WOW. I'd never heard of this ancestor until today while a relative was watching a film & I heard this from the bathroom. Amazing. Such a soulful & powerful voice! I can't believe I just missed him. RWTA.
Richie was in a class by himself. His voice is distinctive and I love his music. He makes an old song sound different just by the way he sings. Very Talented and he is a true musician
I was lucky enough to have witnessed Richie Havens live in concert,,,it was truly an out of body experience, incredible doesn't do him Justice, rest in peace,
For such a great song, it's surprising only Richie Havens does it with heart felt soul (that I've been able to find on you tube). Everybody else tries to do it with a "flair" instead of true feeling. I searched for almost 2 hours; lots of beautiful voices but commercialized, even back to the '30s.
Richie is so amazing that way. When I hear him perform something like this, or his cover of "Here Comes the Sun", so often I start out thinking, "This version sounds kind of rough." And by the end I'm practically in tears from the pure emotion of it.
So beautiful and heartfelt from Ritchie with some Freedom thrown in too. Prince too brought me here. Prince's version brought me to tears. So powerful both of them.
Met him once a long long time ago when we were traveling in the same small airport out of Connecticut. I thanked him for his music and insisted that he let me carry his guitar for him onto the rental bus lol. He was warm and humble and gracious, He probably thought I was crazy but we parted all smiles.
So much soul and pain in those words. We are so quick to forget, they try to wipe the word slave from the modern mind. Built upon inequity blood and tears, we reap what we sow.
This is an amazing and under appreciated performance from Woodstock. I love it and wish I was there. Richie Havens is barely remembered, but he is indelibly marked on my memory!
Came across this song on the end of the TV show Crisis last night. Remembered it from Woodstock. Such a powerful and meaningful song I will never forget! Clap your hands! Thanks for posting.
Amo a este honbre con una alma libre siempre viviras en mi corazon oir tu musica es algo reconfortante u te saca de la tristeza y soledad. I saw Richie a bunch of times in the 80s. No, I would'nt have been a teenager yet in the swamp, BUT! Indoors (DC,eg) or the Bandshell in Boulder, Co, eg- he's been doing it all well. I don't know what happened to the Paul Williams who used to be sitting down & ripping out those leads: notes 'n chords like throwing lightning bolts to the crowds- but again, what a great organic sound! & sincerely done covers all day long but you wouldn't know it.

You are handsome like a young Richie havens. This world may have been turned into a crap shoot by Satan. But oh what blessings the Father has shown and given us, Richie is smooth and kind like a black Jesus. No offense. Wish we could just be ourselves and be like Jesus was when He walked this earth and it wouldn't offend anyone. Be blessed brother.
What an amazing & talented man. I saw him perform at the Royal Albert Hall and last on a small stage at Amoeba Records in 2004 - INCREDIBLE! I feel so sad at his loss.
'Freedom', loved it first listening on Reel to Reel as a child. My Father's music from Air Combat Command Vietnam, '69-73. SAC-TAC 'Peace Is Our Profession'
Sorry this isn’t the video. Such a powerhouse performance. An unplanned one, it was an added to give more time for the next act to get ready. One of my favorite performances of all time. Listen to that right hand. An amazing percussive style all his own.

None of the covers are as good as this, not that I've found anyhow and I've seen and heard a whole lot of 'em, some were decent but this just satisfies deeply in a way no covers I'm aware of do. And who, at some point in their life, has not felt like a motherless child, a leaf at the mercy of the wind, a rudderless riverboat lost at sea, a feather in a hurricane?!? The trick is not to cling, just let go like leaves of fall.
Rest in power and peace 🙏

One of the most powerful songs ever performed. God, was his vocals pure and his words so moving.
Man, that guitar, the voice, the drums. It's amazing.
He stole the Song without telling where he got it from. Complete No Go.

There are many great versions of this song, but this remains my favorite. The power that comes out of his being when he sings - wow!
Spent like 30 minutes going through versions of this song and finally found the version that had been stuck in my head all day!

By any chance do you know R Havens song about Dien Bien Phu? I'm searching if you can help
Didnt you hear Prince did Motherless child ??
@@coolmanjack1995me too lol smh this version is so rustic and you can feel it def. The best version!
You cannot plan for something like this, or ever hope to duplicate it. Beautiful.
In the late sixties I saw Richie Havens and a high School auditorium and Northampton Mass. Those were the days
Даже В России ценят эту песнью, не такие мы уж и далёкие, все мы братья, все мы любим, плачем, радуемся и смеёмся 🇷🇺🇺🇸🇪🇺🇬🇧🇯🇵🇰🇷

This rendition changed my life: "Freedom" combined with "Motherless Child". I like it!

Killin' that guitar! His voice is so "haunting" in this.
Powerful always gives me goose bumps every time I hear this genius.

Prince did this live, incredible performance and quickly mentions Ritchie while performing it.
I can't listen to this only once on a sitting, 4-5 times min.
I hadn't heard this is SO long. His performance at Woodstock was simply mesmerizing.

This song opened Woodstock, some of the greatest festival music ever. You could ask if it went downhill after this ;-)
Also impromptu, he did this on the spot, no rehearsals, just hey Richie, opening act is late, would you open?????
And the funnybeautifulmagic thing is, it didn't go downhill from there.

Such soulfulness… maybe his best work done impromptu when they need to keep him on stage to fill time
He was one of my favorite acts at woodstock. You should listen to van morrison sing this. I think you would love it.
