At its launch, the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV left a lot of people not just upset but truly angry. Is there anger founded or is it simply a case of "spec sheet" shock. That's what the "Real World Review" is here to find out: is this camera something to bitch about, praise, or shrug your shoulders?
The Canon 5D Mark IV is the latest iteration of the extremely popular and successful 5D lineup. The Canon 5D Mark III which came out four years ago is considered to be one of the best cameras of all time. It's quality for photos and video still hold up today which has left many people wondering is the upgrade to the Mark IV really worth it? In this Real World Review I take a look at all the angles to give you my honest opinion and feedback.

I find this type of video very interesting, we can see the photographer doing his job in his specific workflow, and telling us what he thinks about the camera and other equipment he is using.
For those who criticize what Jared is saying in this video, remember a few things :
1 - The camera is used the way Jared (and his crew) uses cameras, not the way everybody uses cameras (for photo and video)
2 - The review addresses pros and cons that matters specifically for the way Jared uses cameras, not necessarily everybody's way
3 - The review presents photos and videos samples, plus Jared share them freely if necessary, which is an objective way of making an opinion (edit: on what the camera is capable of delivering, not what experience it is to capture with)
So what to conclude ?
Always remember that people making review of gear are doing so with their own point of view. It's not necessarily a bad thing, but it's something to remember when you're making your opinion on someone making an opinion about gear. You then have to think about the way you'll use the gear : is it the same way the reviewer does, or is it a different way ? Then you can think about the pros and cons listed by the reviewer : will they affect me the same way they affected the reviewer ?
I find this type of video 10x more constructive and informative compared to the videos of that guy making 10s of videos about the 5D Mark IV specs sheet and comments about people that have just read the specs sheet that are already complaining about how it will make Canon fall and the world collapse, taking the Universe with it. It is just pointless.
Look at someone using the camera, because you probably can't do it for the moment, and then ask yourselves the good questions (see above). Then try the camera and see if it works for you.
I must agree. You have a point. No sense in bashing Jared. He has his way of working, his workflow and his style in still photography and video and his skills. Everyone is different. Also a camera is only as good as how good it feels in your hands and not on the spec sheet.
Despite all that though, what concerns me is that the world is moving forward. Media creators are these days no longer just photographers. Video has had many leaps and bounds (thanks to Canon) and it has been added to the portfolio of many photographers and now we can move forward and be hybrid media creators and not stagnate in just taking stills (although as said, some people just take stills, which is fine). However the majority are moving forward and becoming hybrid media creators.
For us photographers to give life and a visual story to our photography we use video to demonstrate and inspire. Video has become very important as a medium and its only going to get better.
I only hope that Canon taking 4 yrs to innovate have more up their sleeve because the 5D Mark IV as good as it is in stills, it is not as revolutionary as when they released DSLR with video and changed the world! This time is almost a step up to just fall in line. I hope Canon has some surprises for photographers and videographers (and not just top of the line cinema line shooters).
I guess it is asking a lot, but it is 2016, right?
would the 5d IV be better for video over the 80d asside from 4k
randomrazr I have a 70D and a 5D Mk iv and much prefer the 5D - I do shoot in 4k with 11-24 f4 & 24-70 f2.8 and find it pretty damn good

Man! It's tough to put anything of value on TH-cam because of the haters! Jared - keep up the good work.
He did a great job. I think the haters hate the camera, not the video and the time he put into this. People (and even Canon) know they could have done better.
The people who are desperate to hate the camera's paper specs and to claim it is a joke have never shot a single frame with it.
They have no idea of the camera's performance on the job.
Jared's opinion is at least well informed by use.

Did Jared described all back button focus like its a unique feature?
If you set any camera to back button focus and out the focus mode in continuous, it makes the button function as continuous when you hold it down and single when you just tap it, it's what most professionals have been doing for years.
Not the same thing as actually being able to switch focus drives. BBF was a work around. This will give the user an actual quick switch. I've been wanting this feature for a while!

I mapped my AF-ON button to one shot/AI servo switch. If you've got the Mark IV set to one shot, the button has to be held down to switch and continually focus on AI Servo while you shoot.

On the 5D mk iii you can map the DoF Preview button to switch from single to continuous. I find it actually better because I can still use the BBF to trigger the focus while switching from single to continuous only when I need it via the DoF preview button. On the 5D mk iii, however, as far as I know it is not possible to choose different groups for the two modes. I'm curious to test it on the new mk iv.

Great video, I like how you included the music video shoot, with a very informative review of the 5d4
honestly, way too much hate for this camera. Well, really, every camera. It seems as though, as soon as someone has thrown down $3500 for a competing brand, every other camera is crap.
I've owned Nikon (d810 and d750), great photos, bad video. Sony (A7rii, A7sii, A6300), great video features, atrocious color. Panasonic (Gh4), great for the price, but lacking in a few areas like AF and very digital looking video.
Every camera has ups and downs, you just have to figure out what is important to you. For me, as a documentary film maker and event shooter, bring on that sweet sweet dual pixel af! I'll take some of the other short comings, but the AF and canon color are system sellers for me. For. Me.
It's like this in everything nowdays. Smartphones, cameras, computers, tvs... anything with more than one major brand and people go out of their ways to shit on the products they don't own to feel better about what they have bought.
It's really, really sad this rabid attitude.

Exactly, people are so incredibly insecure that they feel the need to bash every option they didn't choose.
I think the hate is from mostly wannabees - if you work and use the thing as a tool, you look at how can you make money with it - if it gives you an edge, then cool, if not, no big deal. We have been using the MKIII since it came out - paid for them many times over and we'll upgrade one of the worn down MKIIIs to the IV and get on down the road - we have too much Canon glass to get all cranky about little nits. :)

Thanks for the review Jared. I'd be interested in seeing how effective the dual pixel shift is with macro shots, it may be useful if shooting 1:1 or higher. I often shoot at 2:1 or 3:1.

Nice thorough review Jared. One question; You mentioned 1080p encodes at 4:2:2, but does shooting 1080p video have the 1.74 crop factor?
I realise shooting 4k does, but I've learned the hard way to never assume important details like this.
