if you'd care to tell me the scene you refer to.

@Gromph Baenre naw, the baby was definitely Kathrine and Williams. There's a good amount of dialog talking about it. Off the top of my head I'm pretty certain the dad refers to Sam(the baby) as Calebs brother, and the mother says something about Thomasin losing her brother. and when William is trying to console Kathrine he saying something about how even though they lost Sam they were still blessed to have 4 children without any problems.

Never been a fan of horror films however the creatures that they make up havr always interested me. Haven't been subscribed long though I look forward to continuously watching your work.
You've given a very literal interpretation of the film (which may very well be the correct one), but I sort of took it to imply that the events and motivations were ambiguous, at best, and open to interpretation. Some of the scenes, as you said, showed the characters misinterpreting or deliberately deceiving each other and seemed to imply that the supernatural elements may have been the result of paranoia and hallucination. The atmosphere created by a combination of zealotry and living on the border between the most remote outpost of Christendom and a dark, primordial forest populated by 'heathens', acts as a crucible for the type of collective madness that leads to historical tragedies like the Salem Witch-trials. Colonial New England is like a physical manifestation of the divide between God and Satan, good and evil, the known and unknown, the secure past and the threatening future, and the precarious position one is in when they skirt that boundary. Also, William mentions the 'blight' that's killing their corn, and one of the interpretations for the mass hysteria around the witch trials of New England is the effects of ergot poisoning; a fungus containing an alkaloid related to LSD that infects cereal grain crops. It can cause hallucinations, obviously, as well as seizures and glossolalia.
Hey Ni’at (hope I spelled that right), I really love your videos and how much research you put into them. One criticism, if you can call it that, is that the audio of the movie clips/scenes isn’t loud enough and I find myself struggling to hear them. Honestly this horror movie is so unique. It’s hard to find movies or shows this realistic and good and related to the time period it’s based in. It’s also super disturbing yet mysterious. I love it. Watching the witch makes me feel as though I’m actually on set experiencing what’s happening. I had so many mixed emotions and opinions of every scene. The bunny that transforms into a witch is such a realistic perspective on witches, too. This is by far my favorite horror movie, 10/10 👌🏻 💯
The VVitch ties with John Carpenter's The Thing as my favorite horror film of all time. It's an absolute masterpiece from start to finish and one that I derive something new out of with each viewing. Speaking of The Thing I've said before that the two films are actually quite similar despite their settings. Both feature a small ensemble cast; both movies take place in a secluded area pretty much cut off from the rest of the world; both movies deal very strongly with the subjects of distrust and paranoia; finally both films deal with an enemy that is relatively unseen in it's true form throughout the movie. I'm loving this channel. Keep up the good work.
I love they way you put this video together and enjoyed hearing your insight, but I struggled with the audio volume. The director's interview and movie audio were whispers compared to your commentary.
Read somewhere about the possibility of everyone in that family just imagining things due to ergot consumption, which is shown in the failing crops scene, they were probably desperate for food and got intoxicated with it

Super old comment but I like to think the paranormal activity franchise and conjuring franchise does, too. Very similar concepts. It’s also my head canon that the Blair witch is, in fact, Thomasin and the town is near where they settled in the 1600s.
@@chrishealton3830 The timing of your comment is uncanny! I was speaking about this very subject just last night at work! It's pretty cool that we had a similar idea! 🙂 Just for fun, here are the ideas I had. This film is amazing I love that it shows what puritans thought of witches While most witches are pagan or neutral on faith im sure some are satanic but the puritans and Christians and Catholics(no offense to anyone) really were radical violent people who were paranoid and killed those of different faiths and beliefs.. Some are still like that but besides that the film really shows the horrific side of like you said religious oppression and depicted horrific witches and ect. And yeah I love this film!
the film's major flaw was it showed you immediately that the witch(s) presence was real. The film would have been more suspenseful if they kept it ambiguous whether or not they were victims of a witch. If you think back about the film and take out all the scenes showing the witch(s) it would have been a lot more spookier.
Actually that's not true, it's never made clear the witches are real. All of the supernatural events could have occurred in their minds as a result of the mold that killed their crops, which happened in real life. If anything, it's the most likely thing that happened. Their religious paranoia coupled with actual madness
@@17thknight What about that scene that's like 30mins in that shows the witch about to kill the baby in the hut in the woods? And then shows her rubbing whatever on herself? No one in the family was there for that so how could it have been any kind of hallucination brought on by the crops if it wasnt seen by any of them?

I'm not surprised at all. A Childs imagination is an amazing thing, regardless of gender. Them being INCREDIBLY impressionable adds to that situation.
Its probably because wielding magic is badass. Like what would you rather have? Using spells to do whatever you want, or having to do everything by hand and be bored?
Zone Doll sounds like you’re projecting. every girl doesn’t do that, it’s entirely based on what you’re exposed to.
In an age of really shitty horrors and thrillers this movie gave me legit chills to the bones.Too bad it's highly under rated.

Kali Yuga Thank You! 😃

Yeah, attaining women's lib by murdering infants and eschewing conviction or morality in return for cheap goods and thrills. How will her end come? Chippewa Guy maybe in books, but i've met a few wicca, they're very nice people!
This was my understanding of that scene too
When exactly did the wife admit infidelity???
david hewitt She didn’t have an affair. She confesses to not feeling close to god as she did before losing Sam.
She had hit her husband and makes the remark she has become a shrew, like Job’s wife.

I had dreamed once - twas when I was of Thomasin’s years - that I was with Christ upon earth. I was so very near him and in many tears for the assurance of the pardon of my sins and was so ravished with his love towards me, I thought it far exceeding the affection of the kindest husband. The impression of it was so deep in my heart, when I waked, my pillow had turned to tears.

And, since Samuel disappeared, I
have such a sad weakness of faith that I cannot shake it. I cannot see Christ’s help as near. I pray and pray but I cannot . . . I fear I cannot ever feel that same measure of love again.
WILLIAM (curt)

@Gromph Baenre naw, the baby was definitely Kathrine and Williams. There's a good amount of dialog talking about it. Off the top of my head I'm pretty certain the dad refers to Sam(the baby) as Calebs brother, and the mother says something about Thomasin losing her brother. and when William is trying to console Kathrine he saying something about how even though they lost Sam they were still blessed to have 4 children without any problems.

I appreciate good, slow-burn horror as much as the next guy. That said, I don’t really think this is horror so much as it is a dark drama.

One criticism, if you can call it that, is that the audio of the movie clips/scenes isn’t loud enough and I find myself struggling to hear them.

While most witches are pagan or neutral on faith im sure some are satanic but the puritans and Christians and Catholics(no offense to anyone) really were radical violent people who were paranoid and killed those of different faiths and beliefs.. Robert Eggers is a rising cinematic genius. I mean he's made two horror movies and they're both 2 of the best ever!
the film's major flaw was it showed you immediately that the witch(s) presence was real.
